Click here Friday 18 October Message from the Executive PrincipalKia ora koutou, good afternoon, 下午好, 안녕하세요 A warm welcome to our new Pinehurst families this term, with 10 students joining us as New Entrants. On Monday morning, there were lots of smiles and some nervous parents, but I know all of the children have quickly settled into their new environment. I enjoyed having older siblings introduce me to their younger brothers and sisters in the playground; they were proud to show off their family! As the term starts, we also welcome two new staff members to the school, both of whom are joining us full-time, and I am sure you will enjoy getting to know them in the years ahead. Miss Deborah Cole has started in Primary, looking after our Term Four New Entrants, and Mrs Alex Pennycuick has joined the English department in the College. I know they are keen to get to know their students and make a positive impact on our community. Exams have been the week's theme across the school, with Checkpoints taking place in Years 6 and 9 and IGCSE and A Level assessments taking place for our Senior students. For our younger students, these exams are an important measure of progress in the curriculum, and we will use the results to plan for their specific needs next year. For higher year groups, the exams are an important part of their school journey as they move toward higher education. Based on internal data, we expect to see another set of outstanding results. Our Korean exchange students arrived back in New Zealand on Tuesday, concluding a brilliant trip during which they were able to reconnect with their friends from IMAE Middle School. The trip was also a great chance for our students to gain a deeper appreciation of Korean culture, which was highlighted in the College assembly yesterday afternoon. The Korean and Argentinian exchanges have been very successful, and we plan to maintain these connections well into the future. On Monday afternoon, I met with the academic staff to discuss the new appraisal process starting in 2025. The theme of our appraisal is affirmation and aspiration, recognising and celebrating what we do well, while also challenging ourselves to be better in all aspects of our roles. The process will help us identify areas where we need to focus our professional learning and improve the outcomes for your children. I will also meet with our operations staff in the coming weeks to share how the changes will impact them. While the implementation of the new process will take some time, I do expect to see positive change quickly as we seek continuous improvement. Many of you will have seen photos from our Year 13 Graduation on the last day of Term Three. It was a fantastic, emotional occasion and the start of a new tradition for the school. It was clearly a special day for students and their parents and a fitting way for them to conclude their Pinehurst journey. As a reminder, you should have received a link to our annual survey earlier this week. Your feedback is valuable to our ongoing development, and I encourage you to complete the form. While this is a relatively short term, there are plenty of events happening throughout the school to keep everyone busy. The key message for all of the students is to aim high and challenge themselves in their goals; after all, one of our key values is excellence. I hope you all enjoy the weekend ahead. Best wishes, Mike Waller Dates for your DiaryMonday 21 October

Message from the Principal of PrimaryKia ora, It was lovely to see everyone back on Monday and especially to welcome ten new members of the Primary who joined our P5 New Entrant class. Although our Pōwhiri was small this term, it was a special way to welcome new students and families and our new teacher Deborah Cole. Deborah joins us originally from ACG Parnell and has recently returned from teaching in England. We are thrilled to have her as part of our teaching team, she has extensive knowledge of teaching the Cambridge curriculum and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and skills. Week 1 of the term always means Cambridge Checkpoint tests for our Year 6 students and a little bit of nervous excitement, especially at the beginning of the week. They have been amazing, and we are so proud of them for the way they have conducted themselves throughout the testing period. Today was the last day with their final maths paper and then they will be sent to the U.K. to be marked. We are confident that they were well prepared, have given their best and will get the grades they deserve to recognise their hard work. They have plenty to do and learn for the rest of the term as they prepare to transition to the College. Next week our Year 4 and Year 5 students will sit their Cambridge Progression tests which will give them the opportunity to demonstrate their learning under timed conditions and will provide useful data for their teachers as they continually refine their programmes of teaching. Most of our data comes from what we observe in class, and we recognise that some children find test taking easier than others. Our aim is to give them the