Family & Preventive Medicine

May 2021

Just 55 Words:

Ted Johnson, MD, MPH

With graduation nigh for learners, where will their next steps lead? What lessons from this year will they bring with them? Meticulous hand hygiene. Online meetings. Compassion for self and others. Awareness and advocacy to fight health inequities and racial injustice. A yearning for some semblance of normal and the will to make it happen.

 PA Program Walks Together

The PA students did a "Walk Together" on April 21 to express their feelings and thoughts about the current climate of mass shootings and the Chauvin trial.

As background, initial plans were for a "Walk Out," but people quickly recognized that the goal was to unite and strengthen each other and not divide students and faculty and changed the name. The feedback was very positive. It was an uplifting and uniting experience.

Freshen up your meals and support the community with local produce. Emory’s CSA (community supported agriculture) box offers several pick up locations around campus. Alternatively, check out your local farmer's market! Several farmer's markets, like Tucker and Lilburn have online ordering and safe pickup options. Others, like Dunwoody, have in-person markets with mask requirements and other precautions being followed.

Emory’s Organic farm CSA signup (summer is sold out, but sign up for fall or spring!).

Tucker Farmer's Market: an easy online ordering system with pick-up or delivery options.

Lilburn Farmer's Market: online ordering, several pick-up options, or in-person.

Dunwoody Farmer's Market: in-person, vendors masked, no-touch shopping.

Transformative Research

Research News

Every month, we highlight faculty research, so you can stay up to date on your colleagues and their current projects.

May Featured Researcher:

Miranda Moore, PhD

Assistant Professor, Division of Family Medicine

What is your professional background?

I graduated from UGA’s Terry College of Business with a BA in Economics. I went to Stony Brook University for my MA and PhD in Economics with specialization in the fields of Health, Labor-Demographics, and Game Theory. I worked for the US Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration, conducting research to inform the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, from 2007-2012. I worked for the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care in the American Academy of Family Physicians, researching primary care topics, from 2012-2016. I joined Emory as faculty September 2016.

In what division do you work and who is your mentor?

I work in the Family Medicine Division and I have a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine, working with the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and Gerontology. My mentors are Dr. Ted Johnson, Dr. Sharon Bergquist, and Dr. Dean Seehusen at MCG.

Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?

My research focuses on primary care delivery and workforce. Some of my recent group projects have shown the level of burnout of the US nursing workforce, the impact of racial redlining and lending bias on breast cancer mortality, and patients' perceptions on decision aids addressing out-of-pocket medication costs. I believe my work is helping inform stakeholders on practices that will help to achieve the quadruple aim of healthcare: improved patient experience, lower costs, higher quality, and improved clinician experience.

What do you like most about Emory?

I love the collaborations I have with my Emory colleagues. I am a member of several supportive researching and teaching groups!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to read (nonfiction mostly), garden, and spend time with my family (husband, 6 year old and 3 year old, and dog). Also, my 6 year old has recently recruited me to play Minecraft!

What is a fun fact about you?

At UGA I worked as a parking attendant/security guard.

Educational Investments for our future

Meet the new Family Medicine
Chief Residents

Name: Bernadette “Berny” Baker

Hometown: Houston, Texas

What are you most excited about for Chief Year?

I look forward to serving my co-residents and working with program leadership for the ongoing improvement of the program.

Why did you choose to train at Emory?

I would like to pursue a career in academic medicine and I know that my training at Emory will help me reach this goal. Emory has several unique opportunities for research, education, and career development.

What’s been your favorite residency experience?

I have really enjoyed my inpatient rotations, particularly our Family Medicine Service. FMS is one of the few opportunities that I get to work with my co-residents on a one-to-one basis.

What is your favorite thing about our program?

I think one of the best things about Emory Family Medicine is the faculty. I feel comfortable approaching any faculty member with any questions or concerns I have about just about anything. It is a very supportive community.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I’m a huge theme park fan and I have been to Disney parks around ten different times.

 ******

Name: David Neuberger

Hometown: Washington DC

What are you most excited about for Chief Year? Getting to know all the candidates interested in joining our program. We always have such a diverse set of applicants from all different backgrounds, and I can’t wait to meet all the new future doctors. I always hear interesting stories about people’s lives, special talents, and experiences when we

talk about our interviewees and I look forward to being on the front line of the interview process.

