Welcome to the International Insights newsletter, a monthly roundup of news, opportunities and updates with an international focus, curated by Western International for the Western community.

International Student Orientation Fall 2023

Western International will welcome more than 1,000 new international students at this fall's  International Student Orientation, taking place August 30-September 2.

Students will take part in four days of programming to help them get settled and start their Western experience off on the best possible path. 

In addition to social events, activities and information sessions, Western International will host two Welcome Ceremonies on August 31, offer shopping shuttles to nearby shopping centres, provide campus tours and more.

Peer Guide Program offers support to new international students

All new international students are invited to apply for an International Peer Guide, an upper-year Western student (graduate and undergraduate) who will connect new students to the Western community, answer questions, and provide support to help them settle into life in Canada and at Western.

English Conversation Program open to the Western Community 

Any Western students, staff and faculty members interested in improving and enhancing their spoken English are invited to join the English Conversation Program. Sessions take place weekly and are facilitated by trained student volunteers in an informal and friendly atmosphere. Facilitators prepare conversation topics, activities, or games based on the interests of each participant.

Global Café Kick-Off September 7

Organized by Western International staff and student volunteers, Global Café is a weekly opportunity for all students - international and Canadian - to make connections with people from around the world, to socialize and to take part in a variety of multi-cultural- themed activities.

All students are welcome to drop by the International and Graduate Affairs Building Atrium on Thursdays between 3 and 5 pm!

Tea & Information Sessions for Spouses returns this fall

Do you know of an international student whose partner might benefit from meeting others who are new to Canada?

Spouses and partners of international students are invited to join weekly Tea and Information Sessions, where they can connect with each other, practice their English and learn about Canadian culture.

New International Learning programs take flight

As our International Learning team gets ready for the busy fall promotion period, we're excited to announce two new opportunities for students. 

The new
Global Connect program offers sustainability, biodiversity, global health and indigenous themed study tours taking place in Costa Rica. Fifteen Western students took part in the first study tour August 19-26. Students can apply for future study tours in Winter Reading Week and Summer. 

An expanded number of Virtual International Internships are also available - bringing students the chance to gain global skills from the comfort of home. Students can be placed with organizations from around the world and gain work experience, intercultural skills and more.

Words 'Did you know"

Did you know? 

International Student Advisors host sessions throughout the year on a wide range of topics related to immigration, arrivals, banking and more. Students are also invited to make an appointment, stop by during office drop-in hours or attend virual FAQ Friday sessions.