confidence to sit tests and give them good advice on how to show their learning. As adults it is up to us to ensure that we don’t put too much pressure on young children in timed tests. This isn’t good for them and can have the opposite effect on their performance. There is plenty of time to learn how to get the best out of these situations. Year 3 are off to Ambury Farm today and they are so excited! They will experience a working farm and participate in spinning wool, making butter, and meeting some very lovely sheep and cows. They will also experience a foreshore walk near the shore of the Manukau Harbour. If you want a family trip there yourself in the future, it is open to the public with lots of family walks as well as gardens, the farm, and a campground. Next week Year 2 are going to Kelly Tarletons to see the marine life and learn about all the wonderful creatures in the ocean as well as Antarctica. We are lucky in Auckland to have access to such a range of interesting educational resources and facilities on our doorstep. Lucky Year 2! The weather is warming up, so I hope you have the chance to get out and about this weekend doing fun things with your children, they don’t stay little for long. Have a great weekend. Ngā mihi nui, Sian Coxon Primary NewsPrimary SpecialistsYear 5 Music with Ms Pope - Space Music In term 4 Year 5 music learners will explore music that represents space through works by Gustav Holst, Richard Strauss, and John Williams. They will engage in composing, experimenting, and improvising with both voices and musical instruments. Students will deepen their understanding of melody and rhythm construction by using their bodies and visual symbols to connect sound with symbolism. The students will enhance their knowledge of music composition and foster familiarity with space-themed compositions, appreciating how music reflects and represents the theme of space. Year 5 Chinese First Language with Ms Vien The Year 5 students will explore significant cultural places in China while acquiring vocabulary related to various topics. They will learn to listen and talk about countries and nationalities, as well as discuss the weather and time. Additionally, students will become familiar with landmarks and important historical and cultural locations. Year 5 students will integrate cultural understanding with language skills, enabling them to enhance their communication abilities in Chinese. Year 6 Spanish with Mrs Cadag In Year 6 Spanish the students will review and reinforce vocabulary related to colours, classroom items, and numbers. They will practice giving and responding to simple classroom instructions in Spanish, such as "levanta la mano" (raise your hand) and "abre el libro" (open the book). Additionally, students will review basic classroom phrases and expressions, including greetings, farewells, and polite requests. They will extend their knowledge of the verb "tener" (to have) by using it in relation to classroom items, possessions, and age. Year 4 Science with Mrs Herbert In Year 4 the students will learn that energy exists in all matter and forms such as sound, light, and heat. They will understand that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be transferred, with some energy detected as sound, light, or temperature increases. Additionally, students will learn how objects that are not light sources can be seen through reflection. Year 3 Physical Education with Mr Taylor The aim for Year 3-4 physical education in striking and fielding is to build on fundamental skills, introduce game concepts, and enhance coordination, strategy, and teamwork. Students will develop more accurate and powerful striking techniques using various equipment and learn different types of strikes for different gameplay situations. Fielding skills such as catching, throwing, and stopping will be refined, with a focus on positioning and movement. New EntrantsIt has been wonderful to see the children arrive back after the break, full of excitement for the term ahead and to see their friends and classmates again. It has been a busy first week with lots of learning taking place in our classes. This term we are welcoming Miss Cole and 10 new students to Pinehurst and P5. They are settling into their class and routines at school well. This term, P1 is excited to dive into their new Science topic on staying alive and exploring what different living things need to survive. We were especially surprised to learn that plants are living things too! We're all looking forward to our upcoming trip to Auckland Zoo and can't wait to learn even more. This week P2 students have all been very excited about their new Big Writing Adventure 'A Wolf's Tale' based on the story Little Red Riding Hood. Together they worked to create a 3D model of the forest Little Red skipped through before writing detailed setting descriptions. In P4 we have begun our new writing mission about a mysterious egg. This week, we have been exploring nests and what animals create nests. The children have had lots of fun making their own nests this week out of different materials, and writing