Election Day is next Tuesday, November 5

Have you made your plan to vote yet? If you have not made your plan to vote, or if you need a reminder about key dates, absentee voting, or general voting questions, view the information below provided by the Emory Votes Initiative or the CDIC's 2024 Voter Guide by clicking the button to the right!

Can I vote early at Emory? If you’re registered to vote in DeKalb County, yes! There is an early voting station at 1599 Clifton Road, open 7 days a week through November 1. More info here.

 What if I want to vote on Election Day (November 5)? You’ll need to go to your assigned precinct, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Look up your assigned precinct location at My Voter Page under ‘Election Day Polling Place.’

Can I take time off work to vote? Yes, Emory employees may take up to 4 hours of paid time off for either early voting or Election Day voting. See the full policy here.

RYSE Health Equity Day
Tuesday, May 20, 2025 | Hybrid: Grady Hospital Trauma Auditorium and Zoom

Keep it on your calendar! RYSE, in partnership with the Office of Health Equity at Grady, will be hosting the fifth annual Health Equity Day! For the first time, Health Equity Day will be a hybrid event, engaging communities both virtually via Zoom and in person at the Trauma Auditorium at Grady Hospital. The theme for next year’s event will be Community Partnerships. More information to come in the upcoming months, so stay tuned! AFFINITY MONTHS

Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month

October is LGBTQ+ History Month! We are honored to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community here at Emory, both past and present, and all the contributions they have made and continue to make to the fabric of Emory! October is also Atlanta’s Pride Month, separate from National Pride Month which takes place in June. National Coming Out Day falls during the month of October as well, making October a very special and lively month for our Atlanta community! Check out the following highlights from this year’s LGBTQ+/Atlanta Pride Month!

Atlanta boasts one of the largest and most notable Pride celebrations and parades in the country! Many of our Emory community members showed up and showed out at this year’s parade to support and celebrate our LGBTQ+ community. Check out these photos from the parade!

 

For this year’s Branch Lecture, Tonia Poteat, PhD, MPH, PA-C delivered an impactful lecture titled “The Hidden Cost of Social Inequities: Addressing the Toll of Transphobia on Health”.  Dr. Poteat’s work focuses on LGBTQ+ health and HIV with particular attention to the health of transgender and gender-diverse communities.

Observed each October, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or “NDEAM,” we celebrate the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. In recognition of this month, see below for a list of resources and events hosted at Emory.

Interested in learning more about inclusive design and pedagogy? Jennifer Sarrett, PhD is facilitating a session on these topics titled: Universal Design and Inclusive Pedagogy tomorrow from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This will be a hybrid session co-sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and the Department of Accessibility Services. Learn more and register.

 

Emory’s Department of Accessibility Services is planning the university’s first Disability Inclusion Week starting today, October 28 through Friday, November 1, with a daily workshop or panel focused on equipping faculty and staff to become allies for those with disabilities. DOM ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Georgia Bio Golden Helix Awards recognizes ACME POCT

On Monday, October 21, Georgia Bio, the state’s life science trade association, honored the ACME POCT with the GoldenHelix award at their recent Georgia Life Sciences Summit. The Golden Helix Awards celebrate the contributions and achievements of Georgia leaders, such as Emory and its partner institutions, Georgia Tech and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, who are working to advance the growth of the life sciences industry and foster strategic partnerships that can create a healthier world. They presented this award to ACME POCT for the most significant financial or commercial transactions in fiscal year 2023. To learn more about this grant, read the original 2023 announcement here.

“Our Center is privileged to receive this latest support from NIH to support our work with inventors and companies in advancing innovative technologies that will provide new and better diagnostics and health monitoring tools that are impactful for both clinicians and patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our unique combination of engineering, clinical and regulatory expertise allowed us to rapidly pivot and to serve as the national test verification center for consumer and other point-of-care tests, and that expertise is now available to people around the world,” says Greg Martin, MD, MSc, (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) one of the three principal investigators.

Emory well represented at IDWeek 2024

Earlier this month, from October 16–19, IDWeek 2024, the joint annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, was held in Los Angeles, California. Over 10,000 ID health professionals from various institutions and backgrounds around the world came together to collaborate, connect, and learn from each other’s patient care, research, and public health expertise. The Department of Medicine was well represented at IDWeek with a large number of residents, fellows, and faculty members not only in attendance but also serving as presenters and moderators.

