With a change in uniforms and a chill in the air, the winter terms are now upon us and we look forward to all that they have to offer. On Tuesday, we welcomed 21 students into the Pinehurst family, including a class of our youngest learners in new entrants. Wednesday morning saw our traditional pōwhiri and it was great to share the occasion with children and their parents. While it can be tough transitioning to school for young people, they have all made a great start and in the blink of an eye they will be the graduating class of 2037! Despite the holidays, we still had lots of people in action, with a particular highlight being a trip to Borneo for some of our College students. While there, they took part in a range of service and cultural activities and certainly grew from the experience. There were also lots of sports competitions and our students performed to an incredibly high level across hockey, badminton, diving, and climbing. We also welcomed new staff to start the term. Mrs. Carol James has joined us as the Primary Sports Coordinator, and Mrs. Nicola Everett joins us in Year 5. Covering maternity leave in the College, Mr. Joe Duffett will be teaching humanities, and we are delighted to welcome Mr. Graham Bean back to the English Department. I am confident that they will all have a positive impact on your children and truly contribute to the special community we have here. As part of our rich extra-curricular programme, we have had 18 students from IMAE school in Korea in classes this week. This is the second of our exchange trips with our own students scheduled to travel to Argentina and Korea later in the year. These trips are a great chance to develop friendships and be immersed in new cultures. Year 9 students departed for camp early on Monday morning and I enjoyed having a chance to see some of them in action on Wednesday afternoon. The group I saw had just come off the boats and they were all amazed to have seen pods of dolphins up close and despite the temperature, enjoyed an early morning swim. This camp is a natural progression of challenge that starts with our Primary School experiences and lead well into the Duke of Edinburgh Award for our College students. You may have seen in the news that the ‘away for the day’ legislation concerning cell phone use has come into effect this term. At Pinehurst, we have long upheld this policy as part of our regular school rules. Please remember that if you need to send an urgent message to your child, contact the main reception and we will ensure it is delivered. As we are now likely to see more rainy days, I expect that traffic around drop-off and pick-up times will occasionally be heavy. I ask for your patience during these times; wet weather reduces visibility and makes surfaces slippery, a dangerous combination. If we all work together, everyone will safely reach their destinations. Finally, you should be aware that we have an ERO inspection taking place next week. This inspection occurs every three years and is a governmental quality control measure to ensure that we are meeting the standards expected of education in New Zealand. I am confident that next week will present us with opportunities for growth and also reaffirm our school's outstanding features. I hope your children have a great term and that you all enjoy the weekend ahead. Best wishes, Mike Waller Dates for your DiaryMonday 6 May

Thursday 9 May No activities currently scheduled on this day Friday 10 May No activities currently scheduled on this day Message from the Principal of PrimaryKia ora, There were lots of stories about exciting adventures in the holidays, oh the places they have been! Everyone seemed rested though and ready to begin a new term. Our teachers continued their research into the Science of Reading on Teacher Only day as well as how to help students who struggle due to learning difficulties and may need some support. We have a strong programme of professional learning and rely on evidenced based research when choosing how to teach our programmes. The evidence on how the brain learns to read is very clear and all children learn to be successful readers when a structured literacy approach is taken. Watching very young children using phonics this week to decode often complex words still amazes me, it simply works, and our children make excellent progress. Sports teams are being trialled or have been selected and are ready for the season to start. Snowsports begins today at Snowplanet, for some it will be their first time on the snow and for others who are more experienced they will be whizzing down the slope at great speeds and having a fantastic time. We had great success at netball last weekend with our Year 4 team entering a tournament for the first time and winning it! We are looking forward to the future successes of our Year 4s that’s for sure. Our swimmers will compete next week in the North Shore swimming championships, they have been training hard, so we are eagerly awaiting their