DOM RYSE welcomes A'Kristionna King as
Program Coordinator - DEI/HR Initiatives
A’Kristionna (Kristi) King is a passionate and dedicated DEI professional who is committed to creating equitable spaces in which all people feel seen, valued, and celebrated for being their full, authentic selves. She received her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts Lowell where she was a Division I student-athlete on the women's lacrosse team, and her Master of Public Health from the University of Missouri.
Raised right outside of Baltimore, Maryland in a blended and multiracial/multicultural home and larger community, Kristi has always deeply valued community and the celebration of differences. As a certified diversity facilitator and trainer (CDFT), she works to stay up to date with DEI best practices and frameworks in order to provide the most culturally relevant and impactful support she can to all communities, with a particular focus on historically underrepresented or marginalized communities. It is rare to find her without a smile on her face, and in her free time, you can find her spending time with friends and family, traveling, or trying out a new restaurant! Please join us in welcoming Kristi to the Department of Medicine!
Celebrate DOM's Black History with RYSE this February
February is Black History Month! While Black History Month is recognized during the month of February, it is important to remember the history, contributions, and accomplishments of Black individuals year-round, especially those that have contributed to Emory's Department of Medicine. This year, to honor Black History Month we will be celebrating the Black History right here at Emory Department of Medicine. Follow along with RYSE as we honor and celebrate those that have contributed to Emory DOM and provide some snapshots of Black History here at the DOM. You can find weekly highlights and fun facts in the DOM newsletter as well as on our socials. Come along with us as we walk through Emory DOM's Black History!
Reminder: School of Medicine Black History Month

On Tuesday, January 16, in honor of MLK Day, the DOM welcomed Andre L. Churchwell, MD, back to Emory as a visiting professor and Medicine Grand Rounds guest speaker. Dr. Churchwell currently serves as senior advisor to the Chancellor on Inclusion and Community Outreach at Vanderbilt University and is the Levi Watkins, Jr. MD Chair and professor of Medicine, Radiology, and Radiological Sciences. He also has the special distinction of being a former chief medical resident (CMR) — specifically the first Black chief medical resident at Grady Hospital. He would then go on to train in Cardiology at Emory where he was an integral part of the inaugural DEI efforts in the School of
Medicine. Though wintry weather advisories were abounded, that didn’t stop residents, medical students, and faculty from filling the room and virtual space for his Grand Rounds presentation which centered on Hearing the Voices of Our Mentors. The day was filled with teaching, meetings with trainees and faculty, seeing old friends, and reminiscing during a tour of Grady Hospital. For those who missed his extraordinary presentation and walk through Emory’s DOM history, visit the DOM YouTube Channel HERE.
