Carlton Cornwall Bowls
23-24 April 2022
Carlton Cornwall’s annual Mac Elliot Classic is the club’s marquee tournament. Held each year on the weekend closest to ANZAC day, it is also included in Bowls New Zealand’s Summer of Bowls calendar. Mac Elliot was 22 years old when he joined Carlton Bowling Club in 1937. When war was declared in 1939, he joined the Royal Navy New Zealand Division and was assigned to the light cruiser Achilles based in Devonport. In October, the ship departed New Zealand to join the Royal Navy flotilla with the mission to seek and destroy the German battleship Admiral Graf
Spee. Achilles was one of four warships that saw active service at the battle of the River Plate on 13 December. Tragically Mac Elliot and two other sailors aboard Achilles were killed in action. They are recorded as the first New Zealand casualties of WWII. They are buried in the British cemetery in Montevideo. Upon hearing the news, the club approached Mac’s mother and sought her sanction to establish a memorial in his honour. Mrs Elliot agreed however, she stipulated that the trophy must remain at the Carlton Bowling Club. The first tournament was held on 1 June 1940.
The 2022 Mac Elliot Classic was held on 23 & 24 April. The entries were limited to a field of 16 teams. The weather goddess blessed the club on Saturday and kept things interesting with a few heavenly sprinkles on Sunday. We had a good smattering of talent among the teams, which promised some interesting matchups. Day 1 consisted of Fours, Pairs A, Pairs B and Fours. At the end of the day, there were six teams within three points of each other. Day 2 consisted of Fours, Triples, Singles and Fours. The draw pitted some of the top six teams against each other - so there was constant pressure on teams to retain their position on the ladder. The final game saw the leading Carlton Cornwall team against the third-placed team, Bridge Park. The potential outcome had some interesting permutations, given that there were other teams in the mix. The final results were:
Winners - Carlton Cornwall, undefeated in all eight matches scoring a maximum of 24 points: David Ball (skip), Grant Keats (3), Ted Walker (2), Barry Green (lead). Runners up - Pt Chevalier, scored 24 points with seven wins: Aidan Takarua (skip), Colin Williams (3), Gareth White (2), John Petello (lead).

Te Atatu Peninsula Bowling Club
23-24 April 2022
Our first Founders Tournament was played in the 1979-1980 season as a Fours event. The winning team for that season was N Unkovich, R Haresnape, J Sunde and K Lee, representing Okahu Bay. In the 1987-1988 season, the tournament changed from Fours to the current Triples format. The first Triples team to win this trophy from Henderson were G Lawrence, L Bilcich and T Garelja. Over the years, many talented players have etched their names on the Founders Trophy. This year was the 42nd tournament and once again, Te Atatu welcomed skillful players last Saturday and
Sunday. In fact, G Lawrence and T Garelja, winners in 1987 played and managed to finish in the top six, with B Fulton. It was a fantastic two days - we managed to dodge the rain and played on superb greens. The kai was delish, so it is a big thanks to our volunteers in the kitchen. We are grateful, as always, to our main sponsors; West Auckland Trust Services (WATS) and Douglas Pharmaceuticals. To all the teams who supported the event on the weekend, we look forward to seeing you next year, when we will be playing on two greens. The players who will have their names etched on the Founders Trophy in 2022, with 7 out of 7:
Winners - Mae Taurua, Peni Panapa and Pale Luka, pictured with Marion Hakaraia and Peter Blucher.
Bottom picture - Gary Lawrence and Tony Garelja with Billy Fulton.

St Heliers Bowling Club
23-24 April 2022
What can we say - another great day of bowls was played over the weekend, as witnessed in this photo of a very happy Men's Champion Fours team: Paul Renwick, Allan Spence, Steve Hodder and Dean Edge.
If you have been down to St Heliers Bowling Club recently you will have noticed the new shelters that have been installed on the seaside of B green. The replacement of the old sun shades has been in the pipeline for a considerable amount of time, these new shelters were installed this year as a result of a generous contribution towards the cost from two of our members Allan and Sue Smith (pictured). Green B has been getting plenty of Club to play before the grass B green closes for the season at the end of the month.