detailed descriptions. P5 have been solving addition and subtraction problems in maths this week, to help them do this they have been learning to count objects to find and check their answers. It has been very hands on with lots of equipment. Senior Year 1 and Year 2Our first few days back in the junior school have seen our classes getting straight back into their learning and they have been very busy! In the first week of Term 4, P22 kicked off our new topic, "Working and Having a Job," during Global Perspectives. We explored what it means to have a job, discussed different types of work, and learned about the role of hairdressers. As part of our hands-on activity, the students designed and cut creative hairstyles on paper plate faces, imagining themselves as hairdressers. It was a fun start to the term, and P22 enjoyed showcasing their fantastic designs! P23 have begun working on multiplication in Mathematics. They were learning that the first number in a number sentence is the number of items in each group, and the second number is the number of groups they have. The answer is the total number of items added to each other per number of groups (eg: 4 cookies for 2 children will make a total of 8 cookies: 4+4 ). The plenary and the exit pass at the end of the lesson needed the children to apply their learning and problem solve the tricky question. The table groups then shared their answers with the class but more importantly, explained their thinking. P6 Health Lesson: Food Production and Waste In this lesson, P6 has learnt about the stages of bread production, from harvesting to packaging, and how resources like water, energy, and effort are used. We explored how wasting food also wastes valuable resources and discussed ways to reduce waste. Students also reflected on the environmental impact of food waste in a supportive setting. It was a valuable lesson on sustainability and caring for the planet. In P7 this week, Miss Cole has taken over from Mrs Fleming and teaches the class Health, Art and Library. The children have really enjoyed their first few lessons with her and connected their pirate themed learning from writing to Art by creating their own self-portrait as a pirate. It was a great lesson spent getting to know Miss Cole and for her to see everyone’s pirate personalities! In P8: In Science we have been learning about forces and how forces can be used to change the movement of objects (e.g. speed, direction). The students have been discussing ways to explore the movement of a range of different familiar objects that roll/slide easily. The leaners were looking at different ways of making the movement of the object change and to look for patterns in movement. Pushing, pulling, sliding, bouncing and spinning. Term 4 in Years 3 and 4In Year 4…We are looking at how we can form a band during Global Perspectives, along with beginning our discussions and group learning about financial literacy in preparation for PreP day later in the term. In Computer Science the Year 4’s are learning about the programme SCRATCH and in Art they are beginning their observational sketches of birds. This week the classes have been exploring a range of both fiction and nonfiction texts, carefully rereading to find specific information and clues to develop deeper understanding of the main ideas and the purpose the author is meeting. In Year 3… Today during Global Perspectives, we collaborated in groups to discuss how to reuse materials and items, thinking of different purposes and ways we can use them. This is the beginning of our exploration of how to reduce, reuse and recycle in preparation for our design technology for PReP day later in the term. In writing the Year 3’s are beginning to explore playscripts and what features to use and include when we write our own. Our shared novel this term is the “Iron Man” which also links very closely with our exploration of Magnets and Forces during Science. All the classes are very interested and excited about what is going to be happening in the next few chapters. We are looking forward to sharing more of our learning as the term progresses. The Year 3 and 4 Teachers Nau mai hoki mai from Year 5 and 6!Year 5 and 6 would like to welcome everyone back to school and we are very much looking forward to the final term of 2024! Year 5 begin to prepare for their transition into Year 6, while Year 6 prepare for their transition into the Junior College! In light of these upcoming changes, we have been looking back and reflecting on the terms that have passed, acknowledging and celebrating all of our learning and growth thus far. Year 5 and Year 6 would like to share some highlights from Term 3 as well as what they are most looking forward to in Term 4! Year 5 - Reflecting on Term 3, a highlight for Year 5 was the writing and performing of our persuasive speeches. Each student dedicated significant effort to crafting their speeches, and it was inspiring to see them deliver their messages with passion and clarity. Their increased confidence and sense of achievement were evident after their presentations, and the Year 5 teachers are incredibly proud of all the students for their hard work and diligence throughout the process. Another standout moment for Year 5 was our Global Perspectives trip to the Zero Waste Zone. It has been heartening to witness the students applying what they learned during this experience to their everyday lives. