Message from the Executive Principal
Kia ora koutou, good afternoon, 下午好, 안녕하세요 Blueberries – jumbo ones! – are back in the shops; our trees have all turned green; fresh spring weather is managing to alternately warm our faces and freeze our ears; and young people in Pinehurst uniforms are bouncing into school clutching little plastic bags full of pens, pencils and calculators, excited to be sitting their exams. It’s the start of Term 4, and I love it. I hope everyone has had either a restful, an exciting or a productive holiday (or all of these!). The school was busy for those two weeks, and I’ve been delighted to see that our senior students, who are now deep
into their exams, have continued as they began. We can all see how seriously they have been taking their studies, and we’re expecting excellent results at the start of next year. Our Year 6 students have also been taking their Checkpoint exams this week, and I’ve been so impressed by the maturity with which they’ve approached them. Yes, sitting an exam is something to take seriously, and they have done so. But they have also been enjoying the week and have managed the whole experience really well. Thank you to Mrs Clark, Mrs Heighton and Mrs Berry for supporting the students so well, and thank you as well to all the parents for your work in preparing your children. The coming term is going to be an exceptionally busy one: quite apart from the Year 6 and 9 Checkpoint exams this week, as well as the IGCSE, AS Level and A
Level exams, our Year 4 and 5 students have their progression tests over the next couple of weeks, and Years 7, 8 and 10 have their exams in a few weeks’ time. And although, of course, there’s nothing quite as exciting as an exam, I suspect that some students may be looking forward to the Year 7 Raglan Adventure Camp in Week 3, or the Year 9 Out There Camp in Week 4, or the Year 12 Great Barrier Island Camp later in November. There are a host of other activities and trips taking place, so please keep an eye on the Calendar. We also have quite a number of events to which parents are invited. These include: On the 1st November, the Theatre Donors Evening On the 15th November, our Primary Sports Prizegiving On the 18th November, our Summer Garden Party On the 23rd November, our Valedictory Dinner for Year 13 students and their families On the 29th November, the Year 6 Graduation Assembly On the 6th December, our Primary Prizegiving On the 7th December, both the Year 7/8 and the Year 9-13 Prizegivings Also on the 7th December, our annual Christmas Picnic And on the 8th December, our Christmas Concert There are many other events, but I thought
mention these ones in particular. I wrote home yesterday about the Pinehurst Theatre and the purchase of our Grand Piano. As you’ll see, the first event on the list is our Theatre Donors’ Evening on November 1st: if you’d like to come to this, and haven’t yet donated, please just contact Sylvia Lum about making a donation and she can make sure you’re invited to the evening. And I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at our Garden Party on November 18th. It will be a lovely evening with a little entertainment, food and drink, and I hope to be able to enjoy my last Garden Party at Pinehurst in the company of our wonderful Pinehurst parents. It’s wonderful to have the sound of children’s voices rattling around the buildings
again this week, and I’m looking forward to a fabulous, packed term Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday. Ngā mihi Alex 如需阅读校长的中文留言和重要事件日期,请点击此处

As the year has progressed, so has the construction of the Pinehurst Theatre and College 5. The walls are finally up, and the site is beginning to take real shape, looking less like a construction site and more like the theatre we have only been able to imagine through artist impressions. The state-of-the-art facility is still on track for completion in March 2023 and we can’t wait for the Theatre to offer regular musical and theatrical performances, whilst giving our students a unique opportunity to gain valuable skills – both on and off the stage. The site tours will take parents into the heart of the construction (yes - time for hard hats and hi-vis!), to see in real time how things are progressing; take a sneak
peek into the future of Pinehurst and of course learn about the ways in which you can support us We currently have the following tour dates and times available (spaces are limited):
Friday, 28th October at 4:00pm
Friday, 11th November at 2:30pm
If you would like to attend, please RSVP to carmen.stella@pinehurst.school.nz for more information.
