This phase 1 study is assessing the safety and pharmacokinetics of EV68-228-N, a monoclonal antibody against enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). Elizabeth AD Hammershaimb, MD, MSDr. Hammershaimb is an assistant professor of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her research focuses on clinical trials in children and adults; vaccines against biothreat agents, emerging infections, and malaria; vaccine hesitancy and acceptance; pediatric infectious diseases; and antimicrobial stewardship. ![]()
Zanthia Wiley, MD, named co-chair of the Mentoring, Career Development and Training Commitee (MCDC) ![]() Congratulations to Zanthia Wiley, MD (Emory), on being named co-chair of MCDC, effective August 1, 2025. She assumes this role as Igho Ofotokun, MD, MSc (Emory), steps down to serve as Chair of Medicine at University Hospitals/Case Western in Cleveland, Ohio. The network extends our gratitude to Dr. Ofotokun for his many years of service, leadership, and dedication as co-chair of this program. We wish him the best in his new role and look forward to the continued success and contributions he will bring to the field. Dr. Wiley is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine. She currently serves as co-investigator in the Emory Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit at the Hope Clinic and is an Atlanta Hub MPI on the NIH RECOVER (Long COVID) study. Dr. Wiley previously was an IDCRC mentee herself in the first cohort (2020-2021), participating in the very program she will be leading. Now, as a leader in infectious diseases research and an advocate for mentorship, we look forward to the unique perspective she will bring to this program in developing the IDCRC science workforce and leadership of the future. Emory Daily Pulse | New NIH-Funded Program to Uncover How Flu Spreads Through the Air ![]() Nadine Rouphael, MD, Emory VTEU principal investigator, is among a team of researchers who recently received P01 NIAID funding to study the transmission of influenza. She will serve as the principal investigator of the clinical core on this study. The program will bring together expertise in virology, immunology, aerosol science, and mathematical modeling to generate a high-resolution picture of flu transmission. The insights gained are expected to guide more targeted interventions—such as vaccines, ventilation strategies, and masking recommendations—grounded in a stronger understanding of how the virus truly spreads. University of Washington News | PhD student Angela Dahl captures Outstanding Student Paper Award Angela Dahl, a Biostatistics PhD student at the University of Washington, was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Written Student Paper Award by the Western North American Region (WNAR) of The International Biometric Society. Her paper, “A Bayesian joint longitudinal-survival model in calendar time for epidemic settings,” outlines a new method for vaccine studies that take place during an epidemic when the risk of infection can change rapidly. Angela's work was motivated by the IDCRC study, "Multisite Observational Maternal and Infant Study for COVID-19 (MOMI-Vax)." Her final publication will include the study's data. ![]() Emory VTEU principal investigator, Carlos del Rio, MD, ![]() Carlos del Rio, MD, infectious diseases physician, HIV/AIDS researcher, collaborative colleague, mentor, and global health leader, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 James Shepherd Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA). He was one of only five individuals in Georgia to receive the Hospital Hero award, and the only individual to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Job PostingsNewly Posted!
