CEDRR Hosts Bring Back the Trades Event
The Bring Back the Trades Skills Expo, presented by F.W. Webb, is gearing up to be one of the most impactful trade-focused events in Vermont! With about 2,000 students from nearly 40 schools and hundreds of community members already pre-registered to attend, and 68 businesses in the trade, this event is set to provide hands-on experiences and career exploration opportunities for students, parents, and community members alike. Brought to you by Title Sponsor F.W. Webb and in collaboration with the Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region (CEDRR) the event is hosted by Vermont State University Castleton Campus. The Skills Expo will take place on May 20, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, offering a unique opportunity for students to explore high-demand, high-paying careers in the skilled trades. Why This Event Matters With the “silver tsunami” of retirements looming, where five tradespeople retire for every two entering the workforce, the
skills gap in the trades is more pressing than ever. The Bring Back the Trades Skills Expo provides a solution by exposing students to real career opportunities in fields such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical work, construction, welding, cosmetology, culinary and more—all through hands-on experiences and direct engagement with industry professionals. Event Highlights Interactive Exhibits: Experience hands-on trade demonstrations from businesses eager to showcase their work and technologies. “It’s like touch-a-truck for teens and grown ups - there are so many amazing exhibits happening at the Vermont event - I can’t wait for the students, parents, and community members to see the creativity,” said Bring Back the Trades Executive
Director Shana Brunye. Equipment & Tool Demos: See trade professionals in action, high tech industry tools, and learn about cutting-edge innovations. Industry Engagement: Network with professionals and potential employers looking to invest in the next generation of skilled workers. Scholarships & Giveaways: Businesses are stepping up to provide scholarship opportunities, prizes, and giveaways to students pursuing careers in the trades. Announcing the Vermont Capital Guide
An inherent challenge for expanding employee ownership is access to capital. If a company wants to maintain its status as employee-owned, its avenues for taking investment are limited in key ways compared to “investor owned” firms. Fortunately, a number of developments have considerably improved the capital environment to make EO more accessible. For worker co-ops, the Cooperative Fund of the Northeast’s maximum loan size has grown five-fold, making the model a possibility for companies of a whole new scale. In the ESOP space, SBA loan guarantees are finally becoming
accessible, and we’ve recently seen several local financial institutions close on their first deals. And more exciting developments are on the horizon, like the proposed Employee Equity Investment Act. While this growth of institutional support is exciting, capital gaps that require creativity to bridge are still commonplace, particularly in transactions that transition companies to employee ownership. It’s often possible for individuals and communities to make up the difference, but navigating how to make that work without running afoul of securities laws can be an intimidating prospect for people raising investment money for the
first time. So, as a tool intended to make the process more accessible, we are pleased to announce the release of the Vermont Capital Guide! Read More →
Elevate Vermont Matching Grants Available to Tech Businesses

commercialization of the research. To qualify, businesses must be: - For-profit entities with their principal place of business in Vermont

- Actively pursuing Phase II funding (for Phase I recipients), or commercialization (for Phase II recipients)

StartUp Rutland Business Participant Transforms Waste
When it comes to environmental awareness and sustenance, some companies are making great strides toward recycling waste, but one company has discovered the use of our own human waste for sustainability. “Pee-cycling” is taking efficiency to a new level, converting human waste into liquid fertilizer for “beneficial reuse.” Brightwater Tools is a company that is introducing technology that company officials say will transform the way we feel about our own waste. Brightwater Tools really took off when the company joined the StartUp Rutland program, where mentor and Director of Venture Capital for StartUp Rutland Mose Cassaro helped promote their business. “I met them as a mentor through the LaunchVT program,” Cassaro said. Cassaro chose Brightwater Tools as one of the startups he wanted to work with, as there were other companies also working to promote their businesses. Read the full article here →
