Outside In: Patient Artwork Project 2021–22

Outside In is an established charity in the UK that aims to provide a platform for artists who face significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. They have recently announced the launch of a new two-year project: "Patient Artwork: New Dialogues".

The project will bring together artists facing barriers to the art world with three organisations with historic collections from asylums and psychiatric hospitals, delivering specialist training programmes to support artists to develop new skills and perspectives on these archives.

Across the UK, a number of museums, galleries and archives hold collections of work created by patients who were at some point admitted into psychiatric hospitals. Work that has been created by artists or patients with first-hand experience of these hospitals gives an insight into the changing heritage of the treatment and attitude towards people experiencing mental health issues.

This project will focus on skilling up artists, who perhaps have their own experience of mental health issues, to be able to explore, research and interpret collections of historic art work created by patients during their time in psychiatric hospitals across the UK.

As part of the two-year project, Outside In will be delivering a number of Step Up: Exploring Collections courses with each partner organisation, giving participants the opportunity to explore, research and interpret these fascinating collections.

Tyree Guyton: Short Film

Martos Gallery presents a digital re-screening of a documentary about the amazing Detroit outsider artist Tyree Guyton. The short film screening is introduced by actor, author, collector, and activist Hill Harper,

Guyton created the visionary environment known as the Heidelberg Project.

Introduction: "Hill Harper Art Basel OVR:20c" by Martos Gallery, 2020

Having grown up on Heidelberg Street and witnessed the tragic effect of the Detroit riots as a child, Tyree Guyton (b. 1955) set about cleaning up the decaying area with the help of his grandfather Sam Mackey, his former wife Karen, and neighbourhood children. In 1986, using the refuse they collected, Guyton began to transform the street into a massive open-air environment.

Documentary: "Come Unto Me, The Faces of Tyree Guyton",  produced by Nicole Cattell (1999)

In constant battle with the authorities since beginning his project, Guyton continues to decorate abandoned buildings, vacant lots and pavements with all manner of discarded objects such as shoes, toys and old bicycles. His own paintings and messages cover the area, as well as the brightly painted polka dots that have become the trademark of the Heidelberg Project.

Tyree Guyton's Heidelberg Project

Through his art, Guyton highlights the problems of poverty and urban ghettos, aiming to save forgotten neighbourhoods and inspire people to use art as a means to enrich their environment.

The Dotty Wotty House and Penny Car

Now in its 34th year, The Heidelberg Project (Detroit, MI) is one of the most influential art environments in the world. Founded by native Detroit artist Tyree Guyton in 1986; the HP was paramount in visually depicting societal ills and injustices, while simultaneously creating provocative art installations and free standing sculptures in a marginalized Detroit community.
