This week I’m taking a break from the Domains, to focus on Mental Health and Wellbeing. Tuesday 3rd May is University Mental Health Day. We know that undertaking a higher degree by research can be stressful, with imposter syndrome, a competitive environment and the challenge of navigating new professional relationships while trying to maintain a work-life balance. Your mental health is always important, but events like University Mental Health Day can be a reminder to check in with yourself, with those around you, and with the services available to you as an HDR candidate. We also have the Mental Health and Wellbeing series of workshops starting in May. The in person sessions are popular, so if you have secured a place please make sure to cancel if you aren’t able to attend, so another student can benefit from the workshop. If you are on the waitlist or can’t attend, these sessions are also available online. Checking in with yourself How are you? If you are having trouble with your research or in your personal life, this can impact your mental health. Warning signs include not taking care of yourself – for example not sleeping or eating properly, increased drinking or use of other substances; or avoiding your research or meetings with your supervisor. The Black Dog Institute has a range of self-assessment and self-help materials for you to explore. Getting Help If you aren’t okay, please find support. If you are struggling, the Counselling Service is available 9-5, Mon to Friday, The University Crisis Line is available 5pm-9am and 24 hours on weekends or connect to Talk Campus, a peer based network available for download using your student ID. Also consider the other supports available to you such as your supervisors, your fellow HDR students, or friends and family. Staying Well If you’re doing okay, then think about strategies to stay that way. The Wellbeing Hub has some great suggestions for wellbeing boosters. For me, one of the best things I can do for myself is spend some time in nature. I particularly love walking by the ocean, and I’ve attached a photo I took in Robe about 6 months ago. Keen eyed readers may be able to spot a tail from a seal I saw jumping around in the waves near the cliff. Make sure you schedule time to do something that boosts your wellbeing, or try something new!
