The Diocese of Honolulu’s traveling relics of St. Damien, right, and St. Marianne, left, were displayed June 15 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. They were joined by a fragment of a tree planted by St. Damien on topside Molokai. (Timothy Dias / Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception)
Catholics across the country get to view and venerate first-class relics of St. Damien and St. Marianne
By Celia K. Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald
St. Damien de Veuster and St. Marianne Cope have touched countless lives as their legacies of selfless ministry, compassion and faith in Kalaupapa, Molokai, have been shared across the globe.
A county jail, an abbey and the capital of the United States are among the most recent places where the saints have been celebrated and venerated, thanks to the efforts of an Arkansas man whose life was changed by St. Damien eight years ago.
Since May, Mark Jechura has brought relics of St. Damien and St. Marianne, as well as a piece of wood from a tree planted on topside Molokai by St. Damien, to sites across the mainland — from Arkansas to Washington, D.C. — on what he has named the Tree of Hope Tour. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry
“In this Jubilee Year of Hope, Christ, who is our hope, indeed calls all of us to come together, that we might be that true living example: the light of hope in the world today.” Pope Leo XIV video message, Chicago, June 14, 2025
Recently, thousands gathered at the Chicago White Sox stadium to celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV, a native of the city’s south side. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich led the sold-out Mass, which featured a virtual video message from Pope Leo XIV himself. Pope Leo XIV concluded his heartfelt message with this invitation: “I would like to invite all of you to take a moment, to open up your own hearts to God, to God’s love, to that peace which only the Lord can give us. To feel how deeply beautiful, how strong, how meaningful the love of God is in our lives. And to recognize that while we do nothing to earn God’s love, God in his own generosity continues to pour out his love upon us. And as he gives us his love, he only asks us to be generous and to share what he has given us with others.”
Chicago also recently celebrated Memorial Masses for the passing of two beloved persons who were shining examples of sharing God’s unconditional love. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Jul 26
|
 |
|
Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Memorial - July 9
The Syro-Persian Church of the East is believed to have first reached China around the year 630 when two monks arrived to engage in silk trade. Although they were Christians, they followed the Nestorian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. The Chinese emperor welcomed them and permitted them to share their faith. Over the next two centuries, some Christian churches were erected and converts were made. However, by the mid-ninth century, Christians were being persecuted. In the year 987, an Arab writer from Baghdad wrote of a conversation he had with a monk who had traveled to China. The monk explained, “Christianity is extinct in China; the native Christians have perished in one way or another; the church which they had has been destroyed and there is only one Christian left in the land.” Read more...
