The diocese submits its findings from consultation sessions held in preparation for the 2023 Synod in Rome

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

In preparation for the October 2023 Synod of Bishops in Rome, Pope Francis asked every diocese in the world to conduct its own consultation process, the findings from which would be filtered back to the Vatican. Small groups in each diocese were to meet between October 2021 and February 2022, to discuss matters of concern.

But not simply “discuss.” Rather, to engage in a deeper encounter called “synodality,” the subject of the synod itself.

Each diocese was instructed to gather the written results of its synodal discussions, summarize them in 10 pages or less, and submit them to their national conference of bishops, to be pooled with other diocesan reports and sent off to Rome.

Bishop Larry Silva emailed his report to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Aug. 16. Read more...

Healing Hunger in Hawaii

From the Office for Social Ministry

That’s why organizations like Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger relief organization in America, is urging everyone to continue their efforts to help heal hunger even after September ends. Whether it’s the first, middle or last week of the month, food is a necessity no matter what time of the year. Feeding those who are hungry is a moral imperative and essential to our Catholic Social Teaching. Read more...

St. Ann, Waihe’e Family Faith Formation Kick-off Luncheon

From St. Ann Church, Waihe’e

St. Ann Waihe’e parish families enjoyed a Laulau Hawaiian plate feast together at their Family Faith Formation Kick-off luncheon on Sunday, September 11. The Kalo leaf that fed the families was planted during a youth stewardship retreat in May. Youth and their families learned how to harvest and clean the kalo leaves they planted in May and worked together to wrap the laulau days before they enjoyed it during the kick-off. The planting, harvesting, wrapping, and steaming were all made possible with a collaboration with the cultural non-profit group Ka Mana Loa ‘Ohana led by Joe Ponce and ‘ohana which promotes Hawaiian cultural practices with youth and keiki.

"Hope Heal Renew" - A Virtual Catholic Catechetical Conference, Nov 3-5

November 3 - 5, 2022

The theme of this year's Hope, Heal, Renew Catholic Virtual Conference is Gratefully Rejoicing as the Body of Christ can be understood as emblematic of Christian discipleship: that the Risen Christ accompanies us, teaches us, nourishes us by His Real Presence in the Eucharist, and sends us – gratefully rejoicing – to be life for the world as He is for us.

Whether participating as an individual, household, or watch party, you will find a welcoming community of faith as we explore this theme through experiences of prayer, liturgy, and spiritual retreat; lively and interactive presentations; conversation and laughter during “meet ups” with fellow participants, conference planners and exhibitors; and so much more.

Saint of the Week

Saint Vincent de Paul
1581- 1660
Memorial – September 27

Today’s saint was one of the brightest stars in the galaxy of saintly men and women who rejuvenated Catholicism in seventeenth century France. Saint Vincent de Paul established charitable societies that have endured to this day. He also founded male and female religious orders that still thrive in the twenty-first century. He was a trusted counselor to bishops, cardinals, and royalty. His ideas and vision reformed how seminarians and priests were trained so fundamentally that this vision became normative for the world-wide Church. Read more...
