Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterMay/June 2022 From the officeDear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, Four weeks to go until ZELLCHEMING Expo 2022, which will take place from June 29 to July 1, 2022 as a presence event at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden! In view of the positive experiences in the course of the Virtual Days 2021, ZELLCHEMING has expanded its role as a virtual pioneer and is organizing the Expo this year as a hybrid event with digital reach extension. The so-called ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days became Virtual World, a thematic island on the web where all content can be found, partly already before the Expo, in live stream during the Expo and as back-up for individual retrieval afterwards. Participants can register here for the ZELLCHEMING Expo 2022: "We bring our participants the best of both worlds: The on-site visit can easily be combined with an online login," explains Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH. The digital platform has been open to Expo attendees since May 30, 2022, and registered guests can already use it for networking activities. The content that exhibitors have already made available there also invites visitors to research information and prepare for their visit to the show. "Although we assume that numerous participants will join us stationary or mobile, we expect to welcome around 1,500 visitors live on site and therefore also place the focus of the event on the personal exchange that we have all been longing for," says Petra Hanke. It also fits in with this that the number of exhibitors has increased further to 120, meaning that the exhibition hall is as good as fully booked. "The Expo will not only be flanked by a substantial lecture program - but will also, in the course of a series of honors and award ceremonies for professional achievements, both at the beginning and in the course of a career, finally again directly express appreciation for outstanding personalities in this industry," says Petra Hanke. ![]() Source: RMCC/Peter Krausgrill AwardsOn the occasion of the 116th Annual General Meeting, scheduled for the first day of the trade fair, ZELLCHEMING will honor deserving personalities for outstanding achievements in scientific and/or practical fields of pulp and paper research and production and special services to the association. Among the award winners determined by the honorary committee are Armin Reinhard (honor: Alexander-Mitscherlich-Denkmünze) and Manfred Stemmer (honor: Walter-Brecht-Denkmünze). The honors will take place on June 30, 2022, from 09:30-10:00 a.m. at the Hall North Forum at the RMCC. The ZELLCHEMING Young Talents Award was presented for the first time on the occasion of the 100th Annual General Meeting of the ZELLCHEMING Association. It is awarded for outstanding scientific, technological and business achievements in the fields of pulp and paper production and refining as well as environmental protection to employees from industry and science who are younger than 35 years at the time of the award ceremony. The achievements are judged according to the criteria of scientific quality, novelty, economic and ecological relevance, interdisciplinarity, raw material and energy savings, product ideas, and plant and process improvements. This year's ZELLCHEMING Young Talents Award goes to Marcel Prinz. In addition, a surprise for particularly committed members of the association is in preparation as part of the ZELLCHEMING Summer Evening. This year, the summer evening will be celebrated in the tasteful Chausseehaus, in the middle of the greenery of the Wiesbaden city forest. The location belongs to a group of houses once used as a "summer retreat" with a forest district in the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park. Participants can expect a unique networking evening with a varied program and culinary delights. Bus transfer, food and drinks are included in the admission price. We look forward to seeing you again in Wiesbaden! Best regards and stay healthy! Dr. Ernst-Ulrich Wittmann We thank our sponsors ![]() ![]() ![]() Dates
From society & industryPaper Art Awards presentedFor the second time, outstanding works by international artists were honored with the Paper Art Award at paper positions berlin, the world's leading trade show for paper art. For the first time, two female artists received the award in bronze. The Paper Art Award has been presented annually at the paper positions berlin art fair since 2021. It was created by the Fine Art-Print Manufaktur d'mage, the ZELLCHEMING member company Hahnemühle and Canon Germany. With this award, the three partners honor first-class artistic positions that deal with the material paper in an outstanding, impulsive, and independent way. ![]() Image: Bronze was awarded to the work of Aja von Loeper, who works in Nuremberg. She convinced the jury with her impressive interplay of light and textures. The award-winning works are purchased by the House of Paper, the world's first museum exclusively for contemporary fine paper art. In this way, the collection of this unique paper art museum offers a platform for both established and up-and-coming artists and is also dedicated with great respect to all the craftsmanship and artisanal skills of the trades associated with paper as a material. From the membershipSappi abandons use of coal at its German site in StockstadtAs part of its long-term global commitment to climate protection and sustainable production, Sappi will be abandoning the use of coal at its German site in Stockstadt as a next step. To this end, the current coal-fired Boiler 9 will be decommissioned, and the mill will be operated using only renewable biomass and natural gas. This transition already started at the end of 2021 and is scheduled for completion by the end of September 2022. This fits seamlessly into Sappi’s large-scale projects to reduce CO2 emissions as part of its ambitious decarbonisation roadmap: for instance, with the fuel boiler modernisation at the Gratkorn site in Austria, fuel conversion to biomass at the Kirkniemi site in Finland and the installation of a new electric boiler at the Maastricht plant in the Netherlands. Sappi’s decarbonisation targets for 2025 include reducing emissions of specific greenhouse gases (Scope 1 and 2) by 25 per cent and increasing the share of renewable energy in Europe to 50 per cent (compared to 2019). Sappi’s Stockstadt mill was founded in 1898 and is one of Sappi Europe’s ten production sites. The exiting of coal is expected to reduce annual emissions in Stockstadt by at least 100,000 tonnes of CO2. This corresponds to roughly one third of previous fossil emissions. Moreover, the project is expected to have numerous positive benefits for the environment in terms of less traffic, noise, and waste. “The project marks a significant milestone in equipping the Stockstadt mill for the future,” explains Christian Dietershagen, Managing Director and Plant Manager at Sappi Stockstadt GmbH. “In addition to the positive climate impacts, we anticipate that roughly 700 truck journeys for waste disposal per year will be dispensed with, and that noise emissions will be reduced due to the elimination of various sources, e.g., the ramping up and down of the coal-fired steam boiler, operation of the coal mills, and the absence of truck shuttle traffic.” Additionally, the annual energy consumption is expected to be lowered from the current level by some 5 to 7 per cent. We are happy to welcome new members again this month! We welcome to the association ZELLCHEMING:
From the technical committeesGuided Tour by the Technical Committee Microbiology at the ZELLCHEMING-ExpoThe Technical Committee Microbiology (MBIO) will offer two guided tours for students on the topic of water treatment at the ZELLCHEMING-Expo on June 29, 2022 from 15:00-16:00 hrs and on June 30, 2022 from 11:00-12:00 hrs. The microbial and chemical quality of water is of immense importance to paper production. Many production problems can be directly linked to the occurring microbiology or chemical incompatibilities. The Guided Tour "Water Treatment" will focus on suppliers of treatment and purification concepts. Appropriately, two members of the MBIO technical committee will each offer a tour to introduce participants to this exciting field and create opportunities for contact. ![]() Dr. Kerstin Keppler, Chairwoman Technical Committee Microbiology Kerstin Keppler and Frank Dürkes are looking forward to many participants. The participation is free of charge. Since the number of participants is limited, we ask for registration. Technical Committee Paper MakingAt the most recent meeting of the Paper Makers' Association (PMAK), which took place at the paper manufacturer Schoellershammer in Düren, the dryer section was also on the agenda. The results of the following key points were presented by various working groups:
Afterwards, the participants agreed on the next step of the committee work: to develop a "checklist" for efficient dryer section operation. During the next meeting, the influencing factors could then be ranked in a prioritized order. Stay up-to-date and follow us! You can object to the delivery of our newsletter at any time.