Message from the Principal of CollegeKia ora e te Whānau o Pinehurst School Term 4 has started well with College students arriving on day 1 looking great in their summer uniforms; there were lots of happy, smiling faces as students reconnected with their friends and readied themselves for a busy term ahead. With our Year 11-13 students currently on study leave, it was a good opportunity to hold an assembly for Years 7-10 on Thursday. This gave us the chance to celebrate some fantastic sporting successes including Terry Yu who had some remarkable results in
badminton. We were also treated to a wonderful piece from Crystal Su on the harp. Cambridge examinations are well under way for our senior students with some being taken during the second week of the school break. Day 1 of term saw many students sitting papers and the examinations process is now very much a part of our daily routine. Every day this week we have welcomed students into school to study together either in the library or in the study area and it is obvious that students are working hard to achieve their very best results. I was also very impressed with the way our Year 9 students conducted themselves this week during their Checkpoint assessments. An important part of looking after our students involves homerooms and PODs. Our homeroom and POD teachers are the champions of their
students; they support them, guide them and help them to navigate school life. We have decided that for 2023 we will add another POD per House and another homeroom in each of Years 7 and 8. This will ensure that our POD and homeroom teachers can continue to really get to know their students well and continue to have the space and time to give each student individual attention. Students in years 9-12 have been asked whether they would like to be a part of the additional PODs; no student will be forced to change PODs but this is an opportunity to be part of a smaller new group and some students will appreciate the opportunity. At the start of 2023 we will have seven PODs in each House and five homerooms in each of Years 7 and 8. Year 10 art and design students enjoyed a day at Auckland Art Gallery on Thursday where they were able to see the
Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera exhibition. I hear the exhibition is excellent and I am going to try to get there myself this weekend. Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy the three-day weekend and I look forward to seeing the students back at school on Tuesday. Ngā mihi nui Dawn

Teams made up of 2 boys and 2 girls competed to be the fastest team to complete the NZ Police Physical Competency Test with the winning team going on to represent the region at a National competition. Our team had a huge amount of fun, tested themselves and worked incredibly well together as a team. They should be hugely proud of their performance. Well done Aayoung, Nicholas, Edward and Chloe.
Shakespeare in Junior CollegeIn Year 8, students are studying their first Shakespearean play: Much Ado About Nothing. Here, they are building their knowledge of Shakespearean context and exploring how the play presents ideas of deception, love, honour and reputation. The class focused first on developing plot and character knowledge to build students’ enjoyment of reading Shakespeare, to appreciate the universal ideas behind the play and to expand their knowledge of the world. Throughout the unit, students have been given opportunities to experience the full power of literature and develop a love of reading and appreciate the artful crafting of language. Group
performances of the play have seen students embrace the challenge of reading and interpretating early modern English. Through their exploration of Shakespeare, students have been encouraged to find their own voices and speak with authority and confidence. Discussions about Elizabethan society, the Great Chain of Being, love and marriage during the Elizabethan era and expectations of women have been lively and enthusiastic and have informed their own analytical writing about the play. It is our aim that students feel confident reading Shakespeare and develop a life-long love of English.