results. Cross Country is less than three weeks away and many will be in training we know; it gives our students the chance to develop their fitness and they will be getting ready in P.E. lessons too. Some children will work hard to finish in the top ten and others to finish the course, but everyone will be part of a team event and have fun on the day. The atmosphere is loud and buzzy, and we can enjoy the time together. Welcome to our new students and their families who have joined us in P4. Mrs Wilson tells me they have already learned three sounds and they are adapting very well to school life. She will be building relationships, helping them with their routines and social skills as well as encouraging friendships. One of the most rewarding parts of being a New Entrant teacher is seeing how quickly they progress and in a matter of weeks they will be settled and looking like they have been with us for a long time. We have a meet and greet session with parents on Monday too so that we can touch base and see how everything is going from their perspective. We have had a great first week, thanks for your support to have your children ready to learn. Ngā mihi nui, Sian Primary NewsPrimary Specialists Term 2Year 5 Physical Education with Mr Taylor Through the key sports of Badminton, Tennis, Volleyball and Kickball the Year 5’s will be introduced to key areas of skill development. They will become adept at recognising and showcasing the essential cues necessary for striking with precision, whilst demonstrating and developing the techniques of running, jumping and landing. Year 6 Music with Ms Pope Year 6 will be creating and deconstructing pop songs by listening, performing, and composing. Through group and whole class activities they will be developing skills of harmonising and using vocal and instrumental sounds to develop their awareness of melody and rhythm formation within pop song frameworks. This exploration will lead them to develop an understanding of song structure, drum patterns, chord progressions, catchy hooks, lyricism, and the art of crafting melodies. Year 4 Mandarin with Ms Venn In Chinese First Language the students will be learning about the Dragon Boat race and its significance within Chinese culture. Linguistically they will be honing their skills by distinguishing between blended initial pinyin sounds, acquiring the vocabulary to discuss topics such as friendships, family, and personal interests. They will be encouraged to refine their expressive abilities by incorporating descriptive language into their speech. Year 2 Spanish with Ms Cadag The Year 2’s are focussing on developing their fundamental language skills such as greetings and expressions of emotions whilst developing familiarity with the Spanish alphabet. They will be delving into the colourful tapestry of Spanish customs and Hispanic cultures, exploring the traditions observed during Easter in Spanish-speaking countries. New Entrant SyndicateIt has been a great start to Term 2 for the New Entrant Syndicate, with lots of smiles as the children get back into their learning and meet with their friends and teachers. This term, our newest students to Pinehurst have joined us in P4 with Mrs Wilson. They have had a very busy start to school and have been learning where everything is, as well as what our routines at school look like. It has been lots of fun, and the children have enjoyed trying out different things and getting to know the other students. In our Junior Year 1 classes, P1 have been working hard in maths and have started learning about measurement and the words we use to talk about height and length. They have learnt about comparing things using words like tall and short. P1 even had a go at ordering themselves from the shortest student to the tallest. P2 have started learning to use BeeBots in computing, these are very fun little robots that you can give instructions to for them to follow. They will continue this learning over the term as they begin to write short algorithms for the BeeBots to follow. There is lots of fun learning ahead for our New Entrant students! Year 1 and 2 SyndicateWelcome back to Term 2. I hope that you have all had an enjoyable holiday and have managed to spend some quality time with family and friends. It is lovely to be back on the school campus especially with the beautiful Autumn leaves falling around the playground! As you will have received the Overviews for Term 2 at the end of last term, I am sure that you will have seen that we have another exciting, busy and productive term of learning and experiences ahead. Below is a small snapshot of some of the learning that has been happening in our first couple of days back in the classroom. In Maths, P6 estimated how many pencils they can see within an image as part of an Nrich challenge to practice estimation skills. The children explored what methods they can use, such as skip counting to see what was the most useful strategy and why. P7 have been busy in all lessons this week