[Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu]
There are vast crowds of very hungry people right before our eyes.
There are those who hunger for intimacy and think their hunger will be satisfied with pornographic images or pornographic relationships. But in the end, they are even more hungry for that real human love that often takes so much time and energy to cultivate.
There are those who are hungry for healing as they face a debilitating disease; or whose grief over the death of a loved one is so heavy that it feels like a real handicap in their lives.
There are many who hunger for justice. Some are fleeing war or oppression in their homelands; others are homeless and struggling to live a dignified life; yet others are are looked down upon because of their customs, their different language, and their different ways of seeing the world. There are those who hunger for justice for little babies in the womb in a world that has made them so disposible or even despised. Read more...

By Anna Weaver
Hawaii Catholic Herald
After a few years hiatus due to COVID-19, the Hawaii branch of the Order of Malta resumed its pilgrimage groups to Lourdes, France, in fall 2021 and spring 2022.
Lourdes, the site of a famous Marian apparition, is known for its spring where those who are ill can bathe and wash in the waters that have reported healing powers.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Waikane, parishioners Diane and Colin Lau were two Hawaii travelers with the Hawaii Order of Malta to Lourdes from April 26 to May 5.
Diane, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018, went as a “malade” and Colin as her caregiver. Colin’s cousin, Darryl Wong, is one of the local Knights of Malta who organized the annual Lourdes pilgrimages. Read more...

Mentoring New Leaders for Social Ministry, Part Five
|
 |
|
From the Office for Social Ministry
According to the Second Vatican Council, “It is upon the Church that ‘there rests, by divine mandate, the duty of going out into the whole world and preaching the gospel to every creature.’” God’s commandment to Christians, therefore, is to reach out and share what we have received – to evangelize the good news of Christ and give witness to the gospel.
Session Four of GREAT CATHOLIC PARISHES is entitled: Great Parishes Evangelize. When interviewed, many responses by pastors admitted this to be an area of weakness for lack of a strategic plan, dedicated staff member or a working committee.
William E. Simon describes our parishes to be filled with either Mirror People or Window People. To look into a mirror, you see only your reflection, yet looking into a window enables you to see others. Evangelizers are Window People who see outside their parish community and seek to share their enthusiasm by inviting others to join in. Read more...

Saint of the Week
Saint Paulinus of Nola
c. 354–431
Memorial - June 22
Saint Paulinus was to the manor born. And it was a very nice manor. He was raised on an aristocratic estate near Bordeaux, France, in an elite Roman family replete with senators and other high officials of empire. Paulinus received a superior education from a well-known tutor and served, while still in his twenties, as Consul of Rome and Governor of Campania in Southern Italy. He was humble, sage, gentle, well read, and intellectually curious. Paulinus represented, in short, the very best of Rome. He would, in time, represent the very best of the Church. Read more...
