Click here Karinya News - October 2023Dear Friends of KarinyaOccasional bursts of chill amidst the beautiful Spring Days continue ... does anyone else think the August winds have come in October? A most significant event occurred at Karinya House on Tuesday, 24 October 2023. We were thankful to welcome Selina Walker, local emerging elder, accompanied by her Aunty Annette Shea, to Karinya House for Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. This was a very special time, both from a physical and from a healing perspective, attended by current residents, their babies and children, Karinya volunteers, Committee and staff. Selina spent time welcoming us, taking the smoke through all buildings including residences, and sharing learnings with us all about the smoking and how we can take learnings with us in our individual lives also. Thank you, Selina and Aunty Annette, for being with us and for the gift of Welcome and Cleansing. Karinya Impact 2022-23The Karinya House 2022-23 Annual Report has been a work in progress over the July to September period and is currently with our design service, Paper Monkey, and particularly Liam Camilleri. Design of the Annual Report for both electronic and print publication is provided at no cost. This is a pro-bono gift valued commercially in excess of $6,000. The report is extensive, however, you may like to know that during 2022-23:
The next eNewsletter will provide a link to the Annual Report on our website. If you are interested in receiving a print copy, please do let us know. We only do a very small print run now - primarily for display at events or meetings with community groups and organisations who seek to learn more about the Karinya service. A note for our Financial DonorsAn important message to our vital and greatly valued financial donors. Thank you for your continued financial support for Karinya House. Each year, we need to raise $700,000 per annum in donor and partner funding, supporting 30% of operating revenue, to sustain current service levels. Together, all our existing financial donors and partners combine to secure 50% of this total non-government funding. For this we thank each of you for your contribution. We assure you that it is never our intention to ask you to make additional donations. For the remaining 50% of our budget target - around $350,000 per annum - we do rely on one off donations and other unexpected fundraising contributions, which occur at random, or in support of our quarterly appeals. Please be assured - when we do therefore promote other appeals during the year - we do not expect additional donations from our existing financial supporters. We try to cover this in all our newsletters and other digital communications, by leading into an appeal with some wording to convey that NEW financial donors are being sought. Many donors and eNewsletter subscribers do prefer to support the quarterly appeals - which generally are:
For this reason, we will share information about our appeals through eNewsletters, along with the key information about the House and happenings at Karinya. You are most welcome to skip over appeal segments. The following segment is one you may wish to skip over. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support. We do appreciate you and your gift. Christmas - SponsorsAs part of the 2023 Christmas Appeal, we are again seeking "sponsors", offering members of our community the opportunity to practically support women we are walking alongside and provide gifts for their celebration of Christmas. If this is of interest, please contact us and we will provide more information to you. We will also have Karinya Christmas Cards available if this is of interest - please do contact us to let us know. The beautiful image featured here is artwork specifically created for our Christmas greeting and gifted to us by the wonderful Stephanie Corkhill-Hyles. The brief was something to describe the support we provide for women, during and after pregnancy. Karinya GraphicsThe image here is a graphic design developed from an actual photo taken recently. In the photo, looking out from the main casework hub, there was a string of women, returning to their residences, having spent the morning at the Karinya Group program. It was a fabulous photo, and our designer, Stella Evans, has captured a snippet here for us to use across our digital communications. We hope you like it as much as we do! Many of our current design images come from Stella and are provided at very generous pro bono rates. Stella lives within the Canberra Region describing herself as an emerging visual artist and graphic designer, rural NSW. You can see more of Stella's work at the Instagram link below. Snippets....The Karinya Village in Residence: After attending a group session on reading with babies and children, one of our residents shared with a support worker how proud she felt after reading two stories to her child before bedtime. ********************* A note received after assisting a woman to attend an specialist appointment in Sydney. "Thank you to Heather (volunteer) and Shavaun (support worker) who accompanied me on this trip and to dear Catherine and Sonya (caseworkers) who made the arrangements. On behalf of myself and my baby, I am really delighted to hear and see so much of your love and kindness." ********************* A woman stated - since being supported by Karinya, "I have my confidence back. I feel like the old me again. I feel happy. For all your support and care - the kids and I are very grateful." ********************* From a recent donor: "It was a privilege for me to hear Lavinia Tyrrel, your CEO, when she delivered a talk at our recent club meeting. The work that the staff and volunteers at Karinya House do to look after women in crisis is truly amazing. I admire and respect you all." #humansofkarinya We give thanks ....To everyone who supported the 2023 Gala Dinner, walked the Mercy Walk for Women, or donated during September as part of the Double your Impact Appeal. Across September, donations received amount to $45,454, which will all be matched by the Matched Giving Partners. All partners have confirmed they will donate their full pledged amount, so the combined total raised is $104,514. The Gala Dinner, as well as being a fabulous celebration for 360 guests, raised $24,537 (net proceeds).