starting exciting new units and adventures. In Art the children are focusing on Cityscapes and Landscapes, and after some learning about the artist Monet, they have started to create their own version of Monet’s garden using some of his techniques. In Maths our focus this week is using and applying the 10 times table facts to solve multiplication and division problems. The children created lots of ‘snakes’ on our carpet from dominoes by solving both number sentences and word problems. In P8 we have been learning to count on in 10’s, understand the multiplication facts for the 10-multiplication table and understanding division facts for the 10- multiplication table. Here the leaners are solving problems involving multiplication and division by playing a game of dominoes. We are delighted to welcome Stefan to Pinehurst! Stefan joined us this term, and we are thrilled to have him as part of our P22 family. On Wednesday, we attended the pōwhiri and held a welcome ceremony for him. We look forward to beginning our exciting learning journey together in P22. P23 began their new writing mission on Tuesday and were quickly busy researching facts about Antarctica to use to create a mind map. They had lots of existing knowledge to build upon. The children already knew lots of facts about the weather conditions and how to get around in the slippery conditions. Next, we will be helping an explorer by creating a list of items he should pack on his trip! As always, all classes will all be continuing to establish and maintain their positive, caring and respectful learning environments as places for students to tackle challenges in their learning, work together as a team and celebrate successes. Year 3 and 4 SyndicateWhat a wonderfully busy exciting start to Term 2 the year 3 and 4 classes have had. Year 3 P9 says: We have been learning about primary and secondary colours. We are learning to make predictions while reading by using our prior knowledge and clues in the text while we are reading. In Maths, we know am means day - from midnight to noon and pm means night – from noon to midnight. P10 says: In Mandarin we have been turning Chinese words int English and its about families. I’ve enjoyed Maths because we have been counting in 4s and multiples of 4s. Art was fun – we mixed paint and made secondary colours from primary colours. We made tertiary colours too! P11 says: We have begun to read a new novel this term called ‘The White Lion” and it is mix of fiction and nonfiction. We have been learning fun facts about white lions and we sketched them today using information we have read about them. In our class we now have a name wheel to help us to decide who does jobs, to take turns and to select learning buddies. Year 4 P12: In Health, we are learning what makes a good friend and what we need to do to be a good friend and to find a good friend. In Maths, we are learning how to tell the time accurately, read timetables, calculate time differences and we have begun our mission in writing about creating a story behind a board game! P13: In ICT we are beginning to learn how to create a code snippet . It is very interesting and we are learning lots of new skills that help us to share our thinking in the computer. In Reading we have begun a new novel called Varjak Paw by SF Said. We are really enjoying the beginning of it and are learning how to ask questions before we begin reading, during reading and after we have read. This helps us to deepen our understanding of the messages the author includes. P14: In Art we are learning all about cubism. Today we used some examples to help us to begin to create using paints. Our outlines are in black, and we are carefully using our brushes to fill in the shapes with a variety of colours. We are enjoying being individual and creative in how we put our colours and shapes together. Fantastic Fives and Super SixesWelcome back to our Year 5 and 6 families! We are absolutely thrilled to have welcomed all the students back for Term 2 2023 in the Year 5 and 6 Syndicate. I would also like to extend a welcome to new families who have joined us recently. We are very excited to welcome Mrs Nicola Everett to P15 as their new homeroom teacher. Mrs Everett, we are delighted to have you join our ever-growing Pinehurst community. There was a buzz of excitement around the Primary campus on Wednesday morning as the students arrived safely back to school after a well-deserved holiday. Don’t they look smart in their new winter uniforms?! Even though the mornings have become a little more crisp and the leaves have started to fall from the trees, Pinehurst is a beautiful place to be in Term 2 and I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by this everyday. I trust you have all enjoyed a restful and relaxing holiday and have managed to enjoy some cherished family time together. I hope you are also looking forward to getting back into the school routine for the upcoming term. In all our Year 5 and 6 classes, we have spent the