Apps, Apps, and More Apps

Pitt App Center

Students have access to tons of free software and mobile apps that would otherwise cost tons of money. If you don't feel like installing it on your device, just pop over to the Student Computing Labs or log onto the Virtual Student Computing Lab to use them.

  • Get Microsoft 365 online or install the desktop apps, plus 5 TB cloud storage.
  • Activate an Adobe Creative Cloud license for free.
  • Download all the software that may be necessary for classes you’re taking at the Software Download Center.

You can use your phone for all sorts of things, from academics and campus events to health and dining. The Pitt Mobile App Center serves as your one-stop shop for University-related apps. There are tons of good ones, but we recommend starting with these seven:

  • Pitt Mobile — your gateway to all things Pitt
  • Duo — for multifactor authentication when logging in
  • Canvas Student — access your classes, assignments, and grades
  • Pitt CX Mobile —  build your schedule and add/drop classes
  • Microsoft apps — especially Outlook email and OneDrive storage
  • Pharos Print — for touchless printing at any Pitt Print station
  • Rave Guardian — for staying safe and getting help

Get IT Help Before Classes Get Going

Need some help setting up your laptop before classes really get intense? Hands-on support is available at Drop-In Support at the University Store on Fifth and G-62 Cathedral of Learning! Don’t be shy, come say hi! You can also contact the 24/7 IT Help Desk for fast, friendly support how and when you want it.

Duo Multifactor Authentication

Deny Random Duo Prompts

Only approve Duo requests that you initiate when actively logging in and forward suspicious email message as an attachment to phish@pitt.edu. Duo multifactor authentication is designed to prevent unauthorized access to your information and University data, but it requires constant vigilance. Never tap “Approve” if you receive a Duo request that you were not expecting.

Using myPitt

Tech Ambassadors

Meet the Tech Ambassadors

Not sure what tech services you get or how to start using them? The Tech Ambassadors are here for you! They are students like you who happen to like tech. Follow them on Instagram @ UPittIT, leave them a message on their Teams site, or ask them to do a presentation for you and your friends, your res hall floor, your club, or your sorority/fraternity.

New Students: Complete Your Security Training

Universities are a top target for hackers because they hold a ton of valuable data — everything from social security and credit card numbers to medical records and research data. That’s why Pitt now requires security awareness training for incoming undergraduate students. If you’re a first-year student and haven’t already done so, take 15 minutes now to help protect yourself and the University from increasing cyberthreats.

2 Networks, 1 Pitt: Unleash Campus Wi-Fi

When it comes to connectivity, Pitt offers not one, but two powerful Wi-Fi networks. Take advantage of both networks to unlock the full potential of Pitt connectivity.

  • MyResNet: A Preset Connection for Your Residence Hall Room
MyResNet is the default Wi-Fi network for all Pittsburgh campus residence halls. The quick setup process requires you to register all your devices by providing its MAC address. Once your devices are registered, you are done — they will automatically connect when you're in your residence hall, giving you a reliable and secure high-speed connection.
  • PittNet: Connect When You're on the Move
PittNet operates in all academic and administrative buildings, including lecture halls, Hillman Library, student centers, etc, as well as on campus shuttles and many outdoor areas. PittNet doesn't require any pre-registration. Instead, just select the Wireless-PittNet network and enter your Pitt username and password!

Chat Pitt-Style

Pitt IT knows people use lots of apps to chat with friends, group members, instructors, and colleagues: WhatsApp, iChat, Google Chat, GroupMe. Now that you're at Pitt, the easiest way to do it is with Teams. You can chat one-on-one or start a group chat just by typing in someone's name; no email address or phone number needed. You can share your screen or start a video call. Since Teams chats are persistent, you you can go back and search them or pin them. But it only works if everyone checks Teams, so you and your friends should download the Teams mobile app, and start IMing away.
