Celebrating the DOM's Hispanic Heritage Month Continues We continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the month-long celebration from September 15 through October 15, which recognizes the legacies and contributions of individuals who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean. These dates were selected to incorporate the independence days of Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. In honor of the amazing Latinx community here in the DOM, we are resharing these fantastic profiles of Valeria Cantos Lucio, Kellie Clearo, Annelys Roque Gardner, and Paulina Rebolledo from our SOM Latinx Affinity Group. Hispanic Heritage Month is also an opportunity for us to highlight and celebrate our “Latinidad”. "Latinidad" is a term used to refer to the cultural, historical, and social identity associated with Latin American people. It encompasses a shared sense of heritage among those from Latin American countries and those of Latin American descent, including aspects like language, traditions, and values. The concept of Latinidad is complex and multifaceted, as it brings together a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds. This collective identity often intersects with other identities, such as race, ethnicity, and nationality, creating a rich and varied cultural landscape. Dr. Castrillon receives the Diversity in Lupus Research Award On Tuesday, September 17, the Lupus Research Alliance announced the recipients of the 2024 Career Development and Postdoctoral Awards to Promote Diversity in Lupus Research. Launched in 2021, the Diversity in Lupus Research (DLR) Awards aim to foster the development and productivity of exceptional early-career and postdoctoral scientists from underrepresented minority groups in science. This year, three individuals, including the DOM's Carlos Castrillon, PhD, were awarded the DLR Career Development Award, which provides each investigator up to $600,000 over four years to help establish a competitive research program. With this funding, Dr. Castrillon aims to understand how signaling inhibitors, which prevent B cells from unnecessary activation, are controlled in lupus and explore whether restoring their effectiveness can help normalize B cell activity. B cells are immune cells that produce antibodies to identify and mark for destruction foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. B cells sense these invaders using their surface receptors, which then instruct B cells to activate. This process is kept in check by signaling inhibitors, which act like brakes to prevent B cells from overreacting. Dr. Castrillon will investigate why, in lupus, these brakes are often less effective, which leads B cells to a hyperresponsive state. To read the full release, click HERE. MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDSMark your calendar for tomorrow's Medicine Grand Rounds #MedicineGrandRounds Tuesday, September 24 | noon–1 p.m., Zoom Speaker: For more information about Medicine Grand Rounds, visit bitly.com/grandround. We apologize for last week's issues with the Medicine Grand Rounds Outlook calendar invitations We sincerely apologize for the numerous erroneous Medicine Grand Rounds Outlook invitations last Tuesday. Following a lengthy investigation, Emory IT diagnosed the issue as a corrupted file in the Outlook invitation for the Medicine Grand Rounds series. This corrupted invite resulted in multiple incorrect invitations with incorrect times. To clarify: DOM Grand Rounds has not changed from its current noon to 1 p.m. time slot every Tuesday during the academic year. To remedy this issue, we canceled the corrupted event series which should have removed it from your calendars. Last Thursday, you should have received the new recurring invitation to the Medicine Grand Rounds series. Again, we are sorry for the confusion this issue has caused our DOM faculty, staff, and trainees.