National Chess Success During the first weekend of the October holidays, 5 Pinehurst Junior College chess players travelled to Christchurch for the New Zealand Chess Federation - Interschool National Finals, held in the impressive Christchurch Boy’s High School auditorium. The event was over 7 Rounds of play during two days with 120 students from throughout New Zealand. Each team had to win their regional finals to be invited to the national competition. Our Pinehurst Junior College Team, consisting of David Zhu, Nicholas Xu, Jerry Yang, Shuntaro Nozaki, and Daniel Zhang, trained every Thursday lunchtime since Term 1. Their
efforts, dedication and motivation paid off by winning Silver Medal at the Interschool Chess National Finals. Congratulations. This was an amazing achievement and continues to build on the successes gained over the past few years. A big thank you to Alex Huang who has coached the team over many years. His expert advice and experience as a FIDE Candidate Master, National Chess Arbiter, and a full-time professional chess coach, was invaluable and allowed our students to have the confidence and the developed skill set required to achieve success at this prestigious event. We would also like to thank the parents and other family members who travelled to Christchurch with their sons/daughters. Their support and motivation for the students throughout the two-day event was very much appreciated
Message from the Principal of Primary Kia ora, We have had a wonderful first week back in the Primary and the feeling around school has been busy and productive. Our Year 6 students have been our heroes this week as they sat their Cambridge Checkpoint tests in English, Maths and Science. They have been so focussed, sensible, and have given their very best to the assessments, we are really proud of them. We are looking forward to seeing how well they have done when they get their results later in the year. Later this term we will be visited by the Tread Lightly Caravan, a charitable organisation who
are going to run hands on practical learning experiences about the environment and how we can all learn to take better care of the planet. Next year will see a much greater focus on how we can take practical steps as a school and individuals to ensure that we take care of our resources. The last visit we had from Tread Lightly was thought provoking, fun and led to a number of initiatives at school and home around recycling and reducing waste. Welcome to our final intake of New Entrants for the year who have just joined P23. There were a few days of adjustment to life at school for some but by the end of the week everyone was a lot more settled and getting into the daily rhythms of the classroom. Starting school is a special time for families and will be remembered for years to come. Term 4 is the time we learn financial literacy with the Primary Enterprise Programme or PrEP. Over eight weeks there will be economics lessons learned around resources, money, running a business, and designing a product which will culminate in a market day at the end of the term. At the market, students will sell their products to each other using their wages or Pinehurst currency. PrEP is a very exciting programme and a fantastic way to learn financial literacy. Next week is also the final session of Waterwise for the year. I remember my very first experience of Waterwise, I had been in the country for around two weeks having worked in an inner-city school in Manchester leading up to moving to New Zealand, and I couldn't believe what an amazing opportunity students were getting in learning to sail an optimist boat. It is a
special experience and has led to years of enjoyment on the water for many of our past students. We will send home weekly Seesaw messages every Friday to list the events for the following week, which will help you to plan and have a smooth journey through Term 4. It is full summer uniform from next week and that includes a Pinehurst hat for play. Have a wonderful long weekend, we will see you on Tuesday. Nga mihi nui. Sian
Welcome to Term 4 from P17!Kia ora and welcome to term 4 from P17. We have had lots of fun building Marble runs in Design Technology. As part of our learning, we created marble runs from different existing products, this helped to give us ideas and understanding of how marble runs worked. We specifically thought about the stability of structures, joins and bends when constructing our marble runs. We also focused on the amount of time it took the marble to run and the smoothness of the marbles journey. This week we have been busy revising for our Cambridge
Progression Tests. We have had loads of fun working collaboratively whilst doing so. We have also been starting to discuss what we want to create for our Market Day later in the year. Students have been demonstrating their communication, collaboration and compromising skills throughout this process. Whilst we are still deciding what our ‘parent company’ will be we are enjoying the process. Kindness remains a focus and after reminding ourselves what it ‘looks like’, ‘feels like’ and ‘sounds like’ we created a class honeycomb design.
Looking at Materials in P5This term P5 has started to learn about fairy tales and our Big Write adventure will be The Wolf’s Tale. This week we have been reading the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and writing a character description. First, we brainstormed to create an eighth dwarf. Next, we gave our dwarf a name, and then drew and labelled what he would look like and how he would behave. Then, we did lots of sharing with a buddy to consolidate our ideas. For some of us our buddy was able to give us some suggestions to further develop our characters. After that we discussed using amazing openers in our descriptions to improve our writing.
Irene created a colourful and happy dwarf called Lolly. Jeremy shared his ideas about his cheeky dwarf called Hiccup. Yuanpeng told us about his dwarf called Cookie who likes to eat chocolate chip biscuits! In Phonics we have been learning and extending our knowledge of the ‘aw’ sound. We like to play phonics games as a way to imbed our knowledge. In Science we have been learning about the properties of materials. We started by labelling and sorting objects into groups of what they are made of and labelling them. We understand that all materials have a variety of properties and have been starting to explore why they are used for
different things.
