The NAMBUS visited the school in Week 7 and veterans spoke of their experiences in the Vietnam War and as servicemen. Year 10 students always enjoy being able to hear real life stories and learn firsthand of the experiences of these brave veterans who gave so generously for all of us. The bus will not be undertaking these visits to schools in the future but the time they have given to support student learning across the state over many years has been invaluable. I thank them for their generosity and wish them well for the future.
As we approach the end of this term and first semester, it is very pleasing to see that our students and staff are able to be engaged and participating in a full range of activities once again. The Athletics Carnival was held in Week 7 on a fine, sunny day and it was great to see students participating in the events.  A big congratulations goes to House Captains for their great style and colourful promotion of their House colours. There are also many other sporting events, debating, academic and cultural events scheduled in the coming weeks and into next term.
Parents and students in Year 8 will be able to attend an information session tomorrow afternoon to assist in choosing their elective subjects for Years 9 and 10. This will be in the MPC during period 5 until 4.30pm. Year 10 students had some ‘taster’ lessons last week in subjects on offer for Year 11 2023, and an information night for parents will be held in Week 2 next term. This will be followed by student interviews and final selection of subjects in the following weeks.
The P&C meeting which was postponed in Week 5 will be held tomorrow from 3.45pm in the Staff Common Room.  All are welcome so please come along and join us.

Ella at RAAF Richmond

In Week 3, Year 10 student Ella completed a three-day work familiarisation placement at the Royal Australian Air Force in Richmond after she was lucky enough to secure one of the 16 places on offer. Ella loved this experience which gave her great insight into RAAF life and all the jobs on offer. She has made great connections whilst there and formed new friendships with several other young people with similar interests. This experience has highlighted that there are many opportunities for woman in defence.
Well done Ella!

Newcastle Hunter Learning Hub

The Newcastle and Hunter Hubs have been running smoothly this semester with plenty of new faces, some wonderful transitions into work and school, and the opening of our new pop-up Hub in Cessnock.
Our current and new students have been getting to know each other and the staff by working together both academically and during break times. Some of the students have even been developing their table tennis and ball skills. We are going to have an Olympic team assembled in no time!

One of our new Distance Education students planned a trip up to meet her teachers at CHHS. She had a great time and loved the opportunity to interact with her teachers and see the school first hand, especially the animals at the agriculture plot. Well done Emily!

In the last few weeks we have farewelled one student into an apprenticeship to follow his passion for mechanics and another back into a local face to face school. Well done and congratulations to Andrew and Sierra, keep up the good work!

Mindful Moments

Mindful Moments
Mindful Moments

Mindfulness is being fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a calm, nurturing lens.
Living mindfully has been found to improve mental health and can help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, and alleviate digestive difficulties. It is easy to make mindfulness part of your life.
This week:
Start the day with gratitude

Gratitude is a positive emotion that involves being thankful and appreciative and is associated with several mental and physical health benefits. When you experience gratitude, you feel grateful for something or someone in your life and respond with feelings of kindness, warmth, and other forms of generosity. Gratitude has been linked to greater happiness, improved health and a greater ability to deal with adversity and build strong relationships.