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we’ve been bringing trash-free lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and our current record stands at an impressive 17 students participating! Our goal for Term 4 is for the entire class to have trash-free lunches on those days, fostering a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility. This term, we are also eagerly looking forward to several exciting events, including PrEP, Athletics Day, and the Christmas Picnic. Each of these activities provides opportunities for teamwork, sportsmanship, and celebration, making this final term one to remember. We can’t wait to dive into these experiences together! Year 6 - Term 3 was a whirlwind of preparation for the upcoming Cambridge checkpoint tests, with Year 6 dedicating countless hours to honing our skills across various subjects. This period was marked by hard work and determination as we aimed to excel in these important assessments. One of the standout highlights of last term was our production of "Finding Nemo." The experience allowed us to showcase our creativity and teamwork, and we poured our hearts into bringing this beloved story to life on stage. The performance not only strengthened our bond as a syndicate but also provided a wonderful opportunity to express ourselves and build confidence. As we enter Term 4, there’s a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air. We’re particularly looking forward to our upcoming trip to Birkenhead Leisure Centre, where we will challenge ourselves and push beyond our comfort zones by completing various physical activities. This promises to be a fun and rewarding experience that encourages teamwork and personal growth. Additionally, we’re eager to explore our entrepreneurial talents by creating small businesses during PrEP time, which will foster our creativity and innovation while giving us a taste of real-world challenges. With the school year winding down, thoughts of the Year 6 graduation ceremony linger on the horizon, promising a fitting conclusion to our primary school journey. It’s a time to reflect on our growth and achievements, celebrating the friendships and experiences that have shaped us. We look forward to making the most of this final term together, creating lasting memories as the students prepare to take their next steps. Planet Protectors Assemble! This week, the Primary Planet Protectors got together to begin our good work for term 4. During our meeting on Thursday lunchtime, consensus among the group was that we should focus on a small number of things to do them well. Our first focus is to keep the worm farm alive and well. We identified that the worms were not receiving enough food and what they had was quite dense, attracting a lot of fruit flies. A couple of our superheroes checked in with the property team to see if we had any sawdust they could donate, which helps to aerate the compost – and luckily they had! Today we were able to add sawdust in and the worms are now much freer to move around. In order to keep the worms well fed, we then turned our attention to the compost bins we had at each classroom in the primary. Recently we have not had a lot of compost, so out next task is to review the bin system and educate each class on what can go into thein bins. Next week, we will sit with different classes at lunchtime to see what we could add to the mix. The Planet Protectors are always keen to pass on their knowledge so starting next week, we will have a regular segment in our assemblies to offer tips and tricks on being a clean green eco machine. We hope you can jump on board too! Table Tennis Years 5-8I am pleased to announce that our Pinehurst table tennis team, comprising of Matthew Heng, Abigail Tao and Jayden Huang, won the Premier A League at the North Harbour Table Tennis Primary Intermediate school competition last night. Well done on their great achievement. Best regards, Pinehurst Music Department Message from the Principal of CollegeTēnā koutou katoa The Term 3 school break is never a quiet one for the College. This is traditionally a time when lots of senior students take opportunities to glean the last golden nuggets of help and advice from their teachers during tutorials; this year was no exception. Many students also had their first Cambridge examinations during the break which will continue into mid-November for most senior students. It was lovely to welcome Year 7-10 students back to school on Monday for the start of Term 4. All students should now be in summer school uniform and details can be found on our website. We do have a full term ahead with internal end-of-year examinations for Years 7-10, camps, trips and school events on top of our usual learning programmes. Year 9 have already had a busy start to the term with Cambridge