Update on Research Security Training Implementation

This is an update of our previous announcement regarding the implementation of the University’s Research Security Training module.

A training module that meets federal research security requirements has now been fully integrated into the University of Pittsburgh’s CITI Training Portal.

Accessing the Training Module
To complete Research Security Training, please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Log in to the CITI Access Portal at https://www.citi.pitt.edu.
  2. From the “Learner Tools” menu at the bottom of the page, select “Add a Course.”
  3. From the course selection menu, choose “Research Security Training” (currently listed as the final item on the menu).
  4. The module will then be added to your list of assigned courses for completion.

Compliance Requirements
At present, the U.S. Department of Energy requires that all “covered individuals” (i.e., key personnel named on funding proposals) complete the training on an annual basis prior to proposal submission. However, consistent with the directives of National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33) and the CHIPS and Science Act, it is anticipated that other federal funding agencies will adopt similar requirements in the near future.

Tracking and Documentation
Now that the training is fully deployed within the CITI system, completion of the module will be automatically recorded and made available to relevant University compliance offices. Individuals will receive annual reminders when retraining is due. While not required, participants may also download a certificate of completion at the end of the module for their records.

Action for Early Completers
If you previously completed the interim version of the Research Security Training prior to CITI implementation, please contact the Office of Research Protections at ORP_Support@pitt.edu to request manual entry of your training completion into the system.

Thank you for your continued attention to this evolving federal requirement.
