Take a look at Committee for Wyndham's August

A Look at August Highlights

A Message from Our CEO, Leanne Down

I’m pleased to reflect on another rewarding month at the Committee for Wyndham. Each initiative, event, and conversation continues to strengthen our mission—to advocate, connect, and educate our members and the wider Wyndham business community.

August was marked by two standout moments. Our 14th Annual Economic Update Lunch brought together business leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders for an afternoon of economic highlights. Attendees heard directly from Luke Yeaman, Chief Economist and Head of Global Economic & Markets Research at NAB.

We were also privileged to host an exclusive tour of the Parliament of Victoria, led by John Lister MP, Member for Werribee. Members gained meaningful insight into the workings of Parliament and engaged in a thoughtful discussion with Mr Lister about the future of our region.

As always, I thank you for your continued support and active participation. Together, we are strengthening Wyndham’s position as a thriving place to live, work, and do business.

Warm regards,

Leanne Down
Chief Executive Officer

14th Annual Economic Update

The Committee for Wyndham hosted the 14th Annual Economic Update Lunch, bringing together Melbourne's leaders and community representatives for an afternoon of economic updates. Attendees learnt about the key economic forces influencing both the national and international landscape and gained critical perspectives to navigate the year ahead.

This year’s 14th Economic Update was delivered by Luke Yeaman, Chief Economist and Head of Global Economic & Markets Research at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. With more than 25 years of experience spanning the Commonwealth Treasury, Prime Minister’s Office, and now Australia’s largest bank, Luke shared a clear analysis of global, national, and local economic conditions.

Mr Yeaman's presentation covered the current economic challenges for businesses, including global market volatility, inflationary pressures, Australia's policy landscape, and opportunities in regions like Wyndham.

We extend our sincere thanks to our event sponsors — Williams Landing - Cedar Woods, and Commonwealth Bank — for their ongoing support in making this landmark event possible. Thank you, Shadow Fax Winery, for setting the prestigious ambience and Lizzy Jacobs Photography for capturing the day.

The Annual Economic Update has once again proven to be one of Wyndham’s most significant business gatherings, reinforcing the Committee’s mission to advocate, connect, and educate on the issues that matter most to our region.

Tour of Victorian Parliament House

On 28th August, members of the Committee for Wyndham were welcomed to the Parliament of Victoria for an exclusive tour hosted by John Lister MP, State Member for Werribee.

Mr Lister guided members through the history and significance of Parliament House, followed by candid discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing Wyndham. The conversation continued over tea and coffee, allowing for meaningful connection and exchange.

We were honoured to be joined by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, who met with members to learn more about their businesses and aspirations for the Wyndham region. Members also heard from Mathew Hilakari MP, State Member for Point Cook, who, alongside Mr Lister, shared further insights into the history, architecture, and traditions of Parliament House.

The visit included the rare opportunity to observe both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council in session, offering members a deeper understanding of parliamentary proceedings.

The Committee extends sincere thanks to John Lister MP for hosting, to Wyndham’s MPs for their collaborative efforts, and to Katrina Bye of The Gordon, Committee Board Member, for joining us on the day. Most importantly, we thank our members for contributing to an insightful and engaging afternoon.

The Impact of Future Avalon Summit

The Committee for Wyndham was recently featured in the StarWeekly highlighting the importance of better connecting Wyndham and Geelong. This coverage reflects the ongoing impact of our Future Avalon Summit, held in May, where we partnered with Melbourne Avalon Airport, CEO Ari Suss to explore Avalon’s role as a gateway to growth and opportunity for our region.

Seeing these discussions flow into the public sphere through recent media reinforces the value of the Summit. It demonstrates how our advocacy is shaping conversations around infrastructure, business growth, and regional prosperity.

The Summit brought together business leaders, government representatives, and community stakeholders to discuss Avalon’s potential in driving connectivity, trade, tourism, and investment. One of the key outcomes was a clear recognition of Avalon Airport as a vital link between Wyndham, Geelong, and the broader state economy.

At the Committee for Wyndham, we are proud to play a role in ensuring that the voices of our members and community are heard. This article is a reminder of the influence we can have when we come together as a business community. We look forward to continuing this important advocacy and driving outcomes that benefit Wyndham, our members, and the broader region.

John Lister MP

State Member for Werribee

We’re pleased to share an update on behalf of John Lister MP, State Member for Werribee.

It’s been another busy month, both in Parliament and here in Werribee.

In local news, it was great to have the Premier join me in Manor Lakes in August. We met Raj, who opened Food Ease 14 years ago – an Indian grocer in Manor Lakes Central where many local residents shop. Of course, we also stopped at Jolly Miller Café, where the Premier and I chatted with my work experience students, Vedhika and Tyler, about all things local and beyond.

I also want to thank the Committee for Wyndham for joining me in Parliament on the 28th August. I hope those who joined us enjoyed the tour and cuppa, and the Premier’s guest appearance! I look forward to the Committee’s Annual State Budget Briefing with Treasurer Symes next week.

Mathew Hilakari MP

State Member for Point Cook

We’re pleased to share an update on behalf of Mathew Hilakari MP, State Member for Point Cook.

Welcome to this month’s community update. From cost-of-living support to infrastructure improvements and school upgrades, there’s plenty happening across Point Cook.

Many households are feeling the pinch, and I’m pleased to share that eligible concession card holders can now apply for the $100 Power Saving Bonus. This one-off payment is designed to provide some financial relief, and I encourage everyone to also visit the Victorian Energy Compare website—where you can explore energy plans and potentially save even more on your bills.

On the policy front, the Victorian Government is currently seeking community input on proposed “right to work from home” laws. This is a valuable opportunity to share your experience and help shape legislation that reflects the realities of modern working life. I encourage you to take part in the online consultation and make your voice heard.

Locally, road upgrade works are set to begin along Central Avenue, between Ascot Street and Fitzpatrick Drive, from August 25 to September 30. These works are part of much-needed improvements to Point Cook Road and surrounding infrastructure. During this time, please be aware of reduced speed limits, potential lane closures—including on the Princes Freeway ramps—and delays of up to five minutes. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our roads.

Our schools continue to grow with our community. At Saltwater P-9 College, exciting expansion works are underway, including new classrooms, a multipurpose hall, and dedicated learning spaces to accommodate 400 additional students. At Alamanda K-9 College, the newly opened Artisans House offers students modern, hands-on learning environments for art, digital media, food technology, and science—helping prepare young minds for the future.

Dylan Wight MP

Labor Member of Tarneit

Your vibe. Your voice. Your Youth Fest. Whether you’re into music, art, sport or culture, there’s something for you.

Trung Luu MP

Member for Western Metropolitan Region

We’re pleased to share an update on behalf of Trung Luu Western Metropolitan Region.

August was a very busy month around the community – particularly with regards to community concerns on the rising rates of crime in Melbourne’s west.

I was pleased to welcome the Shadow Minister for Police and Corrections, David Southwick MP to both Point Cook and Werribee, to hold a Community Safety and Crime Forum and for taking the time to listen to our community.

This was a chance for residents to come together and have their say on their lived experience and provide alternatives. Key issues raised were around the under-staffing and underfunding of our local Police, the rising rates of Youth crime, and how to manage repeat offenders.

I welcome the positive solutions put forward by those who attended and will take this feedback with me to Parliament.

I want to acknowledge both Cr Larry Zhao, Williams Landing Ward Councillor, from the City of Wyndham as well as Prashant Tandon, for their efforts in helping organise and facilitate these well attended community forums.