last 4 days re-establishing our class systems and reconnecting with each other as one big class family! Our Pinehurst values continue to play an integral role in our classrooms this term and we are excited to continue learning and growing (in our own individual ways) alongside one another. Each student is striving towards their own personal best and we, the teachers, look forward to supporting them in doing so during the term ahead. From Book Week and Cross Country, to Grandparents Day and Camp we have a highly-anticipated term ahead to look forward to. Our doors are always open to you, our Pinehurst families, for any questions you may have. For now, please enjoy some photos from our first week back at school! We look ahead to the coming weeks with bright eyes and open arms! Many thanks, Keeva Shaw and the Year 5 and 6 Syndicate Year 4 Cookies & Cream Netball TeamThe North Harbour Pre-Season Netball Tournament held at the Barfoot and Thompson Netball Stadium on Sunday 28 April, was a thrilling display of skill and teamwork. Amidst perfect weather and packed spectator stands, the Pinehurst Year 4 Cookies & Cream team emerged victorious in their division after a closely contested round-robin phase. PōwhiriThe pōwhiri is a traditional Māori welcoming ceremony, a process where the host people welcome visitors, usually on a marae but in this context, to our school. The tangata whenua are the local people of this land (including our current students and staff of our school). Our Principal, staff and students officially welcomed our manuhiri (visitors, new whānau, students and new staff). They were called on with a traditional karanga (a chant that clears the way for a safe passage) only done by women. As the manuhiri moved towards the tangata whenua, the kapahaka performed a type of haka. This is an act of challenge. Mr Waller as tangata whenua spoke first, and as with every speech in the pōwhiri process, it was followed by a waiata tautoko (supporting song). A whai korero (speech) either welcomes or tells of the purpose of the visit and pōwhiri. We also welcomed our Korean visitors from IMAE Middle School who were staying with host families at Pinehurst. The Korean students sang a waiata from their culture to support their deputy principal who spoke on behalf of the manuhiri. The Manuhiri felt welcomed and are now part of the Pinehurst whanau by coming across and shaking hands. Netball North Harbour TournamentThe Primary Year 4,5 and 6 netball teams played at Netball North Harbour on Sunday in a pre-season tournament. This was a great opportunity to prepare themselves for the Winter season ahead. The teams had a series of games throughout the day against schools from around the Auckland area. Congratulations to the Year 4 team who played in their first ever tournament and placed 1st in their grade over Red Beach, demonstrating strength in both defense and attacking positions. The year 5 and 6 teams showed determination against a range of schools and both placed 3rd in their grade. From the first whistle to the final buzzer the Pinehurst teams demonstrated skill, talent, and fair play. Our parents were enthusiastic supporters on the side lines, and we would like to thank our coaches, Debbie Stanaway, Olivia Heaven, and Isabella Jones-Hill for their commitment. We are very excited to start our winter competition and look forward to some great results during the season. Message from the Principal of CollegeKia ora e te whānau o Pinehurst School Welcome to Term 2! If, like me, you stayed in New Zealand over the break, I hope you had the opportunity to take advantage of the lovely weather we experienced. It was great to greet students back to school on Tuesday, along with our exchange visitors from IMAE school in Korea, and we are now back in the busy school routine with lots to celebrate and look forward to. A reminder please that students should now be wearing full winter uniform including their blazer to and from school every day. The school break was a busy time for many of our students, including a fantastic trip to Borneo led by Ms Anderson and Mr Johansen. This trip created memories which will last a lifetime and you can read more about this group’s adventures later in the newsletter. Also during the break on Thursday, 25 April, Pinehurst College student leaders represented our school at two ANZAC memorial services to commemorate those Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world. Dylan McKay, Natalie Raphael, Christian Patterson and Katherine Geertshuis were exemplary ambassadors for our school, engaging with the community and demonstrating respect, thoughtfulness and care throughout the ceremonies. Christian shared a very moving poem entitled “The Inquisitive Mind of a Child” which he presented beautifully to lots of praise and appreciation from the audience. Whilst most students were enjoying the last day of their school break on Monday of this week, Year 9 were at school bright and early in preparation for their camp. The