Farewell to Terry Maunsell

This month we farewell Terry Maunsell, who will leave the Pharmacy Council of NSW after nine years of service. Terry was first appointed to the Pharmacy Board of NSW in 2009 as a member with expertise in hospital pharmacy. She transitioned to the Pharmacy Council in 2010 and was re-appointed twice. This month sees the end of her final term.

Pharmacists have a right (and obligation) to speak up

Pharmacists should remember that the health and well being of patients and the community should be their primary concern when dispensing medicines.

A number of recent incidents have highlighted the fact that many pharmacists are reluctant to contact and / or question prescribers.

Beware the absentee proprietor

Are you a pharmacy proprietor? Do you know what is going on in your pharmacy?

Two recent cases demonstrate how proprietors who did not take an active interest in their pharmacies were unaware of non-adherence to legislation. This resulted in missing schedule 8 drugs in one pharmacy, and excessive supply of schedule 8 drugs to a patient who subsequently overdosed in another.

Award of education and research grant funding

Congratulations to Ms Hayley Croft from the University of Newcastle whose application for grants funding has been successful. The Council has awarded a $10,000 Research and Project Grant to the university for her project entitled 'Simulation based assessment for evaluating pharmacists' competence in clinical decision making during medication review and supply’.

A case study of what not to do in your pharmacy

In circumstances where a pharmacist or any health practitioner finds themselves experiencing difficulties they should seek immediately help from other health professionals as required.  In a recent decision of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) a pharmacist admitted to not handling stress very well and engaging in conduct that in their words was “pretty stupid”.

Proprietors is that time again - Annual Renewals and Annual Declarations

Pharmacy proprietors and financial interest holders are reminded of the following important dates:

1 June 2018 - Due date for completed Annual Declarations.
30 June 2018 - Due date for payment of the Annual Renewal of Pharmacy Premises fee.

Please ensure you comply with the Council’s requirements.