  • Colleen Kelley, MD, served as the Program Chair for HIVMA and presented updated information on PURPOSE 1 and 2, two important clinical trials using Lenacapavir for PrEP.
  • Wendy Armstrong, MD, Interim Director of the Division of Infectious Disease and the incoming vice president of IDSA moderated a panel at the Women in ID Breakfast titled “SHE for SHE”: A Masterclass in Supporting Other Women in ID
  • Varun Phadke, MD, presented on teaching clinical reasoning.
  • Jonathan Colasanti, MD, presented on real-world experience with long-acting injectable therapy for HIV.
  • Our Department Chair Carlos del Rio, MD, participated in the Opening Plenary titled Navigating the Next Pandemic: Policy and Practice Integration.
  • Yasha Joseph, Emory College Class of 2025 and INSPIRE (Infectious Diseases Summer Program Integrating Research at Emory) Student, presented “Summer Fever: Heating Up Diversity in Infectious Diseases at the Undergraduate Level: Being INSPIREd: My ID Summer Program Experience” session, which was organized and moderated by Zanthia Wiley, MD.
  • Laila Woc-Colburn, MD, served as a panelist for the “Challenging Cases in Infectious Diseases”
  • Zanthia Wiley, MD, served as a panelist at the IDWeek Annual Dr. George W. Counts Interest Group Dinner, a group of Black/African American Infectious Diseases physicians, scientists, and advocates who are committed to advancing health and systemic equity in medicine and the field of ID.

In total, Emory was represented by 72 presentations given by 50 speakers and 71 posters from 93 poster presenters. To see the full list, visit the 2024 IDWeek page HERE. CFAR and RHYTHM host the inaugural Community Connections 

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Emory Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Clinical Research Core and Emory Research in HIV and Women’s Health and Y This Harmony Matters (RHYTHM) hosted the inaugural Community Connections at the Grady Ponce de Leon Center.

This community event was aimed at celebrating participants for their dedicated collaboration and creating engaging conversations around topical research. This Community Connections was thematically geared to explore What’s Hot and What’s New in HIV Treatment and Care. Through poster presentations and lectures, attendees had the opportunity to learn about a diverse breadth of research ranging from socioeconomic and policy barriers to care that can impact health outcomes to the importance of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and the physiological impacts of ART.

Building Community and Connection: 
Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology Fall Social

The DOM's Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology faculty, staff, fellows, and their families gathered at the Michael C. Carlos Museum for their Fall Social. After enjoying the museum's exhibition Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery, attendees enjoyed dinner and time to connect. 

The fall social is an important part of maintaining a sense of community for the division. It also provides an opportunity to see each other in a non-work setting, meet each other's families, and connect with members of the Division across mission areas who may not otherwise interact based on different primary work locations.

Search for New Assistant Clerkship Director
in Critical Care Medicine (CCM)

The School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for a faculty member to serve as the Critical Care Medicine (CCM) Assistant Clerkship Director for the MD program. The assistant clerkship director will work with the current clerkship director and coordinator to be responsible for the administration of the critical care medicine clerkship. The specific delineation of the duties is to be determined in conjunction with the existing clerkship director. The successful candidate will exhibit expertise in critical care medicine, experience in medical education, and will collaborate effectively with all stakeholders.

Change to VPN Experience: Duo Authentication

In order to further improve the security of Emory's network, beginning today, October 28, Emory will begin requiring more secure Duo second-factor authentication options when logging into Emory's VPN service (vpn.emory.edu).

Please ensure that you have enrolled the Duo mobile app on your smartphone to continue to be able to use VPN. If you have already enrolled the Duo mobile app on your phone, you are ready for this change and there is nothing more that you need to do. You will no longer be able to use phone calls or codes sent by text message to log in, and you will need to enter a numeric code to accept a push.

Starting today, when you log into VPN, you will have a more limited set of Duo second factor options to choose from:

  • Duo Verified Push (see below)
  • Using a Duo passcode generated with the Duo mobile app

The Emory Integrated Biorepository Core (EIBC), one of the Emory Integrated Core Facilities (EICF), is supported by the SOM. It is built with a strong commitment to provide short- and long-term open collaborative support to all SOM faculty with a primary goal of providing storage, tracking, and retrieval of biospecimens necessary for their research goals.

Opened in May 2024 within the newly constructed HSRB II building, is the fully automated Hamilton BiOS M7 -80°C biorepository freezer which has been configured to hold over three million samples. Please contact EIBC's Core Director, Mohammad Sohrab Hossain M.Pharm, PhD, SCYM (ASCP), at mshossa@emory.edu to inquire about storing your samples.

This is also the time for you to set aside funds for your 2025 Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Dependent Day Care FSA, or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Your benefits newsletter, with information about this year’s enrollment has been mailed to your home address which outlines the many changes occurring this year. You can also view it here. The annual enrollment website also contains all of the information you need for this year's enrollment.