photographs and messages we have received so far suggest that they are having a magnificent time with some good sailing weather and beautiful sightings of local wildlife. Year 9 will be back at home on Friday, and I am sure they will be ready for a quiet weekend before starting back at school on Monday. Winter sports have already started, and it was wonderful to see some great netball at the Year 7 and 8 North Harbour Schools tournament last weekend; these teams should have a memorable season. Please encourage your children to stick with the sports teams to which they have committed and to remember our values in the sporting arena as we move through the season. Next week is Readers’ Week with lots of competitions, quizzes, dress-ups and fun. Until then, have a wonderful weekend. Ngā mihi nui Dawn College NewsCamp BorneoDuring the holiday break, a group of 8 students, accompanied by Ms. Anderson and Mr. Johansen, embarked on an inspiring journey to Borneo, Malaysia. A 10-day camp filled with meaningful activities aimed at contributing to the local community, exploring the natural wonders of the jungle, and commemorating a special ANZAC event. Upon landing in Kuala Lumpur after an 11-hour flight, we continued our journey with a 2-hour flight to Kota Kinabalu, where we were warmly welcomed by our knowledgeable guides, Fabien and Phil. During our bus ride to the local village, Fabien, our in-country guide, shared insightful information about the significance of Borneo and recounted the history of the Sandakan death march, highlighting the sacrifices made during World War 2. Our first campsite, Camp Bongkud, greeted us with a traditional dance and song performed by the locals, which we later reciprocated to the Chief of the village. Engaging in community project work, we contributed by creating gutters for better drainage near a bus stop and constructing stairs for easier access to Bongkud hill. We also had the opportunity to learn about the importance of rice farming and rubber tapping as well as the chance to interact with the children in the village, sharing games and practicing English with them. Additionally, we participated in painting cultural designs on wooden planks to be placed on the communal hall. We designed a board that displayed significant moments from our time at Camp Bongkud, leaving a lasting mark of our visit alongside posters from previous school visits. Our journey continued to Camp Batu Puteh, accessed by a boat ride down the Kinabatangan River. Immersed in the jungle environment, we assisted with reforestation efforts, clearing overgrowth and planting trees to preserve the natural habitat. During a river cruise, we encountered diverse wildlife, including crocodiles, macaques, proboscis monkeys and hornbills. A truly unforgettable moment of our journey was witnessing a herd of Pygmy elephants grazing along the riverbank, a rare and memorable experience. Despite having to relocate due to the presence of the elephants, we embraced the opportunity to explore the eco camp, engaging in seed collection and night walks to observe fascinating insects. Returning to the village, we potted the seeds that we collected earlier in the jungle and spent the night in a hostel surrounded by monkeys within the trees around us. The next day we visited the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. Witnessing these animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking and eye opening as we learnt the importance of these sanctuaries for the highly endangered species. We were lucky enough to be invited to attend a special ANZAC dinner where we paid tribute to the historical significance of the event and were noticed as representatives for New Zealand at this event. The next morning, we attended the ANZAC dawn service in the exact place the death marches ended which was a moving ceremony to acknowledge the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served in Borneo, hearing stories and tributes from the families of the 6 survivors of the death marches. After an eventful journey, we concluded our trip with a visit to Kota Kinabalu, indulging in modern comforts such as showers and air-conditioned rooms. Reflecting on our experiences, we explored the city, visited markets, and savored a well-deserved meal before saying farewell to our exceptional guides Fab and Phil and their team at Camps International. An experience that will have a long-lasting impact on all of us. Pinehurst Student Leaders Representing Pinehurst at ANZAC ServicesStudent leaders Dylan, Natalie, Christen, and Grace from our school showcased exceptional ambassadorship during two ANZAC Services on Thursday 25 April. Their interaction with the community and their demonstration of respect, consideration, and compassion throughout the events were truly commendable. Thank you to Lynn de Winnaar and Debbie Stanaway for taking the teams. Toi o te WikiOur toi o te wiki this week celebrates the students who have had their work selected to be exhibited in