Recap of 2024 Resident Research Day

For more than two decades, the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has hosted this annual event to showcase our residents' research achievements and celebrate the collaboration between residents and dedicated faculty.

Resident Research Day Grand Rounds featured a keynote speech from Siva Bhavani, MD, (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine), titled, "From Antiquity to Big Data: A Vital History of Body Temperature" and resident oral presentations from three of our residents (listed below).

  • Lana Aleuy, DO, PGY2 Resident: "Successful Integration of Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment into a Primary Care-based Liver Clinic"
  • Maya Patel, MD, PGY2 Resident: "Lymph Node Metastasis with Small Duodenal Neuroendocrine Tumors: Implications for Endoscopic Management”
  • Youssef Saklawi, MD, PGY3 Resident: Fever of Bovine Origin"

The event also included an in-person poster presentation session at the School of Medicine. Kudos again to the presenters, award winners, and all participants on their extraordinary work!

Announcing the upcoming retirement of Jeffrey Lennox, MD

Please join the department in congratulating Jeffrey Lennox, MD, Chief of the Emory Medical Service at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Associate Dean for Clinical Research at Emory University School of Medicine, on his upcoming retirement. Dr. Lennox plans to retire on June 30, 2024, after a three-decade-long career at Emory University and the Grady Health System.

Dr. Lennox has been an invaluable contributor to the Emory community as a highly respected investigator, clinician, educator, and leader. He has served as Associate Dean for Clinical Research, at Emory University's School of Medicine since 2010 and as Department of Medicine Vice Chair for Grady Affairs/Grady Chief of Emory Medicine Service since 2009.

After his retirement, Dr. Lennox will serve as an advisor and mentor for faculty taking on leadership roles at Grady. He will also continue to consult as a preceptor for ID fellows in the outpatient HIV clinic at Grady. Congratulations to Dr. Lennox on his upcoming retirement after over thirty years at Emory and his many invaluable contributions to the field of Infectious Disease research and to clinical research across the Woodruff Health Sciences and at the Grady Health Systems.

Interviews for the next Chief of the Emory Medical Service at Grady Memorial Hospital are in process and more information will be announced soon.

DOM faculty receive NIAID funding for INSPIRE project

Congratulations to the Division of Infectious Diseases faculty, Michael Chung, MD, MPH, PhD, Zanthia Wiley, MD, (pictured left to right), and Department of Biology faculty member, Anita Corbett, PhD, on receiving a five-year grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for a project entitled, “Infectious Diseases Summer Program Integrating Research at Emory (INSPIRE)." The project has been awarded $340,000 in year one and then $355,000 annually in each of the next four years for a total five-year grant of over 1.7 million dollars. Drs. Chung, Wiley, and Corbett will be the MPIs for the INSPIRE program which aims to prepare 48 underrepresented undergraduate students from throughout the country for a career in ID research.

This goal will be achieved by exposing INSPIRE students to hands-on research, conducting courses for professional and research skills development, and strengthening Emory’s mentorship capacity to address identity and underrepresentation. The five-year grant will accept a new cohort each year who will spend the summer in Atlanta and will also be mentored for nine months afterward for a total of 12 months of training and mentorship in ID research by Emory faculty. A successful pilot program was performed last summer (2023) that gave a beautiful glimpse of the impact the PIs hope to accomplish with this five-year INSPIRE program.

“Our pilot cohort of five undergraduate students (four African American women and one Latino male) from across the U.S. was a major success. They were mentored by both research mentors and “identity” mentors (with shared lived experiences). One of our students is co-author on a basic science manuscript and two students have presented their ID research at national conferences. We hope for a future of infectious diseases researchers who reflect the diversity of our communities and who will contribute to innovations that benefit us all.” —Zanthia Wiley, MD

Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine's
Academic Internal Medicine Week

The Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine held its annual Academic Internal Medicine Week meeting April 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio, and Emory kept our tradition of a very strong presence in delivering meeting content, which is where national leaders in internal medicine education across UME and GME gather to network and learn from each other.

Of special note, Danielle Jones, MD, FACP, received the Associate of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Distinguished University Associate Program Director award. Dr. Jones also moderated an open forum on faculty development and a plenary with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education- Review Committee (ACGME-RC) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Emory faculty and residents led 10 workshops, including three faculty-led workshops for the Chief Resident meeting (Jennifer Spicer, MD; Colin Washington, MD; Reena Hemrajani, MD), one workshop for the Chief Resident meeting led by our current chief residents (Alisha Arora, Martin Campbell, Alvaro Ceballos, Charlie Fortin Leung, Dee Gill, Alex Matelski), one workshop for the Chief Resident meeting led by last years' chief residents (Shub Agrawal, MD; Alex Galloway, Joey Sharp, and Colin Washington), and four separate faculty-led workshops (Dheepa Sekar, MD; Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD; Kimberly Manning, MD; Stacy Higgins, MD; Karen Law, MD; Jennifer Spicer, MD; Mikhail Akbashev, MD; Bhavin Adhyaru, MD; Daniel Dressler, MD, MSc, SFHM; Patricia Cheung, MD, MPH, PhD).

Society of Hospital Medicine’s Converge Annual Meeting

Each year, more than 3000 academic and community hospitalists gather from around the United States for the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Converge annual meeting. Emory’s Division of Hospital Medicine put on a strong showing at this year’s Converge 2024 meeting in San Diego, California. Eleven division members spoke at pre-conference courses, workshops, or didactic talks, and more than 20 faculty were authors on poster presentations.
