Dear Members, I hope you are well and managing to enjoy the recent pockets of sunshine.
Business continues to be busy across the UK5G ecosystem and I’m pleased to see some first-rate reports coming out of the 5GTT projects that have been recently completed; it is through the sharing of these learnings and insights that we can help transition the UK from innovation to early market adoption.
If you haven’t seen them yet, the team has been sharing recordings from the various sessions at the recent Showcase event. Whether you weren’t able to join us in Birmingham, or you were there but want to catch up on a session you missed in person, these are a great resource and opportunity to hear from a wide range of experts from across the UK, and in some cases, further afield. Not sure where to start? I’d recommend this session on lessons learned across the programme that I had the pleasure of hosting and was full of actionable insights.
Yours sincerely,
Ros Singleton, Chair, UK5G Advisory Board
Showcasing the people working behind 5G“Net AI was formed in 2020 as a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh, building on years of research at the intersection of mobile networking and deep learning, conducted at one of Europe's leading computer science research centres. Its success, I believe, is a testament to my team’s unique expertise in networking, traffic characterisation, machine learning, security, business development and strategic planning.”
How 5G can help increase our connection to nature and inspire us to protect it
Winning a place in the 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme has given Eden Universe Project the opportunity to explore the role that technology can play in tackling climate change. It has allowed the team to look at how 5G can help to develop a series of augmented and virtual experiences that not only enhance the onsite visitors' experience but also help to deliver the message to much wider audiences as a result of that technology enhancement.
Throughout the project, Eden Universe Project has worked with partners Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), an experiential art collective that specialises in Augmented Reality (AR), to explore the world beyond our senses. Together, they created the vision of using AR to reveal hidden worlds in nature that could influence visitors’ thoughts, feelings and actions towards biodiversity and the climate. Thus the ‘Invisible Rainforest’ AR experience was born and where better to do that, than the backdrop of Eden’s iconic Rainforest Biome.
Every fortnight, we reach out to the UK5G ecosystem to answer your questions
Question of the fortnight: What role can 5G play in the construction industry? The construction industry is increasingly reliant on fast, reliable digital connectivity as it adopts more digital ways of working.
Additionally, the construction industry is identifying and adopting technology solutions from other sectors that offer benefits applicable to the construction industry whether they are in terms of safety, carbon saving and productivity improvements. Therefore, the available ways in which this connectivity is provided must evolve if the full efficiencies promised are to be realised.
The development of 5G, and in particular private 5G networks, can act as the enabler of this growth in digital working and therefore investment both financially and R&D effort is essential if it is to be a reliable part of the supporting infrastructure that is used to deliver construction projects. Finally, three articles not to miss on UK5G ...This session overviews the security threat landscape for 5G solutions, consolidates knowledge gathered through the 5G T&T Programme that could be used to counter these threats and provides calls to action to ensure 5G systems are developed, tested and maintained securely.
