WHEA Fellowship in Interprofessional Leadership and Professional Development

Consider nominating a colleague or yourself to participate in the WHEA Fellowship in Interprofessional Leadership and Professional Development ("formerly the Kern Faculty Fellowship") for health sciences educators and practitioners who want to transform interprofessional collaborative practice & education at Emory University. 

This longitudinal certificate program uses a small-group approach to learning. The educational method facilitates growth in teamwork, communication skills, moral development, and professional identity through guided critical reflection coupled with immersion in challenging scenarios. This proven pedagogical approach develops and sustains meaningful leadership and relational skills as a model that can be exported to other organizational and community contexts. Example session topics include the following:

  • Building and sustaining community engagement.
  • Restoring trust with patients, colleagues, and staff.
  • Character formation, professional development, and leadership.
  • Effectively addressing equity, inclusion, and structural racism in healthcare.
  • Addressing burnout and moral injury and achieving joy and balance using peer support.

Emory Quality Academy:
Interprofessional Team Skills for Quality Improvement

 

Led by course director Dr. Bhavin Adhyaru, the chief purpose of this course is to train interprofessional teams of healthcare professionals in quality improvement (QI) skills that they can apply to local settings, developing capacity for continuous improvement, interprofessional teamwork, and teaching QI as part of their work.

This is a longitudinal course with 6 sessions over 6 months, designed to accomplish the learning objectives through a project-based curriculum. This course includes workshops led by expert faculty,  projects supported by leadership and coaches from our academic health system partners, and presentations of project outcomes at the Emory Quality Conference.

William T. Branch Jr. Innovations in Primary Care Lecture, featuring Tonia Poteat, PhD, MPH, PA-C. "The Hidden Cost of Social Inequities: Addressing the Toll of Transphobia on Health." Register at bit.ly/BranchLecture2024

Emory PA Program alum Dr. Tonia Poteat is a Professor in the Duke University School of Nursing, Co-Director of the Duke Sexual and Gender Minority Wellness Program, and Associate Director of the Duke Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Developmental Core. Her research, teaching, and clinical practice focus on LGBTQ health and HIV with particular attention to the health of transgender and gender-diverse communities. She directs the RISE Lab where her community-engaged research attends to the role of intersectional structural stigma in driving health inequities and seeks to identify strategies to advance health justice. Certified as a Gender Specialist by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine, she is a leader in research and care with transgender persons.

As a certified PA, she has 30 years of experience providing medical care for transgender adults and people living with HIV. She currently cares for adults living with HIV at the UNC Infectious Diseases Clinic and mentors medical students in the SHAC Gender Affirming Care Clinic. She is an associate editor for the journal LGBT Health and has served on consensus panels for the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine including Sex and Gender Identification and Implications for Disability Evaluation and Understanding the Status and Well-Being of Sexual and Gender Diverse Populations. She is deeply committed to community-engaged research with actionable findings.

DOM Research Day 2024

Registration is open for the Department of Medicine's 2024 Research Day. This year's keynote address will be given by Sandra L. Wong, MD, MS, Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer for Emory Healthcare.

The program includes five featured research talks from DOM faculty, twelve oral presentations from the highest-scored abstracts, and two poster sessions. At the end of the day, awards are given to recognize the most outstanding presentations. Learn more.

Best wishes to Dr. Clyde Partin!

 

Clyde Partin, Jr. MD (pictured above, center with l-to-r Dr. David Roberts, Dr. William Eley, Dr. Carlos del Rio, and Dr. Ted Johnson) is retiring after an extraordinary 32-year career on the Emory faculty. Dr. Partin was hired by Dr. Paul Seavey and later was instrumental in the creation of the Seavey Comprehensive Clinic. He also founded Emory’s Special Diagnostic Clinic. Dr. David Roberts, Director of the Seavey Clinic, describes Partin as “the heart and soul of the Seavey Clinic – a trusted and revered doctor who is loved and looked up to by his colleagues, patients, staff, and students. He’s one of the most highly sought after and respected clinicians in the Southeast.”

During his years on faculty, Dr. Partin brought his lifelong interests in history and literature to the curriculum as co-director and teacher for the Medicine and Literature elective (2014-present) and as co-founder, coordinator, and moderator of the J. Willis Hurst Annual Symposium for the History of Medicine (2004-present). Read more about Dr. Partin's career, including a first-person reflection.

 

Manning to present 2024 Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Lecture 

Dr. Kimberly Manning's lecture, titled "Wisdom at the Bedside," will offer a narrative journey of lessons gained through listening and reflecting. The annual lecture is jointly hosted by the Gold Foundation and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) at the Learn Serve Lead Conference.

Tomolo receives VAQS Award! 
 

Dr. Anne Tomolo was the recipient of the VA Quality Scholars (VAQS) Fellowship Program’s Alumni Award. The Paul Batalden Award recognizes VAQS graduate’s outstanding accomplishments in the field of health care improvement and patient safety. Dr. Tomolo graduated from the VAQS program in 2002.

Power trio alert! Dr. Stacy Higgins (left) and Dr. Jada Bussey-Jones (right) joined Dr. Erica Brownfield (center) for this picture following a reception in her honor as she steps down as Associate Dean for Medical Education. All three began their journey together at the same new employee orientation and now serve as Deans at the Emory School of Medicine. Brownfield has been a professor of medicine since 2013 and served as associate dean since 2018, overseeing the MD curriculum and accreditation for the MD program. She has led two LCME accreditation self-studies; was an inaugural member of the Woodruff Leadership Academy; completed the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship at Drexel University; and served as medicine clerkship director, vice chair for education in the Department of Medicine, university senate president and university faculty council chair among many other leadership positions. Brownfield has practiced at Grady since 1999 and has been designated a Distinguished Physician by the Emory Department of Medicine clinical distinctions program.

Dr. Stacy Higgins has been named an Eminent Physician in the Emory School of Medicine Clinical Distinctions Program. The Clinical Distinctions designation program is an annual School of Medicine program designed to recognize faculty who have devoted a majority of their time and careers to providing excellence in clinical care.

  • MPH students can be very helpful on research projects as they bring skills they are learning in their program
  • MPH students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week as long as the work fulfills one of their MPH program competencies
  • Students are back so applications need to go in NOW for Fall semester
