Diabetes inpatient teams across England are being urged to take part in a GIRFT survey to help create a snapshot of current service provision. Site teams are asked to fill in the questionnaire (one per site), which takes between 30 to 60 minutes to complete. A new guideline on how to manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes who require enteral feeding is now available. The Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP) has published these recommendations to improve outcomes among inpatients with type 2 diabetes while they receive enteral feeding. Young people with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes using closed-loop insulin delivery are more likely to have improved glycaemic management than those on standard therapy, a study has shown. A total of 96 young people aged between 10 and 16 years with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes started the trial, with 81 continuing to the extension phase. A newly published guideline is now available to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge they need to improve the treatment of adults with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar state (HHS). The consensus report has been drafted by expert clinicians from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS), American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) and Diabetes Technology Society (DTS). The severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in people with obesity could be significantly reduced if they start taking Tirzepatide – a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and weight loss. Made by Eli Lilly and Company, the weight loss jab could become the first pharmaceutical treatment for OSA – a condition where the walls of the throat relax and narrow, or close, during sleep. The use of the diabetes drug metformin in men during preconception and in women during early pregnancy did not appear to be associated with a higher risk of birth defects in children. Two studies have slammed previous findings that link metformin use by men in the three months before they conceived a baby to a 40 per cent increased risk of birth defects in their children.
