Academic Integrity Community of Practice

The first Coventry University Group Academic Integrity Community of Practice was held on the 12th June 2023. Organised by the Academic Integrity Steering Group and led by Irene Glendinning, Academic Integrity Lead, the event offered an opportunity for colleagues to get together, share good practice, and find out more about changes to how we operate.

The programme included a series of short presentations around support for students, assessment design, guidance about the use of artificial intelligence tools and updates to Turnitin.  Time was afforded for conversations between colleagues and input into future developments encouraged via the event padlet and evaluation form. Over 50 colleagues attended in person with a further 22 joining on-line from campuses in Scarborough, London, and Wroclaw.

Within feedback, colleagues attending cited the structure of the event and informative content of all presentations as most helpful.  Suggestions were offered around including group discussions within further events to explore ideas shared within the presentations.

Action Planning:

School of Economics Finance and Accounting

Colleagues from across Economics, Finance and Accounting came together on the 6th of June for a day of action planning. Designed and lead by Erika Hawkes with support from Tamar MacLellan and introduced by Richard Pennington, the day enabled Course Directors, Student Success Coaches, Talent Team and Registry colleagues to meet, discuss, and plan for the upcoming year.

Erika and Tamar used hands-on visual mapping techniques to enable colleagues to explore themes around student attendance, engagement, and retention leading to a deeper understanding of the rhythms of the year.  Colleagues then pinpointed specific actions and services that needed attention to support students to attend and re-engage with their studies.

Other themes explored included helping students to get the most out of project modules, communication with enrolling students, and suggestions for further student engagement with Talent Team colleagues. The day ended with a visiting presentation from Irene Glendenning on emerging guidance around students’ use of AI. The session resulted in a set of action points and next steps, which will ensure that EFA is well placed to support students to achieve and thrive in the new academic year.

Sharing best practice:

Deconstructing Assessment Rubrics

Brinder Rajpal and Alice Lau, Academic Developers, shared their innovative practice of using GoogleDocs to co-create and deconstruct assessment rubric in partnership with students to develop assessment literacy at the Technology Enhanced Active Learning 2023 conference hosted by University of Warwick on the 20th June. They delivered a practical session sharing how colleagues could readily adapt such an approach in their own teaching practice.

The session generated discussion around the use of rubrics, and colleagues were enthusiastic in exploring this in their own disciplines.

If you would like to find out more about this, please do get in touch with Brinder Rajpal who will be able to share more insights.

Good luck to Alice Lau

Alice Lau, course director for the PGCert Academic Practice in Higher Education (PGCAPHE) will be leaving the University to take on a new post – Head of CPD and accredited programmes at Aston University from August. Alice joined the University in 2017, leading the PGCAPHE. She has led the course through reviews and Advance HE accreditations, including he move from a largely face to face delivery to a blended and online delivery. Alice's work in the team has had a great positive impact to both colleagues and students and we are thankful for her support and guidance over the last 6 years. We wish Alice all the best to her new role.
