The last UK5G update of 2019

Welcome to the final UK5G newsletter of 2019! We hope you've found these fortnightly updates useful and informative.

In this issue, we hear from Ian Smith, 5G Testbeds & Trials Programme Director, DCMS

This year has been fantastic for the 5G Testbeds & Trials (5GTT) Programme.

During my time at DCMS, I’ve managed to see an augmented reality driven, Roman soldier led tour of the Roman Baths in Bath and visited the Orkneys to see how 5G connectivity and sensors are being used to maintain the health of a salmon farm. I’ve been to Millbrook Proving Ground to see how Autoair have delivered gigabit connectivity to fast moving vehicles and I visited the smart factories of Worcester Bosch and Yamazaki Mazak to see how they’re using 5G to maintain their machines and improve efficiency. I’ve also seen how 5G can improve health and social care in Liverpool and what smart farming applications can be powered by 5G in Somerset. It really has been genuinely eye opening, and not just for us as Government funding them; but for Industry too.

In the West Midlands, WM5G continues to gather pace and it’s great to see that series of testbeds develop. There have been some great demonstrations in the local area already and I know the team are excited to showcase more of their work next year.

Alongside project delivery, we’ve been working hard on the next phase of the 5GTT Programme. We recently closed two new competitions for funding, Industrial 5G and also our Rural Connected Communities (RCC) competition. These are really exciting initiatives and we’re looking forward to announcing the winners of those competitions shortly.

As a Programme, we’ve come a long way since it was set up in 2017 and I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made. This is a particularly enjoyable period for me. I get to look back on the successes and highlights of much of our work, safe in the knowledge that the future of the Programme is likely to be just as excitingly innovative.

Bring on 2020.

Ian Smith, 5G Testbeds & Trials Programme Director, DCMS

Featured Resource: The Fourth Industrial Revolution: How ready are you?

The extraordinary technological advances taking place in sectors as diverse as robotics, sensors, data analytics, IoT, 5G, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) together constitute a new industrial revolution, one that is at least on a scale with its predecessors.

But how and when will enterprises adopt these new technologies and capabilities? What examples do we have so far of how these different technologies – often used in combination – are being used? In short, how ready are enterprises for IR 4.0?
