![]() ![]() The Grade 8 Boys' Basketball Team are in the playoffs. Go Gryphons! ![]() Dear Brookes Westshore Families and Friends, As term 1 draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful growth we have seen across our school. From settling into new routines to engaging with the IB Learner Profile, our students have shown resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to personal and academic success. Next week, Term 1 Learning Update will be issued on ManageBac on December 6th, offering an opportunity to celebrate achievements and identify areas for continued growth. For students in grades 4-9, the Provincial Proficiency Scale (Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending) and teacher comments will be included in the term 1 learning update. Our MYP students (grades 6-10) will also receive IB criteria grades (1-8). For students in grades 10-12, BC letter grades and percentages will still be used to ensure successful transition to post-secondary. With December just around the corner, the holiday season brings a spirit of togetherness and gratitude. Let’s continue to support and encourage one another as we navigate the remainder of this calendar year. See the poster above for more details so you can start planning. ![]() ![]() ![]() Diploma Programme Biology In this week's lab, DP 1 Biology students determined the chemical composition of various mystery "Pepsi" solutions by testing for reducing sugars and starch content. Using Benedict's reagent, students determined the presence of reducing sugars by observing the colour change that occurs during heating. A colour change from blue to yellow/orange indicates the presence of reducing sugars like glucose or maltose. In addition, iodine was used to test for the presence of starch. A blue-black colour change confirms the presence of starch in solution. The aim of the experiment is to understand the biochemical properties of different carbohydrates and to identify which sugars are present in the mystery "Pepsi" samples by comparing to known solutions and their reactions with both indicators. This hands-on investigation provides students with practical experience in performing qualitative tests for common biomolecules, helping to build their understanding of carbohydrates and their role in living organisms. ![]() ![]() ![]() Diploma Programme Chemistry DP 1 Chemistry students are learning the VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) model this week. They used molecular kits to help them visualize the structures of different covalent compounds. ![]() ![]() ![]() Winter Concert on Thursday, December 5th - 6.30 pm to 8 pm We are all excited for this year's concert!