Checkpoint assessments which went ahead this week. Students managed themselves very well through the process. During the break, a group of eleven students led by Ms Cadag and Ms Park, attended an exchange trip to IMAE School in Korea. Students spent time with their Korean buddies and families which gave them an authentic Korean experience. They also had the opportunity to try lots of traditional food including Korean barbeque, and there were visits to the presidential residence and Blue House, Yonsei and Hongdae Universities, and the Gyeongbokgung Palace where students wore traditional hanbok. The group shared some beautiful photographs from the Lotte Seoul Tower and also visited North Seoul Tower. They arrived back to school on Wednesday after a very full and interesting trip which gave them the chance to experience a different culture and way of living. We look forward to continuing our special relationship with IMAE School. At their assembly on Thursday, I reminded Year 7 and 8 students of how important their conduct is in maintaining the standing of Pinehurst School. When they wear their uniform with pride, treat others with respect and kindness and aim for personal excellence they become our very best advocates. I am looking forward to seeing our students demonstrating our school values as we move through the term, and I anticipate another great term ahead. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Dawn Sullivan College NewsExchange Trip with our sister school in Korea - Imae Middle SchoolDuring the last week of the holidays, twelve excited Pinehurst students accompanied by Misss Park, Ms Chen and Mrs Cadag flew overseas for an exchange trip with our sister school in South Korea - Imae Middle School. We all gained so many unforgettable memories, learned more about Korean culture, and created priceless bonds with our host families and each other. We first went on an excursion to Suwon, which is the home of Samsung Electronics - Korea’s largest company. During our three days in Suwon, we visited the Yungneung and Geolleung Royal Tombs and the Hwaseong Fortress which was born at the peak time of the Joseon Dynasty. We also dropped by Starfield Mall which is known for its beautiful library. Additionally, we visited the filming location of a K-drama called Lovely Runner and recreated the famous umbrella picture. We all enjoyed having an educational and fun time at Suwon! Next on our agenda was a trip to Everland Theme Park. We spent the full day riding thrilling roller coasters, seeing wild animals and eating delicious food. Although the wait times for the attractions were long, we managed to fit in a lot of fun activities including the haunted maze. After a wonderful time at Everland, we departed to Imae School to meet our host buddies. Some of us were reuniting with them and some of us were meeting them for the first time, but we all felt a spark of connection with them. At Imae, we had the same schedule as our host buddies and we experienced a different school life which we found very interesting! Every student and teacher at Imae welcomed us warmly at the opening ceremony and they all treated us so kindly. Our host families were extremely helpful and welcoming; we all felt like we were at home instantly. We deeply appreciate all of our host families, Imae students and the teachers for always treating us so kindly. However, the hardest part was having to say goodbye. Even though we only stayed with Imae and our host families for 4 days, we created inseparable bonds and made countless precious memories with them. Lastly, we travelled to Seoul - the capital of South Korea - where we spent the final 4 days. We visited Gyeongbokgung Palace where we rented Hanbok, traditional Korean clothing, and the, the Blue House (Presidential residence), and National Museum of Korea. We also went on a tour to Yonsei University and Ewha Women’s University which are both top universities in Korea and, of course, did some shopping at Lotte World Mall and Hongdae Street. All of us learned many new things about the Korean culture and had so much fun. We are incredibly grateful to have had this opportunity to travel to a new country, experience a different lifestyle, and make life-long memories with our host families and friends. Thank you to Mrs Sullivan, Misss Park, Mrs Cadag, Ms Chen and everyone who helped make this trip so special. - Gina X, Year 9
