Royal Oak wins double 1-5 Triples titles

Sunday was one of the greatest days for Royal Oak Bowls and for the Fisher family. Within two hours the Club had won not one but two titles - Steve Fisher was Skip of  Royal Oak's Men's 1-5 Year Triples team while his step-daughter Nicole Singer was Skip of the Women's Triples team led by Steve's partner and Nicole's mum, Lee Singer. With Des and Robyn Fisher cooking up a storm in the kitchen, the day was a real family affair.

Both Finals were thrilling. Nicole's team; Lee (L), Adele Nelson (2), and Nicole (S) found themselves quickly 2-6 behind against Auckland Bowling Club's Gloria Teinaki, Lisa Appleyard and Amy Doland. but eventually stamped their authority on the game and only dropped one further point in the final nine ends to win, 20-11.

The Men's Final was equally thrilling. Pt Chevalier Pirates were leading for most of the game before the Rockets, Carl Martin (L), Peadar MacElvanna (2), Steve Fisher (S) got their noses in front only for the Pirates' Jean-Claude Fuller, Stephen Campbell and Damian Beullens, to storm back in the last two ends to tie 16-16 and force an extra end.

The Pt Chev Skip's first bowl pushed the jack into the ditch close to their back bowl. Steve had one bowl left to beat that which he did with a nerveless backhand draw that finished just at the back of the green near the ditched jack to be holding shot. Their Skip tried to respond but sent his bowl into the ditch. Royal Oak had won to lots of whooping and hollering!

Many thanks to the volunteers who helped support Des and Robyn in the kitchen to make the weekend a fantastic success.

Open Days

There is nothing like a new season opening day that rallies the troops to roll up their sleeves and get things ship-shaped in preparation. As members know, the to-do list can be anything from refreshing the clubhouse, rejuvenating greens, polishing trophies, and setting the new programme – it is all part of the joy of belonging to a club.

Balmoral and Henderson had their open days last Saturday...

It's pennants season!

-- By Paul Neazor

With the 2023-2024 season starting to roll, competitive players to a man and woman will already have cast their eyes over the calendar. Unless you’re going to be involved in the two early Year 1-5 championships, the first eye-catcher is the Interclub Pennants.

Despite the fact we played this format last year, there still seems to be some confusion over how it works. So, class, sit up straight and pay attention. It’s actually not that hard. Each team, as we know, is made up of nine players in three Triples combinations, and they play two or three games each day. Each time they play the three teams from the same opposition club – so, the rounds are actually straight head-to-head.