the frames in the Theatre for the duration of Term 2. The work exhibited is a selection of art that has been created during Term One. Congratulations to the following students for the creativity and perseverance they have demonstrated as they completed their mahi toi: Year 7: Laura, Ethan, Floria, Olivia, Sabine, Eva, Mateo and Ally. Year 10 Health and PEThe Year 10 IGCSE Physical Education students have been studying the respiratory system as part of the Anatomy and Physiology unit. Creating a 3D representation of the journey air takes as it enters and navigates our lungs has reinforced their knowledge of the structures and functions that enable us to breathe. Students are starting to investigate different adaptations that improve athletic performance how to produce these adaptations through training. Creative Writing ClubIf Only You Knew My Might - By Ryan Muganda Year 10 In Earth's embrace, I silently dwell, Science Students at Olympiad CampsOver the two-week break, four Pinehurst students had the opportunity to attend training and selection camps for New Zealand Science Olympiad teams. Bohan Jiang and Kelly Liu were both invited to the Biology Olympiad selection camp, While Kevin Gao and Bobby Zhang represented Pinehurst at the Chemistry Olympiad camp. While none of our students were lucky enough to earn a place on either of the international teams this year, all four thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For Kelly and Bohan, highlights included hands on dissection experiments for crabs and earthworms; while the opportunity to speak to specialists in a range of interesting fields has both students eager to continue their Biology studies. Bobby and Kevin also spoke of how hands on experience using chemicals not available (or legally allowed) in schools was particularly exciting. All four students recommended for others to follow in their footsteps and try out for Olympiad teams next year. Congratulations to all four for taking part. Pinehurst Orienteering Doing WellDuring the holidays, the North Island Secondary School orienteering competition took place between the 25 to 27 April. We had 4 Pinehurst Students who participated: Zachary Boss, Joel Jansen, Ben McQuinlan and Maya MaCullough. Over the three days there was an individual sprint, traditional individual sprint and a team relay competition. Zachary, Joel and Ben won the team relay competition in the small school category. This was a highly contested category. Maya, a beginner orienteering runner, was entered in the top grade and completed the course without missed punches. On the 9 May, we have 7 teams completing at the Auckland Secondary Schools competition at Ambury park. Later this term, on the 13 June, there are individual championships in Woodhill forest. If your children catch the bus home or has activities after school, they can go to the Dance Studio at 2.30pm. We have had many requests from parents to make their sibling photos less formal and more relaxed and fun, to bring the best out of their children. So, children may be asked to pose differently and against a different backdrop. Non-Pinehurst siblings are welcome to join too. If you would like to have a sibling photo taken, please complete the Sibling Photo Form. Xavier competed to a very high standard in his division and narrowly missed out on first place by only 10 seconds on a countback. Xavier placed 2nd overall in his division which is an extraordinary achievement. We look forward to watching Xavier throughout his competitions this year, especially at AIMS Games in September. Help Pinehurst Alumni Jemma perform in NYC!Hi there! My name is Jemma and I’m 22 years old. I’m so grateful to have been accepted to the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts’ summer intensive for musical theatre in July! I grew up as a singer/dancer/actor and have honed my teaching and choreographic skills through adulthood and teen years. I love performing on stage and it has been a lifelong dream to study and perform in New York. I work as a nanny when I’m not busy performing, and I’m incredibly passionate about sharing creative arts with children and young adults. I was two years into my degree in primary teaching but my father passed unexpectedly when I was 19, I honoured my grief by pursuing my creative passions and taking a break from my studies. Performing is my outlet and helped me process a lot of my emotions after my father’s death. I would love to return to teaching at some point in the future but for now, my joy lies in the arts. I would give anything for my dad to watch me perform one more time. I auditioned for this course very last minute so that I wouldn’t talk myself out of it; I never dreamed that I would be accepted, let alone receive a scholarship! As tuition and flights are still very expensive, I am holding this fundraising concert to help me reach the stars. Please join me for a night of song and dance by getting your tickets here. Thank you for helping me reach for the stars!!