The night before October 5th was exhilarating for the Pinehurst exchange students, as we prepared for an unforgettable trip to Korea. The journey began with an exhausting 11-hour flight, but all our tiredness vanished upon our arrival at Incheon Airport. The modern and vibrant cityscape of Seoul had a vivid contrast to New Zealand, leaving a lasting impression on us. After settling into our hotel, the Pinehurst group embarked on our first cultural excursion to the royal tombs of the kings and queens. This visit deepened our understanding of Korean history and culture. Next, we got the chance to explore the impressive Starfield Mall, home to the famous Starfield Library, where we captured countless memorable photos as we have never seen anything like it before. Our adventure continued at Everland Theme Park, where we spent an exhilarating 12 hours enjoying a variety of attractions, from thrilling roller coasters to relaxing water rides. This day was filled with laughter and unforgettable moments, allowing the Pinehurst students to deepen their friendship with each other. After a relaxing two days, the heart of our exchange trip began on Wednesday. After checking out of our hotel, we excitedly traveled to Imae Middle School, eagerly anticipating meeting our buddies. The warm greetings marked the start of meaningful connections. The differences in class structures provided us with a fresh and enlightening experience. After school, we enjoyed various activities with our host buddies, deepening our bonds. The following day, Imae took us to a traditional folk village, where we immersed ourselves in Korean culture, making it one of the trip's highlights. This visit was vital in strengthening the relationship between Pinehurst and Imae, bringing everyone closer together. However, after four unforgettable days, it was time to say goodbye. Emotions ran high as we gathered in front of the bus, overwhelmed and sad by the thought of parting from our new friends. For many, the time spent at Imae was the most favored part of the trip, as it offered a completely new experience and forged lasting friendships. Our journey continued as we headed to Seoul for the final two days, visiting significant sites like the Blue House, museums, Seoul tower and vibrant shopping districts such as Hongdae street and the Lotte tower. Yet this amazing experience eventually came to an end and as we were boarding our flight back to New Zealand on a Monday afternoon,we reflected on the incredible memories we created. This exchange program not only provided us with unique experiences but also developed friendships that went beyond countries borders. We will undoubtedly miss our friends at Imae and us Pinehurst students will forever keep this memory with us throughout the years. - Silvia O, Year 9 Languages WeekLast week of Term 4 was a vibrant celebration of Languages Week at our school. Each day, we kicked off with fun quizzes that tested our knowledge of both languages. These quizzes not only challenged our understanding but also introduced everyone to cool facts about the cultures behind the languages. On Thursday we celebrated Spanish Day. We were lucky to have a chef, who prepared a Paella for us in the Amphitheatre. For those who might not know, Paella is a traditional rice dish from Spain, packed with flavour and colorful presentation. It was amazing to see students and staff lining up excitedly to sample the delicious dish. On Friday, we wrapped up the term celebrating Chinese day with the delightful and traditional treat of Tanghulu! These candied fruit skewers, often made with hawthorn berries, strawberries, or grapes, are a beloved street food in China, known for their glossy, sweet coating and satisfying crunch. These treats were sold by some of our Year 7 students. And guess what? Our Tanghulu sold out within 4 minutes! We did not have enough time to take pictures! We hope this week inspired everyone to explore languages beyond the classroom, fostering a love for learning about different cultures. Interact Disability Arts FestivalInteract is a 3 day festival that brings together people with disabilities from all over Auckland (sometimes from out of Auckland too!), providing them an opportunity to perform on stage and showcase their awesome-ness, abilities and talents. We also hold drop in workshops for those who wish not to go on stage. These include badge making, bracelet making, colouring in stations, hip hop dancing, circability and face painting, just to name a few and many more. It's a good opportunity and chance to try something new, meet new people and have a great day or two or three out! There's also an art exhibition, wearable arts parade and market stalls to check out. Who can come? Anyone with or associated with disabilities is welcome to come. School groups, organisations, individuals, parents, support workers, caregivers. Where is Interact Festival held? At Corbans Estate Arts Centre (426 Great North Road, Henderson, Auckland) When is Interact Festival? Wednesday 23 - Friday 25 October 2024 What time does the festival run? 10am-2pm What is the wearable arts parade? The wearable arts parade is an opportunity for people who do not wish to do a major performance but wish to see what it is like to walk across a stage. Costumes are available to wear such as fancy hats, hula skirts, leis, easy to slip on tops (they can go over the clothes that are worn by participants) and other props. We also have volunteers who help dress the participants and match different costumes and props to the participants interests. Participants walk across the stage then parade through the venue and ending back at the station to take off costumes. Some schools make costumes as part of their school project and this is more than welcome. Does it cost to participate or attend the festival? Completely free!
