Road work speed limitsInappropriate road work speed limits diminish the credibility of work sites leading to increased rates of non-compliance.

How we are going to do it?
AITSDA trial of IGS illuminated bollardsWhat is AITSDA?Austroads Innovative Temporary Traffic Management Device and Solution Assessment (AITDSA) Scheme assesses and recommends innovative temporary traffic management devices and solutions for use in Australia and New Zealand. Transport for NSW is represented on the AITDSA panel and supports the scheme by facilitating field trials of new innovations at our projects. This relatively new scheme commenced in July 2022 and has already recommended four new devices for use. There are also several new innovations being assessed, including the IGS illuminated bollard. What is IGS illuminated bollard? The IGS (Illuminated Guidance System) illuminated bollard:
Key principle for road use: the illuminated bollard must provide the same performance as a standard T-Top (AS1742.3 compliant) bollard, when it is not illuminated. Field trialsThe first trial of the IGS illuminated bollard has been conducted on the Newell Highway at the Pilliga Rest Area overtaking lane project, which is one of the Newell Highway Program Alliance (NHPA) projects. The NHPA project team have assessed IGS illuminated bollard in various traffic management configurations and device spacings and provided the AITDSA assessment team with valuable feedback and support with the trial. Further trials are now being established to test the bollards in urban areas and on multi-lane roads. Potential applications for the IGS bollardThe IGS illuminated bollard provides increased guidance to driver particularly before headlight beams reach the bollard, when lights are on low beam or in increment weather. Although they could be applied in many situations, they would provide the most benefits in those locations where there are higher risks, and where additional guidance would be beneficial (i.e., merge taper, lateral shift, temporary traffic switch or side road). Portable traffic control devices (PTCDs) were introduced to reduce risk for traffic controllers by allowing them to control traffic from a safer distance.
By being further away from the moving traffic, the ever-present risk of being struck by an out-of-control vehicle is eliminated or significantly reduced! Traffic controller where they could be struck by an out-of-control vehicle Traffic controller operating PTCD at a safer location and ready to move away further Traffic controllers must be positioned:
Where practical to do so, the traffic controller should also be positioned so that they can view the traffic signal lantern display as this reduces the risk of incorrect operation. When implementing the traffic guidance scheme (TGS) and during the shift, the team leader and the traffic controller must:
