Student Success Stories

Congratulations to the following students!

Jose Ibarra took and passed his Naturalization test in February. We were so proud of him. Jose said to his teacher, Tina, "Teacher, you were a big help, especially in Civics!" Jose attended every class, participated in class, listened, took notes, reviewed lesson notes, and introduced Tina to his family. Jose's goal was to pass the test and become an American citizen, also inspiring his grandchildren.

Literacy Pittsburgh student David explained that as a French-speaking refugee, his first goal was to learn English. “It is a key to open all doors that mean education, communication, health and integration,” he says.
David wants to get a good job and create the best life for his wife and four children in the future.

David’s progress in learning the English language has been remarkable. “Literacy Pittsburgh is a ideal place for all persons, all Pittsburghers who need to achieve their goals.” David explains. “It’s the best place here. I like it.”

Congratulations to one of Shirley's students for passing her citizenship test and becoming a U.S. citizen last month!

Congratulations to Olena for writing, producing, and acting in her play I’M SORRY, I DON’T UNDERSTANDING: A Play by Olena Boryshpolets & Anouar Rahmani.

In the play, Olena is from Ukraine and flees her country due to war. Olena arrives in Pittsburgh and meets her neighbor Anouar from Algeria who fled his country because of the government’s persecution for supporting LGBT rights. They became friends. One day they realized that to move on, it was important to tell each other their stories. The premiere was on Monday, March 25 at City of Asylum.

Share your success story with us! You can help inspire others who are overcoming barriers and working toward their goals. Email it to Najlaa at nebrahim@literacypittsburgh.org
