Heroes from the diabetes community were rewarded at the 11th annual Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Awards. As a result of social distancing, a limited number of people attended the ceremony, which took place on the evening of Thursday, October 14, at Sanofi’s UK headquarters in Reading. ‘Rebooting diabetes care’ is the theme of the first major diabetes conference in two years, with Diabetes Professional Care set to tackle some of the biggest issues facing healthcare professionals following a difficult 18 months. Diabetes Professional Care, which returns as an in-person event at Olympia London on 10 and 11 November, has been re-designed in response to the challenges posed by the pandemic. A team of healthcare professionals have produced a poster about diabetes care for people living with the condition and individuals working in diabetes care. The poster, PROTECT NOW, was created by the team at iDEAL Diabetes to enhance the kidney health of people living with diabetes. A new research study has identified that SGLT-2 and GLP-1RA are as effective as each other for improving cardiovascular and renal health in people with type 2 diabetes. The research reports that both GLP-1RA and SGLT-2 inhibitors reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events by up to 12%. A leading diabetes organisation has launched a ‘This is Diabetes’ art and photography competition as part of the its initiative to support World Diabetes Day. The Ascensia Diabetes Care competition is designed to use art and photography to highlight the importance of access to diabetes care, in particular medication, technology, care, support, nutrition and exercise, which is the official theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for 2021. Older adults with type 2 diabetes who have lower blood sugar levels are more likely to become frail and develop functional problems compared to those with a higher glycaemic state. A team of academics from King’s College London and the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Rotherham General Hospital conducted a systematic review to explore whether hypoglycaemia increases the risk of fragility and physical decline in older people with type 2 diabetes. More than five million adults in the UK – nearly 10 per cent of the projected adult population – will be living with diabetes by 2030, if further action is not taken to address soaring case numbers, Diabetes UK have warned. The charity’s startling prediction is based on analysis of Public Health England and The Association of Public Health Observatories’ diabetes prevalence projection models. Healthcare professionals are being invited to learn the signs of frailty in people with diabetes in an upcoming virtual workshop next month. Entitled ‘Diabetes and Frailty’, the workshop will explore ways frailty can be incorporated into routine care and increase awareness on the management of diabetes in relation to frailty or vice versa.
