April 2024This month sees the 2024 edition of Cryptic's Artist Residency Programme, a wonderful annual programme bringing artists this year from across the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and Ukraine. The participating artists are: Andrey
Chuginov, Alba Garcia Corral, Harry Gorski-Brown, Sonia Killman, Laura Manelli,
No Plexus, Georgina Penstkart, Kseniia Shcherbakova, SHHE (Su Shaw), Alex Smoke, and Zwel Mun Wint. Our programme of Independently Funded Residencies continues with artist, creative researcher, and designer Maraid Mcewan, musician and Cove Park Associate James Ross, and sound artist, researcher, and teacher Iain Findlay Walsh. Two group residencies take place this month: From Arthur's Seat, welcoming 13 students from Edinburgh University's MSc in Creative Writing, and the return for a second time of Looking for a Likeness Within an Unlikeness, a group residency led by artists Fraser Taylor and Lisa Woolley. We would like to congratulate everyone nominated for this year's Turner Prize, and especially Pio Abad and Jasleen Kaur, both Cove Park residents in 2007 and 2015 respectively. We are very pleased to share several new programme announcements. Read on for news of the Bridge Awards Residencies, the Taiwanese Writer Residency, and the Varuna Residency for a writer based in Scotland in 2025, plus the announcement of Magnetic 3 and the call for applications to take part in the third edition of this Franco-UK residency exchange programme for visual artists.

Magnetic 3
Open Call for Applications - Save the DateCove Park is thrilled to be confirmed as the Scottish partner in the third edition of Magnetic Residencies, a joint Franco-UK initiative under the umbrella of Fluxus Art Projects, bringing together ten institutions in France and the UK to create a network of artists residencies. The call for applications for the third round of these visual arts residencies in France and in the UK will be open from 21 May to 15 July 2024 (midnight). Further information is available here. This announcement comes as we prepare to welcome Laure Vigna back to Cove Park for the second part of her Magnetic 2 residency. The artists welcomed to Scotland through the first edition of this programme in 2022 and 2023 were David Douard and Carla Adra. We are delighted to be working in tandem with Villa Arson, Nice, on these awards and this means Cove Park will host an artist based in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France, and Villa Arson will host the artist from Scotland. Bridge Awards Residencies 2024The Bridge Awards Residency was launched in 2023. In its first year this residency, which was designed specifically for an artist based in Scotland recovering from breast cancer, was awarded to the Fife-based artist Susanne Nørregård Nielsen. Building upon the success of this first residency, we are delighted to launch a one-week group residency in May this year.
Following an open call for applications, we are pleased to announce that the participating artists include: film producer and writer Ros Borland, creative arts practitioner Abbey Craig, writer Moira McPartlin, and artist and designer Krissy Stewart. This residency was developed with support from Maggie's and we are delighted to welcome Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Maggie's Lead Psychologist Lesley Howells to Cove Park during the residency. We will also be joined during the week by Scottish Ensemble, the
pioneering group of musicians who perform classical music and modern commissions for strings across Scotland and beyond. The group will bring a mindfulness workshop to Cove Park, focusing on new ways of listening to live music and exploring how music can have an impact on health and wellbeing. We are grateful to The Bridge Awards, Maggie's, and Scottish Ensemble for their support. previously announced commissioned writers, Gaelic writer Mairi Macleod and Sámi poet Hanna Guttorm. All of the commissioned texts including English translations will be available to read on NAARCA's website in May. Co-led by Cove Park and Saari Residence, NAARCA – the Nordic Alliance of Artists' Residencies on Climate Action – is a three-year project
that brings together artists' residencies from seven countries to collaborate on research, commissions, institutional change and education around climate action. Images: above, Zeshan Shakar (photography by Erika Hebbert); below, Emmy Laura Pérez Fjallandff (photography by Ana Santl).

Cove Park/Varuna Exchange Residency
2025 Award AnnouncementFollowing a call for applications from writers and former residents of Cove Park, the 2025 residency at Varuna - The National Writers' House of Australia has been awarded to the Glasgow-based poet and interdisciplinary artist Sean Wai Keung. Sean will travel to Australia in the autumn of 2025 for a month-long residency and the opportunity to take part in the Blue Mountain's Writers' Festival. We are delighted to share this news, and know the residency will be a wonderful experience. Cove Park will welcome the writer, and former Varuna resident, Brooke Robinson in the summer this year. Brooke will take part in the Wigtown Book Festival during her time in Scotland, and we are pleased to be working with this wonderful festival for the first time. This exchange programme was launched in 2019 to create new international opportunities for writers connected to both organisations. To date, and with support from The Bridge Awards, we have organised three one-month residencies in Australia awarded to the writers and former Cove Park residents Jan Carson, Victoria Mackenzie, and Nicola White, and three one-month residencies in Scotland for former Varuna residents Roanna Gonsalves, Leah Kaminsky, and Jeanine Leane. We are grateful to The Bridge Awards for their ongoing support of this residency. Image: Sean Wai Keung, courtesy of the artist.
Space Hire 2024Space Hire was launched in 2023 to welcome other arts organisations, companies, and community groups to Cove Park for meetings and away days. In the programme's first year we were pleased to host The Common Guild, Comhairle nan Leabhraichean / The Gaelic Books Council, Glasgow International, The Mount Stuart Trust, Scottish Opera, and the University of Glasgow (Contemporary Art & Curation). In 2024 we will continue to offer beautiful spaces with outstanding views at very competitive rates throughout the year. Please contact Nicola Jamieson directly for more information and to discuss your specific requirements. Mount Stuart Trust had a brilliant Away Day at Cove Park. We had a dedicated meeting room, fabulous views, and everything we needed: screen, refreshments, and lunch. I can honestly say that it was one of our most productive strategy meetings. So important to get away, and I can't think of a better space.
