Connecting with the 16th Assembly
as it happens
From the 6th - 9th May, members of the 16th Assembly will gather for the reconvened meeting on Gubbi Gubbi Country on the Sunshine Coast. The first meeting of 16th Assembly members in July last year was held online for the first time. We were able to gather and make decisions as a digital community. We are excited for the upcoming reconvened meeting to be held in person, and there are many opportunities for the wider Uniting Church to connect into the work of the meeting in real time. Read more
UnitingCare / Federal Election
With the Federal Election just around the corner this means we are entering a period of heightened opportunity. The opportunity is to make Australia better by making our laws better. UnitingCare Australia is undertaking a concerted push to change the way our system works. One of their key focuses is economic inequality because we believe in an Australia where prosperity is shared fairly, embracing all people regardless of their privilege or upbringing. This vision is based in the ministry of Jesus who announced, ‘good news to the poor’ and those excluded from society. Read more

When evil and institutionalised violence (‘structural sin’) go unrecognised at the first level, the second and third levels of violence and evil are inevitable. If we don’t nip evil in the bud at the level where it is legitimated and disguised, we will have little power to fight it at the individual level. When we refer to ‘world’ we don’t mean creation or nature, but ‘the system’: how groups, cultures, institutions, and nations organise to protect themselves and maintain their power. This is the most hidden and denied level of evil and violence. We cannot
see it because we’re all inside of it, and it is in our ego’s self-interest to protect this corporate deception. Read more
This week we pray for: - For all in the Uniting Church as members gather for the 16th Assembly
- For the binding relationship between the Uniting Church and the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress as we prepare to renew the Covenant at the 16th Assembly reconvened meeting
- For the people of the Pacific, our church partners in the region and Pasifika communities in the Uniting Church. We give thanks for their deep faith, theological insights and their prophetic voice for peace and creation.
