Click here Message from our CEOThe Productivity Commission has released a position paper – A case for an extended unpaid carer leave entitlement. The paper looks at the social and economic impacts of extending unpaid leave so that working carers can care for their loved ones. However, the Commission found that few employees would use an unpaid leave entitlement, and what most working carers of older people wanted, was greater access to flexible working arrangements. Changes to the management of No Interest LoansCarers Queensland has facilitated the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) application process and management for more than ten years. As of Friday, 31 March 2023, while Carers Queensland will continue to facilitate the loan application process, Good Shepherd will take over the management of the loans. All carers who have an outstanding NILs loan will receive a letter in the mail to explain the changes to the management of NILS and the documents to support them through this transition. Mathew advocates for inclusion in the great outdoorsMathew Townsend is bringing his professional experiences with his outdoor adventure company to advocate for inclusion for people with disability. Mathew is advocating for inclusion for people with disability as part of Carers Queensland’s Inclusive Sport and Recreation Communities project. The Brisbane local, founder and CEO of Nature Freedom is one of eight members of the recently formed Beyond the Sidelines Reference Group, established to work on increasing the representation and participation of people with disability in sport and recreation, both on and off the playing field. Carers also bearing the cost of housing and community maltreatment of people with disability The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability has released its most recent research on the Economic Cost of Violence, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability. This research estimates that maltreatment of people with disability due to lack of inclusive homes and communities costs $4.7 billion per year. It also highlights that the financial impact of this maltreatment is adversely affecting carers. In this 2023-24 Federal Pre-Budget submission, Carers Australia is calling on the Albanese Government to confirm the pre-election commitment to develop a National Carer Strategy within its first term. While the Carer Recognition Act 2010 (Commonwealth) formally acknowledges the valuable social and economic contribution of carers in Australia, the last National Carers Strategy lapsed in 2014.
