In the old days bowls always had a disc of ivory or metal on both sides to distinguish one bowl from another. Now, in this plastic era, sometimes there is a design instead. The biased side has a smaller disc and should be very carefully noted every time, one hopes!

Auckland Champ of Champs events
Auckland's Champ of Champs season is fast approaching!. To all of our clubs out there, here are the links to the entry forms...
Interclub team entries may have been less than usual, but the standard of play and the quality of performances hadn't lessened - it was competitive as always. Played on three days, over two weekends, Interclub 8s delivers healthy club rivalry as game points are accumulated. At times it was a ding dong battle, many matches being neck-in-neck until the games were swung right at the last end. Then, of course, there were the matches where point differential would determine an outcome! Wherever your team may have ended up on the points table, well done to all participating. We look forward to the same competitiveness next season.

Women's Prem Division
First place for the Women's Prem Division was St Heliers. Here's what Amy Cheung had to say about her team at the 8s “We had good teamwork throughout and what was most special was encouraging each other during the games. With a bunch of juniors playing, this was important.” The St Heliers team won with a total of 58 points with Pt Chevalier pushing ahead of two other clubs to finish second on 44 games points.
Teams entered into the Half Day 6s were fortunate enough to be based at headquarters Epsom Bowls for the entire tournament. There are many reasons why players are attracted to this interclub event - time constraints, family commitments, work, or player experience - its format doesn't diminish the opportunity for bowlers to participate in a competitive environment. Just ask Team Kōtare from Rocky Nook Bowls what they thought about their first outing in Half Day 6s. They were pleased as punch to have won 8 out of 12 matches to finish fourth. It was an
amazing effort and result for their rookie team.
Interclub Half Day 6s winning team - St Heliers: (back row) Ken Batkin, Allan K Smith, Sue Smith (front row) John Ross, Graeme Bennett, Rostyn Jones John Ross from St Heliers commented; “We won 11 games out of 12! And this was a really special competition for us, as among our team we had talented juniors playing alongside sage experienced bowlers, including Graeme Bennett. Graeme is 94 years young and still plays a mean game of bowls.” Graeme was a last-minute substitute for a player who was recused with Covid – it’s a good thing he plays every Tuesday in local competitions and as often as he can. A life member of Auckland Bowls, Graeme is chair of the judiciary committee and chair of the Rawhiti Committee. St Heliers enjoyed all the teams in one venue, Epsom, and John remarked that the camaraderie and jovial banter across the rinks added to the success of the day.

5 April 2022
26 teams played in the penultimate Open Triples for the 2021/22 season sponsored by Morrisons Funeral Directors. The day was overcast, but the rain that was forecast did not eventuate so we played in warm and pleasant conditions. With six team prizes on offer the last round of games was going to be very “cut throat” and this proved to be the case. The bowls threw up some very interesting results, there were no four winners but there were 10 three winners. Daniel Richardson of Morrisons was there to present the prizes and he did enjoy and took part in the very jovial prize giving. Thank you, to all that made the day enjoyable, Richard, Rudi, Amy, Graeme Lill, Pauline, Iain, & Ross.

Better bowls with a better brain
Kohimarama Bowls
2 April 2022
Kohimarama Bowls Member and Past President Angela Caughey was interviewed on RNZ Afternoons with Jesse Mulligan on RNZ on Tuesday 5 April, about her latest book - A Better Brain for Life: Preventing Dementia and Other Chronic Diseases. It advocates for us all to be responsible for our own health and asks us to examine how we live day to day – taking practical steps to nurture our brain health to enjoy the long-term benefits of our well-being. This is Angela’s third book on the topic of dementia. She draws on the latest research to show what can be done to foster a healthy brain, ward off many common chronic diseases, and prevent, or at least slowdown, the brain’s decline.
You can read more about Angela and listen to the interview here.
