Musical volunteers ‘good for the soul’
It is no secret that music is good for the soul. Coordinating Chaplain at Resthaven Paradise and Resthaven Leabrook, Rev Cate Baker, witnesses first-hand the benefits to residents that music brings, with the help of musical volunteers. ‘Volunteers add so much to the Resthaven experience. A four-page letter-writing action guide including a template has been prepared to help individuals and congregations advocate to the Australian Government, to fulfill its promise of pathways to permanency for those on temporary visas without further delay. The Christian Counsellors Association of Australia recognises that church leaders, staff and pastoral care volunteers are often a primary contact for their congregation and local community when life get hard. Two free webinars are on offer to equip people in ministry and pastoral care with the tools and strategies for implementing good mental health care in their churches and community … and for themselves. While Jesus predicts that people will die of fear ‘as they await what menaces the world’ (Luke 21:26), he says to his followers: ‘Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man’ (Luke 21:36). After I gazed for a long time at [Andrei] Rublev’s Trinity [icon] these words spoke to me with new power, ‘Praying at all times’ has come to mean ‘dwelling in the house of God all the days of our lives.’ Read more
