Welcome to the July edition of Vitality! We're excited to share that the annual MSWA Client and Community Forum returns on 3 September. Join us as we share an overview of the year ahead, developments in neurological research and innovative technology to support clinical
care. Additionally, STOP-MS and FIRMS-EBV clinical trials have commenced recruitment for trial candidates. This significant study will test whether antiviral medications against EBV can help slow MS or reduce symptoms. Read more below. You may also be aware of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)'s release of the new NDIS Pricing Review. Alongside our fellow disability support providers across Australia, we are extremely disappointed in the NDIA's decision to reduce the pricing of vital therapy services, MSWA is advocating in many different ways to challenge this decision by the NDIA. Read more here. As always, there is plenty of opportunities to get involved in MSWA through our workshops and events! Stay warm, and happy reading!
MS Australia's response to the new
NDIS Pricing Review
MSWA shares the sentiment of MS Australia to express our extreme disappointment with the 2024-25 NDIS Pricing Review. The changes to NDIS pricing for therapy supports and travel will have a significant impact on the allied health services delivered by MSWA impacting our high-needs Clients, transport and distance. MS Australia is calling for the NDIA to reconsider the impacts of these new pricing arrangements; introduce a tiered pricing system for therapy
supports; establish clear independent pricing; and a flexible, participant-focused and sustainable pricing model for the NDIS.
New treatment for relapsing remitting MS recommended for PBS listing
In May 2025, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) recommended adding ublituximab (Briumvi®) to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for treating adults with relapsing remitting MS. Ublituximab takes less time to administer and needs less frequent dosing than some other similar treatments, while being just as effective. The process now moves to the Federal Government for final approval for inclusion on the PBS. This would make ublituximab more affordable and accessible for people with relapsing remitting MS.
AI supporting neuro conditions research
AI is amplifying the trajectory of research by enabling researchers to analyse data with increased efficiency. Machine learning makes quantifying relationships between different variables, far easier. This is leading to deeper understandings, earlier diagnosis, better management strategies and the potential development of new cures for neurological conditions.
Reshaping disease treatment
The Personalised Medicine Centre promises to reshape the way diseases are treated based on a person's unique genetic makeup, lifestyle and needs. The project aims to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical applications to improve patient's outcomes. The collaborative research project is led by Murdoch University and Perron Institute.
Final patient dosed in Phase 2 stroke trial
Dosing of patients in Argenica Therapeutics’ Phase 2 clinical trial of the neuroprotective drug ARG-007 in acute ischaemic stroke has been completed. The drug could potentially extend the therapeutic time window for medical intervention. MSWA contributed to the pilot phase of the project in 2017.
NDIS Pricing Review: The price is NOT right!
The Raw Nerve Podcast latest episode addressed the 2024-25 NDIS Pricing Review. Together with other sectors, MS Australia opposes the price reductions, claiming that these decisions will put strain on its member organisations and will significantly impact the Australians living with neurological conditions and their wider community.
MS and EBV: Clinical Trials
Two new trials—STOP-MS and FIRMS-EBV—will test whether existing antiviral medications against EBV can help slow MS or reduce symptoms like fatigue. Australians can register their interest and check eligibility now through MS Trial Screen.
Eating patterns for MS
This cross-sectional online study by the University of Wollongong, aims to discover the enablers or facilitators following an eating pattern for someone with MS, and the barriers that prevent adherence to a dietary pattern.
STRONG-MS
This study examines the effectiveness, acceptability and feasibility of ONERO: a supervised, High-Intensity Resistance and Impact Training (HiRIT) program that may improve bone health and muscle strength in people with MS.
Australia MS Longitudinal Study
The AMSLS collects real life data from people living with MS. It is a survey-based research study that has been running since 2001. The data collected is used by policy makers and MS medical and support services to criteria a positive change and improve the lives of people with MS. The AMLS is always accepting new participants.
PLATYPUS
PLATYPUS adaptive clinical trial will seek to reverse neurological damage caused by progressive multiple sclerosis. The first of its kind in Australia, the flexible nature of the multi-arm, multi-stage adaptive design will allow researchers to investigate the potential benefits of several existing medications simultaneously.
