Bishop's Homily for the Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

[Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Honolulu (Confirmation & First Communion)]

If you watch TV for a couple of hours, I bet you would see a particular commercial repeated several times during those two hours. Yes, companies do refresh their commercials from time to time, but for weeks or months, they will use the same one over and over again. I suppose they figure that if you are not sold on their product the first time, maybe you will be by the fifth. Their persistence must pay off, otherwise they would not pay to have the same ad repeated repeatedly!

So it is with prayer. God knows what we need before we ask him, but the very act of asking, sometimes over and over again, can deepen our own desire – and hopefully our gratitude once we receive the gift we are seeking. Of course, God can respond instantly to a prayer, but we must never have the notion that we just snap our fingers and God will jump. What he wants most of all is a relationship with us. Read more...

It must have been agony for the kids to have to wait for the adults to finish talking. But while the purple posts and bars and ladders and platforms of the shiny new playground at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani beckoned enticingly, the main man in the playground still had important things to say.

“We all know that play is very important for children,” Bishop Larry Silva told the dozens of people assembled outside the afternoon of July 5 for the blessing of Kiddy’s Playground, dedicated to the children of St. John Preschool by the late Kristin “Kiddy” Gudbjorg Jonsdottir DeCoster.

“That is how they develop,” the bishop continued. “That’s how they learn to get along with one another. That is where they learn to use their muscles and become more coordinated. And, of course, play is important for all of us.” Read more...

August Classes for Caregivers

From the Office for Social Ministry

We give thanks for all caregivers, especially family members who offer daily services to their loved ones who are sick, frail or aging. Yet many times they often forget to care for their own health and wellness. St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii acknowledges this important need and continues to offer resource information and personal wellness to sustain caregivers during the long haul.

Most classes are taught virtually through Zoom. Thanks to generous donors, most of the sessions are free of charge!

For a complete AUGUST schedule and links to register, go to Free! August 2022 Virtual Caregiver Education and Wellness Classes. Cheers to your health and safety this summer!

Please pray for the happy repose of the soul of Mrs. Rosa Maria Cintron de Burgos, mother of Deacon Ricardo Burgos, who passed away peacefully last week in hospice surrounded by her family. Mrs. Burgos was a catechist for over 30 years, and, in Ricardo's words, "she leaves behind a legacy of love in witnessing to Christ". May she rest in peace!

Saint of the Week

Saint James, Apostle
First Century
Feast - July 25

Some footprints of today’s saint, James the Greater, were preserved by Scripture. James was a member of the Twelve and of the Three; Peter, James, and John were the inner core that formed a shield of fidelity encircling Jesus Christ.
