Updates from the Alumni Society Board

Funding Initiatives

The Alumni Society Board is pleased to announce their funding initiatives for 2022–2023. Their flagship initiative is a study/work/learning support program that will be held throughout the fall and spring semesters. Refreshments will be available to Eberly students who can stop by during scheduled study hours to meet with teaching assistants.

The board will provide funds to the Prehealth Summer Bridge Program, an opportunity for underrepresented incoming first-year students in the Eberly College of Science who have an interest in health care to get a head start on their time at Penn State. The board’s funds will offset the cost of event travel and supplies.

The board also voted to provide a gift to the Department of Chemistry to upgrade outdated instruments and equipment.

In addition to these initiatives, the board will continue to support Science LionPride and scholarships for Education Abroad in the Office of Science Engagement.

GivingTuesday 2022 to Support Prehealth Summer Bridge Program

GivingTuesday is a global day of giving—celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and kicking off the charitable holiday season—that's fueled by social media, crowdfunding, and collaboration.

Our GivingTuesday initiative this year is focused on providing programmatic support for the Prehealth Summer Bridge Program in the college's Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which supports incoming first-year students in the college who come from historically underrepresented groups or are first-generation college students, and who are interested in a career in the health professions.

Find out how you can support GivingTuesday at Eberly!

"Science on the Spot" Events Held in the Philadelphia Area

Two events were held in the Philadelphia area last week, featuring Sarah Shandera, director of the Penn State Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos, who discussed how powerful new observatories are bringing us first-time views of vast areas of the universe, revealing an incredible diversity of objects and systems. We hope to offer more of these events next year! View the event photos on Flickr.
