Undergraduate Student – 2023 DOM Research Day – Best Oral Presentation (Clinical/Health Services Research) What is your professional background?
I’m a fourth-year undergraduate on the pre-med track at Emory College. This May, I’ll be graduating with a B.A. in Human Health with an Epidemiology focus. In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Infectious Diseases under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Collins. Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
For my honors thesis, I am working on a project that focuses on better understanding humoral immunity to Zika virus (ZIKV) and advancing ZIKV vaccine development. Disease caused by ZIKV infection can lead to adverse fetal outcomes like congenital anomalies, developmental delays, and pregnancy loss; however, there are currently no approved vaccines to protect the millions of vulnerable women and children at risk. There are also complex immune interactions between related flaviviruses like Dengue to consider in designing a safe and effective ZIKV vaccine. My project looks at the epitope-specific immunogenicity of two novel ZIKV vaccines by a suite of blockade-of-binding assays established in our lab. Our work could help determine patterns of immunity of ZIKV vaccine candidates compared to natural infection and accelerate vaccine development by prioritizing candidates most likely to elicit
robust and durable immunity. What do you like most about Emory?
As a student, there are always resources available for me to access. The professors and faculty also readily offer mentorship, advice, and encouragement. What is your favorite movie or TV show?
"Silicon Valley" is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to dance and am on a competitive dance team at Emory called Karma Bhangra. I also like rock climbing. What is a fun fact about you?
I’ve met Lin Manuel Miranda!
"What's Up" is brought to you by Emory University's Department of Medicine Office of Research.
