Just a Game

Bowls, just a friend, to journey's end--

Unchangeable, day in and out the same, a blessing to have & something to hold,
that multitudes spontaneously acclaim more precious by far than mountains of gold.

Raising its song to drive dull care away, it brings to legions what it brought to me,
the sweet companionship of those who play, the game they love in all sincerity.

Gumboot Friday

Today, Friday 4 November, is Gumboot Friday 2022. Gumboot Friday is an initiative created by the mental health charity I AM HOPE that provides free counselling services for under-25s.

Fundraising events are happening around the country today, with all proceeds going towards connecting kids with counsellors. Donations can also be made directly by visiting the Gumboot Friday website.

Rocky Nook Bowls has rebooted its Audio Jacks event as a Gumboot Friday fundraiser. $10 for visitors & members will also be encouraged to donate & if visitors 'bowl in boots', gumboots that is - the club will match their donation!

Wishing Rocky Nook every success for tonight's fundraiser.

Another national title for Adam

During Labour Weekend, Pt Chevalier bowler Adam Baillie played in the Deaf Lawn Bowls NZ Championships held at Fitzroy Bowling Club, New Plymouth. He won the Championship Singles and was third in the Championship Mixed Pairs.

Adam has been selected for the Deaf Lawn Bowls NZ team to compete in Scotland at the 9th International Deaf Bowls Championships in 2023.

This young man has been thriving at lawn bowls since he started playing aged 15. He has collected a number of titles including, the Auckland 1-5 Year Pairs title for 2020-21, the Auckland Secondary Schools Pairs title for 2020, and the Men’s Singles title for NZ Deaf Lawn Bowls in 2019. Adam was a Counties Manukau representative player in the 2019-20 season.

Congratulations on your outstanding achievements so far, we're sure there are many more to come.

Hip hop at GEBC

Stepping up to the mat and playing on the green bought new meaning at Glen Eden Bowling Club.

Hip hop, rap/jazz artist Tom Scott and his musical project Avantdale Bowling Club were filming a new music video at the club recently. Avantdale Bowling Club is named after the place where Tom grew up, and its self-titled 2018 debut album won NZ Album of the Year.

One out of the box at St Heliers

Just as the Melbourne Cup is one of the most prestigious events for racing enthusiasts, St Heliers Bowling Club's annual Melbourne Cup Tournament ranks highly amongst club members and affiliates.

It was “one out of the box” on 1 November, when 28 teams jockeyed for post position to earn the great stakes sponsored by Bayleys Real Estate, David Nightingale & Sylvia Lund of Just Rentals.

In the winner's circle (pictured below) 1st place team of Scott Jolly, Mike Rapson and John Brown are congratulated by the Bayleys Real Estate thoroughbred team of David Nightingale and Ethan Mitchell.

Another anticipated fixture at SHBC was the Labour Day Hong Kong Pairs event. There was chaos outside the club gates as a major market festival relocated to the expansive green alongside the club, but it was all sunshine on the greens.

Pictured below are Louise Doherty (Lead) and Gavin Baker (Skip) looking pretty pleased to be the winning SBHC's Hong Kong Pairs.
