Creating Opportunities.International Day of People with Disability and Disability Action Week has wrapped up for 2022, and what a time it was! Carers Queensland’s campaign, ‘Celebrating inclusion. Creating opportunities.’ drew on the themes of International Day of People with Disability and Disability Action Week, highlighting and celebrating the changes already taking shape in communities to break down limiting structures and attitudes that are barriers for people with disability. In Australia, this matters to 4.4 million Australians with disability, and it is our hope and aim that we play a part in making sure it matters to the other 21 million Australians as well. Special eventAt our special event in Brisbane we were joined by Bus Stop Films short films stars Allycia and Olivia from ‘We’ll Always Have Dance’ and ‘Sunshine’. Olivia and Allycia shared their enthusiasm and passion for their creative work and spoke about why inclusive filmmaking opportunities are important. Our panel of speakers included Suzanne Dang, Tim Lachlan and Alberto Campbell-Staines who spoke about removing barriers and celebrating successes in advocating for and making changes to improve access and inclusion for people with disability. “I find kids, they get curious; I guess that’s the word I can put for that situation. I work at a school that I used to go to, I work there as a sports teacher aide and everyone knows I have an intellectual disability, but the thing that is amazing about working at that school is that no one treats me differently,” Alberto said. “They see me as a person without a disability, and they treat me kindly, respectfully; it is amazing to see the difference between kids treating someone once they find out they have a disability or intellectual disability compared to adults that don’t quite understand.” Photo caption: Our Rockhampton LAC team during the IDPwD event hosted in conjunction with Capras Community Care. IDPwD around the regionsAs one of the largest NDIS LAC Partners in the Community, we jumped into International Day of People with Disability and held or supported events in our regional communities to celebrate all things disability, access and inclusion. In Ipswich, people with disability, family members, supports and staff, watched and listened to the incredible voices of individual artists Rose, Sarah and Wayne and dance performances by five talented dancers from Dance Troupe! In Rockhampton, our LACs joined forces with CQ Capras for an all-abilities sports day and focus on families who were transitioning to the NDIS. In Logan, we were joined by Ikuna Voices, Tim Lachlan and Shane Falconer, and the local community to share stories of achievement and inclusion and have a load of fun. Special episode of Choice and Control podcastOur special episode of Choice and Control was released for IDPwD and featured personal trainer, Shane Falconer, journalist and radio producer, Braeden Jason, freelance virtual assistant, Justine Fox, and nature photographer, Michelle Taylor-Holmes. From heart to murals: 'Painting around' for lifeBefore having children, Charndra was an art teacher for 12 years in South Australia. She is a carer to her 13-year-old son who has autism and severe Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Due to the demands of her caring role, she had to resign from returning to classroom teaching. Charndra is also a social artist, and since 2017 she had been creating artworks and murals with different groups of children and adults. As she was trying to think of possible ways to get back into the workforce, she learned about Your Caring Way. After joining the program she started working out the next steps to keep her 'Painting Around' business moving. She hasn't stopped since then.