Why did you choose to train at Emory? I chose to train here because of all the amazing opportunities our program offers. Not only have I gotten well-rounded, full-scope family medicine training, but I have also had many chances to pursue my personal interests with full support from faculty from our program and other programs within Emory School of Medicine. I also chose to come here because the faculty and residency leadership are incredibly supportive and are always willing to lend a helping hand. I felt like I would be welcome here and it did not disappoint.

What’s been your favorite residency experience? My favorite residency experience was the intern welcome party. About a month into our training, we had a huge party at the top of Ponce City Market, and we ate, drank, and played games with other residents, residency faculty, staff, and everyone’s family. It was the first time I truly felt like a part of the group and I knew it was going to be a fun three years.

What is your favorite thing about our program? I love the comradery. In Family Medicine, you are always on different rotations and you are sometimes away from your co-residents, but we always find ways to see each other, catch up and socialize. Working together in the hospital is always a fun time and even passing each other in the hallways can make your day.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I was once on SportsCenter top 10 when I was in college. I was selected from the crowd for a halftime half-court shot to win prizes and I made it. Also featured that day on SportsCenter Top 10 were Lebron James, Blake Griffin, and Cristiano Ronaldo, so basically what I am saying is that I am a top-level athlete like those guys.

News from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council

DEI Council Spotlights:
Ms. Emily Chuba, BA

Each month, the FPM DEI Council will spotlight a different staff member of the department.  This month, the council spotlights Ms. Emily Chuba, Associate Director of Research Projects.

Ms. Chuba joined Emory in 2016 as a Senior Research Administrative Coordinator in the School of Medicine and Rollins School of Public Health. She was recently promoted to Associate Director of Research Projects. Ms. Chuba has over 12 years of experience working with government agencies, universities, and non-profit organizations in the areas of public health programming and research.

What do you like to do in your spare time, outside of work?
I love reading in my spare time. Currently, I’m reading A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn. I’m also an avid rower, enjoy listening to podcasts (NPR Planet Money, Freakonomics, and Pod Save America are some of my favorites) and, of course, spending quality time with my French Bulldog, Dezz -- who too often likes to be the center of attention on Zoom calls.

Birthdate
I am a true Aries.♈️ I just celebrated my second pandemic birthday on April 5th. I’m looking forward to a COVID-free birthday next year which will be a milestone birthday for me – the big 4-0! I plan to celebrate with Botox injections and a few weeks in Paris. 😊

Home town (please tell us a few interesting items about your birthplace)
I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. We are most known for our snowstorms. We can have 8ft of snow on the ground and life goes on as usual. But also my hometown smells like Cheerios – the General Mills plant is in downtown Buffalo. I have fond memories of summer evenings spent watching the Buffalo Bison baseball games with my dad and the smell of Cheerios in the air.

A fun fact about yourself! I have white water rafted the Nile River.

Health Equity Day - Storytelling Pre-Event
MONDAY, MAY 10, 6 – 8 PM

Through narrative medicine and storytelling, physicians can build reflective practices that enhance their professionalism and collegial relationships, and reveal greater meaning to their clinical practice. In medicine, such an act allows for the unpacking of narrative interactions between caregivers and their patients, caregivers and their reflective selves, caregivers and their professional peers, and caregivers and society at large.

As a supplement to Health Equity Day 2021, we invite you to join us Monday, May 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. for a virtual Storytelling Pre-Event featuring compelling accounts centered on health equity from a distinguished lineup of storytellers. We will absorb, interpret, and act on the stories shared in this space. Register HERE.

Family Medicine Residency rolls up their sleeves for trees

Family Medicine residents Drs. Cassandra Mooney, Rozina Merchant, and Ify Nzenwa and faculty members Drs. Megha Shah, Ryan Smith, James Jo, and Neena Ghose spent a sunny Saturday volunteering with Trees Atlanta in East Atlanta. Together, they cared for 150 trees, had a lot of fun, and, according to Ify's watch, burnt 600 calories each! They also learned that Dr. Smith is not afraid of snakes. Nice work, y'all!
