FEAM Forum Annual Lecture 2024

The FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum Annual Lecture 2024 will take place on 22 November in Amsterdam. Building on last year’s success, it will again be part of the European Hospital & Healthcare Convention (CONVEHO), which brings together hospital leaders, managers, medical directors, and heads of clinical departments from across Europe.

This year, the lecture will focus on inequity in medicine, starting with a general introduction to the topic before exploring more specific issues, such as inequity in cancer care.

We’re also pleased to announce that Novartis, a FEAM Forum partner, will sponsor our participation in CONVEHO this year.

Recommendations for the next EU R&I Framework Programme

A recently published joint report by FEAM with the UK Academy of Medical Sciences on the next European Union R&I Framework Programme calls for sustainable budgeting, reduced red-tape and more funding opportunities across clinical research, research infrastructure and broader participation from more countries..

The report was drafted following a joint workshop held in February this year, which brought together representatives from 18 Academies within FEAM's network. It focused on the design of the upcoming EU Framework Programme 10 (FP10), due to be launched in 2027.

EASAC/FEAM joint project on AI in Healthcare

FEAM and the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) are working together on a project to evaluate how AI-enhanced health products and services can be integrated into healthcare. Key areas include evidence measurement, randomised clinical trials (RCTs), and health systems research, with use cases demonstrating the added value of AI.

The project will also explore the need for new guidance or regulations, address barriers such as data federation and interoperability across healthcare systems, and highlight ethical considerations like data protection, privacy, transparency, public trust, and equitable access to healthcare.

FEAM Forum Internal meeting

The FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum held its internal meeting on 6 August 2024, focusing on the critical intersection of climate change and health. Key presentations covered the impact on animal and human health, the environmental consequences of pharmaceutical waste, and the increasing risks of infectious diseases exacerbated by climate change. During the meeting, the importance of a One Health approach and stronger collaboration across sectors was emphasised.

To continue these discussions, we will hold follow-up meetings in smaller groups, allowing for more in-depth engagement and collaboration on these pressing issues.

The FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum is a platform for dialogue on key biomedical policy issues, bringing together representatives from academia, industry, public health bodies, regulators, and patient groups.
