Director's Message

This week is O’Week, and even though many activities are targeting undergraduate students, there are lots of events on all campuses that any student can attend. Have a look at the schedule here and meet your peers, join a club, or just enjoy some downtime.

There are also heaps of activities when The University of Adelaide kicks off its 150th celebrations with Kaurna Day - Tirkanthi - Ngutu - Taikurrinthi (Learning – Knowledge - Be united together) on the 27^th February; a day to immerse yourself and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture. Get up early and join the Sunrise Smoking Ceremony, witness information sessions and amazing musical

performances, celebrate students’ achievements, pet native animals or attend cultural workshops and play traditional games. Everyone is welcome!

HDR Social Networking

The AGRS are very happy to announce the first of our HDR Social Networking events for 2024. Please come and join us at one of our March events. These events are a fantastic opportunity for you to connect and engage with other HDR students not only from your school but also across your entire faculty.

ABLE HDR Conference_'Call for Abstracts’ Closes this Friday!

Abstracts are welcome from all currently enrolled higher degree by research students in the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics, University of Adelaide. (Postgrads who have completed by Wednesday 10 April cannot present a paper, but are welcome to attend the conference and the professional development sessions).

To submit an abstract, please complete the online application form in Career Hub by close of business on Friday 23 February 2024.

Celebrating Students' Success

Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Research Excellence - January 2024

We are delighted to announce the exceptional achievements of the 4 Doctoral students who have been honored with the Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Research Excellence for the month of January 2024. These individuals have demonstrated exemplary dedication, innovation, and scholarly excellence in their respective fields of study.

Industry PhD opportunity – Bush Heritage Australia

Bush Heritage Australia is inviting applications for a new industry PhD project at the University of Adelaide, titled: “Roos on the move: understanding kangaroo movement for improved conservation management”. This project will investigate the movement ecology of kangaroo populations, with the successful candidate having the opportunity to undertake fieldwork across Bush Heritage-managed reserves across South Australia. The candidate must be successful in receiving a University of Adelaide PhD scholarship in an upcoming round, and will receive an additional $10,000 supplementary scholarship. Students that have successfully completed an Honours or Masters degree in a related field are invited to apply.

Postgraduate Scholarship Opportunities

The Adelaide Graduate Research School maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process.

Consent and Respectful Relationships module

The University of Adelaide is committed to maintaining and strengthening a culture and environment that allows students and staff to thrive; an environment in which individuals feel respected, safe, valued, and welcome. Consent and Respectful Relationships is a mandatory module for all undergraduate and postgraduate students as part of this commitment. All new students will be automatically enrolled into this module as part of their admission to the University of Adelaide. Free Health Measure Stations Available for All Staff and Students

All staff and students can attend the free health measure machine at Hub Central North Terrace from 19 February to 19 March. The station will also be situated at the Waite and Roseworthy Hubs from 1 March to 1 April. No bookings required. The station measures blood pressure, heart rate, body fat percentage, height, body mass index, weight, smoking status, perceived stress and diabetes.

Read and Publish agreements

University of Adelaide researchers now have access to 19 Read & Publish Agreements, providing increased opportunities to publish research open access without paying individual article processing charges. HDR students publishing can make use of these too! New for 2024 are agreements with APA, ACM, John Benjamins and Taylor & Francis. Further details on agreements, eligibility, title inclusions and caps can be found on the Library webpages.

Free and confidential Disability Service

As a Postgraduate Student you are also eligible for assistance from the Disability Service if you have a disability or ongoing medical condition. Information about the nature of your disability is not disclosed – information obtained from you about the functional impact of the disability is shared with academic staff solely for the purpose of assisting you with your studies. Details relating to the Disability Service and the on line registration process can be found on the Disability website.