We have also been creating a classroom culture where we show kindness to others. At the end of last term, we wrote little notes to celebrate all the great things we do to support each other and our learning. This week Mrs. Boniface gave us our ‘Envelopes of Kindness’ to read and then take home to share with our parents. Kelvin said it made him feel very happy to read what his kind friends had said about him. Our goal is to catch our friends’ showing acts of kindness as we begin term 4.
What's Happening in P15?We are off to a flying start to the term here in P15! All of the students have enjoyed a wonderful holiday and have come back feeling refreshed and ready to work hard for the final term of Year 5. And what a term it’s going to be. Here are some of the upcoming events that we are most looking forward to: - “I am most looking forward to PrEP because I like making arts and crafts. I get to buy things when we go to Market Day! I also like working with my company group. I wonder which job I
should apply for…” – Olivia
- “I am excited for Athletics Day. I would really like to do well in the high jump this year because it’s my favourite event.” - Ryann
- “I am excited for the Teddy Bears’ Picnic because I enjoy eating outside with my friends and our teddies.” - Isabella
- “I am really looking forward to assembly because I am going to play one of my favourite pieces on the piano when people are entering the arena.” - Jasper
- “I am most excited for PrEP and Market Day. It is one of the best days of the whole year because everyone gets to see what
the other classes have been making working on for their class business!” - Ethan
Last term, we were working on showing kindness to ourselves and others. We are carrying on with this focus for Term 4. At the beginning of this week, we made Kindness Wheels to help focus our kindness goals for this term! Here is a photograph of us with our kindness wheels!
Primary PEThis term in PE we have started to focus on athletics and then will move onto bat and ball games. Within athletics we are looking at the technique involved in all the throwing, running and jumping events which include Discus, Shotput, High Jump, Long Jump and sprints. Within athletics the students are encouraged to challenge themselves and set goals they want to achieve which may be to win certain events or to beat their personal best. Athletics teaches them not only to strive for their goals but also to show resilience if they don't achieve them
Badminton Age Group Nationals Anna (Sirui) Lu attended the New Zealand Badminton Age Group Nationals during the holidays. Anna, who is a year 5 student, competed in the U13 grade and made it into Semi Finals for the Girls Singles event. She also placed 2nd in the Girls Doubles event and 2nd in the Mixed Doubles event. A huge congratulations to Anna who was competing in an age group which is well above her age.

Jessica Hu, Artistic Swimming NZ National Championships 2022Jessica Hu took a place in participation at Artistic Swimming New Zealand National Championships 2022. She has shown an outstanding results and won: 2nnd place in Under 12 Team category.
News in P9After a two-week break, P9 have returned to school eager and ready for term 4. It is lovely to see the students’ smiling faces and hear their chatter and laughing. Everyone has settled well, and we are back in the rhythm of school life. Students are preparing for Athletics Day during sport and have a rotation so that they can practice the various events. Yesterday, P9’s rotation was the hurdles and shot put. In shot put students are learning that they must push the heavy ball and not throw it. This week
while Reading, Expi the Explore has helped us to make predictions about the storyline and the characters in our class novel, The Iron Man. So far, we have all been captivated by the giant and the little boy Hogarth and we are beginning to link words to help show that our prediction about the Iron Man being kind is right. Our Big Writing Agents have accepted our new mission and students are learning to add detail to explanations using who, what, when, where and why. We are using notes to gather evidence as to why the garden gnomes have left their homes. In digital technology we drew a sequence of pictures to create an effective flip book. We can explain how our characters move and it was fun to watch them come ‘alive’.
Pinehurst Sewing ClassesPinehurst have arranged for our students to have the opportunity to experience sewing lessons using a machine. ‘Threadroom’ is holding sewing classes on a Tuesday afternoon for Years 4-6 and Years 7-9 students. Further information and registration can be found on their website.
