Fours medal moment!Congratulations to Selina Goddard, Nicole Toomey, Tayla Bruce and Val Smith who won bronze in Birmingham defeating, Fiji 17-16. It was a terrific achievement, ladies. The Blackjacks and ParaJacks have been giving it their very best on the greens at Royal Leamington Spa. The Kiwis have come up against some of the world's best bowlers making it a great competition and the matches exciting to watch. The latest results: Shannon McIlroy in the Men's Singles defeats Chris Locke from the Falkland Islands, 21-5. However his loss against Scotland's Iain McLean, 4-21 means he doesn't advance. It's great news for the Women's Triples. They won their quarter-final match over Australia, 15-10. We wish the Men's Fours and Women's Triples all the best for their next matches - kia kaha (be strong) - we are right behind you. Tony is competing as a veteran in the Men's Individual Epee. Commonwealth Fencing Championships are held every four years, in the same year as the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Veteran Championships consist of Individual and Team events for three weapons: foil, sabre and epee. There are similarities between both sports.
"I have been fencing for a relatively short time, about two years since joining Tuatahi Fencing in Glen Eden. While I don't have a favourite sport, over the last six months playing bowls has dropped off a bit due to some intensive fencing training for the Commonwealth Games. However, this did not stop me from getting the trophy for the most improved player at bowls at this year's prize giving." "I have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement from the bowling community especially from the members of Henderson Bowls.” Wishing you the best of luck, Tony. I'm going to break my arm off...Olivia Buckingham's sense of humour is shining through in Birmingham, just as it did at the Australian Open. Here's what Bowls International posted on their Facebook page recently... We think it's fair to say there is a difference in the speed of greens in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres! Of course, comments have been flowing about the speed and condition of greens! In the Plate event, Mike Bradshaw beat Tony Maru by one point. In third place was Kevin Judson. If Tony had used his Joker, Tony would have won. In the main event final, Kevin Beasley was playing beautiful draw bowls to beat Garry Cotter and David Eades. He eventually beat Garry Cotter into second place by five points. David played his role in upsetting the heads so, it was a great final. Kevin now travels to Wellington to contest the national final with a chance to win a trip to the Gold Coast.
