NIH Salary Cap Update
The NIH has released a new salary cap of $212,100, effective Jan. 1, 2023. To read the full NIH announcement, click HERE.
What does this mean for your salary cap applicable awards?
For any budget period that started prior to Jan. 1, 2023, the previous salary cap of $203,700 will be utilized for the remainder of the budget period. The new salary cap will be utilized at the start of the next budget period. For any budget period starting 1/1/2023 or later, the new salary cap will be utilized.
REMINDER: Reduced FTEs are proportionally capped. For example, an individual with $150,000 Emory base salary at a 0.50 FTE would be $300,000 at a full FTE. Therefore, that individual would be over the salary cap. The salary cap must be reduced proportionally to the FTE. $212,100*0.50 FTE = $106,050 applicable salary cap.
Please reach out to your assigned RAS administrator with any questions. The current assignment list and organizational chart can be found HERE. DOM RAS is requesting the following timelines for pre-award requests to the Pre-Award Inbox: - Proposals, progress reports, other support requests: at least two weeks prior to sponsor deadline. Requests made earlier than two weeks are always appreciated.
- Proposals with subrecipients and/or cost share: at least one month prior to due date.
- Finalized files: at least five business days prior to the sponsor deadline.
Would you like assistance reviewing your grant proposal? DOM researchers can request grant writing and editing services from Janet Gross, PhD, on projects including resubmissions, career development awards, and multicenter grants. These services are offered through a cost sharing effort between the department and the researcher’s division and must be approved by both.

Subhashis Pal
Post Doctoral Fellow - Endocrinology What is your professional background?
I am a post-doctoral researcher, currently working with gut-microbiome and osteoimmunology at Emory University. I received my PhD in Biology from Central Drug Research Institute - Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2019. In 2022, I received the "ASBMR President's Award" for my work in melanoma and bone metastasis. In what division do you work, and who is your mentor?
I work in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipids. Professor Roberto Pacifici, MD, is my postdoctoral research mentor. Briefly describe your research. Why is it important?
In our recent study, we found that gut microbiome plays a major role in regulating tumor progression by promoting the expansion of relevant immune cells, and that gut microbiome depletion due to prolonged use of antibiotics has negative clinical consequences. We also found that “bad” microbiome in our gut is responsible for causing inflammation and ultimately has a negative impact on our bone and overall health. Our studies showed that probiotics could play a major role to maintain a healthy gut microbiome, help fight against different pathological conditions, and contribute to better overall health. What do you like most about
Emory?
The work culture and environment of Emory University is great. I really like the way different cultural and sporting events are organized at the university. I am happy to be a part of this community. What is your favorite movie or TV show?
The "Mission Impossible" series and "Marvel" movies are my favorite. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love hiking and travel photography. At least once a year I go on a hiking trip, which is a “must do” for me. What is a fun fact about you?
I love to travel to different parts of the world, explore local foods, and make good friends.
"What's Up" is brought to you by Emory University's Department of Medicine Office of Research.
