The Biden-Harris administration announced this month in a press release that they would start to pay summer interns. Pause for shock: That’s right—until now, those internships were *unpaid*. Because prestige, right? Ron Lieber put it best in his New York Times article about unpaid internships. "I think we were supposed to stand up and cheer. But the correct response ought to be collective embarrassment that this gig has been unpaid for so long—and that so many more internships, both in Washington and across America, remain so." Sorry, not sorry, but if it took the White House until 2022 to implement paid internships, then it’s highly unlikely that they’re the last company to adopt a paid model. In a word, it’s ludicrous. Yes, internships are an important resume booster, but as Lieber wrote in his article: there might be some form of classism to the whole thing. Many students risk missing out on important career-building opportunities simply by asking to be paid for the work they do. A survey from the Center for Research on College Workforce Transitions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison identified two key reasons for someone not being able to start an internship: not being able to afford a pay cut, and having a current job. "Unpaid internships are distinctively American in so many respects. First, there's the baseline expectation of paying your dues," Lieber went on to write. Older workers (ahem, boomers) often talk about how it was, "way worse for them during their time," Maybe that’s understandable—but isn't that the point? If it was so bad “back in the day,” why is the workforce still stuck in the same place? There is some good news. On Handshake, a platform that connects campuses to companies, 75% of the internship listings are paid. It’s a start, but until that number reaches 100%, there’s work to be done.
